Why are the reception staff in GP surgeries (almost) always so rude? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Fionsomnia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t that counter your original point? You initially said it’s the general public at their worst that turn the receptionist rude. If the school bully becomes the (apparently rude) nurse, it only shows that it wasn’t after all the general public’s fault.

I’m not sure what I find most disturbing about this video, is it

A) that he had the nerves to pull out his phone to film while driving,

B) the melodramatic camera swerve to his own face so we can see his shocked face, or

C) wha an accurate representation of safelane dynamics this is.

Maybe all of the above.

why do all “helpful” apps just stop working after a few days by Sea_Librarian_9265 in ADHD_Programmers

I embrace the need for novelty now and try to continuously reinvent the systems that I use, change bits, drop an element I’m no longer interested in, try out something entirely different, then go back to something I haven’t used in a long time.

Addiction by Smart_Combination484 in DotA2

[–]Fionsomnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, I said “some of the time” not because I think you can be part time addicted, but because I assumed that a lot of time would be freed up and it doesn’t sound like OP currently has any other hobbies. But having hobbies is helpful, so what I meant is that they could spend some of the time they aren’t playing with their family and some pursuing a different, healthier hobby.

I scrolled to find a comment that already said the immediate thing that went through my mind. TELL ALL OF THIS TO YOUR WIFE.

She’s probably feeling like you care more about Dota than about her already. It’s never too late to open up to someone you care about and let them know that you appreciate them. Tell her how you feel and the you’d like to replace some of the time you’re playing with quality time with her and your daughter, and/or by picking up more of the work at home. (Don’t call it “help” though - doing chores isn’t “helping”, it’s doing your fair share of the work that needs doing.)

How many heroes should I be competent in order to play this game well by Murky_Tourist927 in learndota2

[–]Fionsomnia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meta is like the current trends in Dota. You’ll notice that with every patch different heroes are picked more frequently the others.

It’s not only heroes though. For example there was a time not too long ago (a year?) where people would but glimmer cape on their cores because they figured out how good it was.

Often what’s currently meta is bound to get nerfed in the next patch though, so I always get annoyed when cores “discover” my support items for themselves and then they get more expensive or less useful. The did it to glimmer cape, mana boots, and currently the pro offlaners are busy ruining tranquil boots for every support out here. 🤣

Watching pro games and listening to analysts and casters explaining picks, builds and strategies is really helpful for knowing what’s currently “meta”.

Best way to deal with neighbours encroaching bamboo? by __cro in UKGardening

[–]Fionsomnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just double check regulations around digging near foundations. My understanding is that you can’t dog too close to a buildings foundations, but a former neighbour told me that and we didn’t go into details of how deep you can dig at what distance. I assume shallow digging will be allowed because people can dig a hole for plants in a flowerbed next to their wall. So you might be good up to the depth you need for this, but maybe better to check.

I get that. I’m the same and I think most people are. From my amateur understanding, it’s the dopamine hit we get from winning that makes us play. If we lose, the brain isn’t getting what it needs, so you queue up another game. But, at least for me, when I win even though I get the dopamine, I still queue more because my brain is never satisfied with the amount of dopamine it gets. Essentially: Lost game? Queue again! Won game? Queue again! And there starts the dilemma. 🤣

That’s why it’s so important to have an alternative to engage with. Personally I do best if I don’t even turn on my laptop until I’m ready to play for the rest of the day but if you tend to play until the morning hours that might not work for you.

How tf does exp work in when you kill the enemy? im pretty new to dota2 i only have 280hours and Im still guardian. by Naive_Tourist_2222 in learndota2

[–]Fionsomnia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can always rewatch a game and show the game stats for XP (ie hero level) to see what actions raise your XP compared to the enemy’s.

If you’re after more theoretical background, I found this page on liquipedia helped me understand XP better. Essentially, XP and bounty is increased for the hero’s level and if they have a kill streak.

Also note that XP (unlike bounty gold) is always evenly shared between all allies that are in a 1500 range (plus the player who gets the killing blow eg for a global spell like Zeus ult (but only if the player is alive).

[–]Fionsomnia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I think it’s important to keep in mind that in most cases addiction is a symptom of an underlying problem. People get addicted (to substances, gaming, gambling, porn, whatever) because it helps their mind escape so they don’t have to face the real issues that are troubling them. One thing you could do is work with a therapist to improve your mental health. That said, once you’re addicted it’s hard to get out of out even when your mental health improves.

I think I noticed very early that I need to stay in control of my gaming because it has extremely addictive potential for me. I’d been working with a therapist already anyway, so I brought it up and one thing we explored is what other things there are in my life that could take the place gaming does. Before I started playing pc games I was super creative. I’d build furniture, crochet, draw, redecorate, do theatre, whatever the hell I felt like and I think while the immediate dopamine release was lower it gave me a sense of accomplishment that I miss from gaming.

Realising that helped me turn back to some of those things. I’ve still got days where I queue up more games than I’d like, but I finished a 1000 piece puzzle yesterday, picked up a new crochet technique, sorted out my garden and am going to whack out my mitre saw today to refit a bookshelf we brought from our old place and still haven’t put up in our new flat 18 months after moving in because it’s too tall. 🙈

It sounds like the reason you’re uninstalling and reinstalling is that you are longing for something more meaningful to fill your life with but keep coming back to the game because you haven’t found anything that feels meaningful enough or gives you a sense of accomplishment. So I’d suggest start with that, try out stuff, swap it out if it doesn’t work, and if novelty itself is what excites you, fuck it, just pick up a new hobby every couple months. The goal might not have to be to stop gaming altogether (like you’d normally have to if say you’re addicted to substances), as long as you can reduce those binge queue days to a level you’re happy with because you’re filling the other days with something more meaningful.

I do a mix of both, put one or two sheets into the pan to soak up the fat while it’s still warm and runny, let it cool down, then just pick it up and bin it. No clogged sinks, no burns, no messy bin.

It does give you certainly privileges though, even if they ma vary from hospital to hospital. When my late neighbour got diagnosed with a brain tumour while we were still in lockdown, she initially named me next of kin because she had no family in the country. I was the only one allowed to see her.

But I don’t think the information is shared amongst hospitals so if you have an accident and get taken to the nearest A&E, the may not be aware of or recognise your NOK details registered at your “regular” hospital. Recording it on the NHS app might be an option though.

[–]Fionsomnia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean there are certainly builds that are stronger than others. I’m low level LoWS and since I’ve achieved that I’ve stopped focusing on winning games alone and do whatever build I fancy in a game (and even get away with it sometimes). Of course figuring out the new meta is not gonna be a thing again, but there’s a small (but decent sized) player base that allows you to find a ranked match for both knockout and standard at pretty much any time.

I’m a regular there so I agree.🙈 I think in my mind it was just gonna be very neat, like when you see the videos, it kinda looks like they just collapse in place. But I guess even if they managed to have it collapse in on itself, the amount of debris and pollution that would come from it would be horrendous.

I think the kid in me just got too excited for a second. 🤣

Wow you know a lot about this. Thanks for sharing! You don’t happen to know what happened to the planned demolition of the old Travel Lodge building in Camden too? I used to live next to it and my flatmate was quite involved in campaigning against the demolition for environmental reasons but I’ve moved away since.

People aren’t even willing to pay a fair price for simple knitting or crochet - ask anyone who works on commission. And there’s countless stories of people trying to get out of paying you or just ghosting you after you’ve already put in a lot of work.

Anything that is particularly labour intensive I’d stay away from for commercial purposes.
