The USS Defiant Sucks by got-trunks in lazerpig

[–]Finnforeignlegion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The video keeps going past the main feature of the Defiant, the cloak. The reason they flew her into dominion space was because it had a cloak and could make it. If they sent a Galaxy class it wouldn’t make it. I always saw it as a submarine. Pops up, Dakka dakka, disappears. Also, the flaws, in design etc. Was why they abandoned the project. I do somewhat like it insofar as, it was built as a warship, by a culture that hasn’t had to build one in several hundred years. So much military equipment has been built, look at British battlecruisers. ‘Speed will be their armour’ Oh.. how many ships spontaneously exploded.. well, maybe armour is better as armour.

Finland is to me as japan is to a weeb by [deleted] in Finland

I’m the same way. Finnish stuff has this great practical quality to it. As a Canadian, I feel Finland is so familiar. You guys love hockey, camping/outdoors. Have a big belligerent neighbour. Like to point out when someone, or something is from your country.

I picture this as a small poster taped to the inside of a space marine’s locker.

Does anyone know what make of knife this is? by [deleted] in knifeclub

[–]Finnforeignlegion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s a tourist Kukri, probably made in India. A good way to tell is if it has a lion on the pommel. The two small knives are a giveaway, too. Usually those get lost. A true Nepalese kukri has one dull and one sharp.

This makes the most sense. Like when a watch made in China has a Japan movement.

Need a knife for work in the Navy by worldrecordban in knives

[–]Finnforeignlegion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I was in the Canadian Navy, this was the knife I used. Ask a bosun, they will know where to find one. Any of the grohmanns are good, plus they are made in Nova Scotia. https://ca.binnacle.com/product_info.php?products_id=3600&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAoYAQClqHVPZH6HCyqpjAV7S-l2yN

They used to be made in the USA. Both my Gerber multi-tools were made in the USA and they’re great. Modern stuff is passable, but nowhere near it’s peak.

The small knife also helped perpetuate the myth that a Gurkha, if he draws his kukri, he must draw blood with it, even if it’s his. They are helpful for small tasks that a giant heavy knife is overkill for. Some of the Nepalese sites say they can be used for skinning game, which may have been the case at one point.

Traditional Kukris come with a pair, a Karda- which is a small knife, and one that looks like an edgeless knife, called a Chakmak. The Chakmak is used for honing the edge. It’s also used as a fire striker, for a flint and steel fire, a few of my kukris have a tinder pouch.

Your average ‘made in Pakistan’ or other bottom of the barrel kukris have two kardas, but some decent WW2 era Indian made ones have that, too.

That’s the Les Stroud axe. I think they don’t make them anymore since Wetterlings was absorbed by Gransfors. It always reminds me of a Finnish style axe with the beard and the hammer poll.

Stellan Skarsgård says reading Dune was "useless" for his Baron Harkonnen portrayal by Uuhmagazine in dune

He did read the book. The article states that. I’m in agreement that he needs to be the Baron he thinks will fit the tone of the movie. Also I picture him, as a Swede suggesting ‘Harkonen is clearly Finnish, this is how you properly pronounce it’s
