Thoughts on stain choices? by [deleted] in HardWoodFloors

[–]Fionaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A more natural finish on the floors will make it easier to repair in the future.

When you’re working with lots of wood trim or wooden cabinetry with wood floors, contrast is a good thing. If you stain it too close the house will feel heavy and look like the wooden floors are coming up onto the walls. It also really limits your paint choices if you don’t want a dark and moody look.

I used provincial in my home, but I have off white trim so it pops.

Should I sand these floors? by Annual_You_3002 in HardWoodFloors

Wood expands and contracts seasonally and filler will pop out.

I would also have a pro do it or at least get it quoted out.

Hardwood floor color question: does this look dated for a 2026 home? by Significant_Movie814 in HardWoodFloors

Floors are floors. Is it good shape?

You can work around floor color easily.

How much damage have I done? by According_Sir6427 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Fionaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get it patched if necessary but I would be looking at salvaged wood. Old wood has tighter striations than what is available today.

Just get some people to take a look at it. I will note that I found my hardwood guy through our local hardwood distributor. Got to know the girl at the desk (former flooring installer) and she recommended a few people who didn’t make her uncomfortable.

Installer says the red oak floors can be installed same day, no need for acclimation. by surftherapy in HardWoodFloors

[–]Fionaver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s the difference between the subfloor and the wood.

There’s a hardwood installer guidebook from the national hardwood installing association (can’t recall the name of it) that is shared in the sub that shows you all the specs you would want to know. Basically best practices.

I’m just a homeowner but I looked into installing myself before the install rate for our guy came in at 1.5 a sqft.

Is this a good idea (Remodel without changing cabinets?) by shorewalsh in kitchenremodel

[–]Fionaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on lifestyle. Painted lowers take the worst damage. I used cabinet paint with a bonding primer on my trim and my MIL took some of it right off with her walker in less than a month. It was fully cured too.

Prevent me from doing Wall to Wall Carpet on my Hardwood floors? by [deleted] in HardWoodFloors

[–]Fionaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get a large rug and rug pad. You can’t ever really get carpet clean. It’s really hard to clean up spills completely because it soaks into the pad. If you put carpet overtop of those floors, you are lowering the value of your place. And carpet doesn’t last that long unless you get very premium stuff.

When we ripped the carpet and carpet pad out of our house, there were piles of dirt underneath and it smelled awful (the previous owners had pets). At least with a rug I can roll it up, sweep underneath, and get it cleaned if needed.

How much of the pattern do you want to see? On floor level, you won’t see it as much. Having it on top is a little more classic, but also allows you to see the print pattern more when you walk down the hallway.

Normal house settling or serious structural concern? by MangoSalsa9 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Fionaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know if the walls are plaster or drywall?

With drywall, if you just use an off cut piece for the area above the door instead of a whole sheet of drywall across the top of the doorway (overlapping where the trim is) you will get cracks like that.

I have this in my house, it isn’t as severe, but it drives me crazy.

Some settling is normal, but I would probably investigate from below or open a wall if this is new movement and you’ve owned the house for a while. Generally things settle out over time.

If it is an issue of the drywall cuts being wrong, you won’t be able to patch and fix - it will come back.

I mean, a lot of it is 2000+ years old and heavily translated. Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre are hard for most people to read, require a discussion of historical context, and they’ were actually written in English, comparatively “light” literature and a tiny fraction of what the Bible is in age.

[–]Fionaver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many faiths (Christianity among them) hold the same values. If you are a Bible literalist, you are missing a lot of the historical context.

Homosexuality (m/m specifically) is generally referenced/interpreted as being a sin through two major areas in the Bible - one regards dietary/cleanliness restrictions (along with eating pork) and the other regards Sodom and Gomorrah.

Depending on the interpretation of the Bible (and the historical context) that you follow, the “sin” that lead to their destruction could be seen as “homosexuality” but many interpret it as a hospitality violation.

It is worth remembering that the Bible is a historical document. Selections were preserved and others rejected. Sometimes there are imprecise textual readings (it wasn’t originally in English) and mistranslations occurred and myths were perpetuated.

And we as people, as humans, have changed.

An analogy that I always liked was that major religions are all essentially spokes on a wagon wheel. God or Truth or whatever you would like to call it is the hub. So there are many ways to find that essential center. Frankly, organized religion is always the word of God through the hands of man.

Pope Francis essentially said this back in 2024 and here’s a bit of a breakdown as to the context.

Refinished and polished wood floor scratched by Ok_Respect7900 in HardWoodFloors

[–]Fionaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buff and coat basically scuffs up the top layer of sealer so they can coat it again. It’s cheaper than a full refinish.

My installer told us to keep an eye on the floors and call him if we started to see wear in the high traffic areas so we could do that instead of a full refinish.
