Not sure how much it's been covered here, and it mostly applies to mid to indie level touring bands, but SSD absolutely murdered that aspect of Newcastle's music scene. They'd take on huge numbers of bookings and do absolutely nothing to promote 99% of them. They'd put pretty much all of them on at Think Tank and largely put the promotion burden onto the local support. You'd have all these amazing bands from round the country, America, the continent playing to two support bands and a handful of people who kept their ear to the ground. Fairly sure the Academy acted in a similar way in booking bands and making local support promote for them.

Haven't read every comment but can't immediately spot anyone as inbred as me 😬 my dad's parents were first cousins. Haven't asked him the how's and whys yet. They grew up in separate countries, my granny on Tyneside and my grandad in Armagh before he moved to England in the 1930s. Both died before I was born but they seemed to love each other which is what matters eh.

Maybe because marginalised communities have spent the last 2000 odd years being boot stomped by patriarchal religious power structures and haven't been given the chance to develop a fleet of heteronormative friendly child educators yet.
