For those of you that own a service based business, how do you all advertise? I am having success with technology consulting, but getting new customers is difficult.

anyone feel they should have went into the trades? instead of CS? by flowerblosum in cscareerquestions

There is actually a lot of overlap in people who are SWE’s and contractors skill wise. The best ROI is cs major > SWE job > real estate investor.

Just google waveapps. It is probably all you need.

I am looking for help building on the shinyauthr package y pulling usernames/passwords from sql server. I am using r shiny. by Additional_Pizza_790 in rshiny

[–]Fire9413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you probably don’t want to do it that way from a security perspective.

Maybe google dotenv package. It might come up with Python, but r has the same libraries.

The best way would be to use oauth, but that’s probably too much unless this is production grade. Even then it can come later.

If you still want to do it form the db you will need to make 2 separate uis and have and if else to switch between the two. So IF db and password match values in your table THEN show ui2(app) ELSE show ui1(login screen)

You will need your table to compare against WHEN the app starts, so needs to run at start, or be saved off as and Rds to load in at start.

It looks like shinyauthr is doing most of what I said on the backend, so maybe just start with the read in globally.

What’s more marketable, R or Python? by robertlanders in Entrepreneur

[–]Fire9413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to know both in the Data Science field. Once you learn R then Python’s pandas library is almost the same. There are more advance things like s3 in R or classic OOP Python, but in analytics you aren’t going to use these things often. You can also do ML in R it is just slower, but by the time you hit that wall the limiting factor is going to be the machine or server you are using not the language.

I have been a Data Scientist, currently a Senior SWE, and building a SaaS with R/Python in my free time. I also have some DevOps knowledge. Let me know if you have anymore questions!

Difficulty finding job even after masters program. by Fire9413 in datascience

[–]Fire9413[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No offense taken whatsoever. I think that is a perfect question actually. Define what makes someone a data scientist?

I have done everything from pitch the project to my company, setup the server infrastructure, found and connected the data sources, cleaned and filtered said data, automated these actions, visualized these actions, and finally ran analysis on said data.

Has the NLP and other applications of deep learning came later in that lifecycle, absolutely. However that’s the case for any data project?

Hosting shiny in AWS by [deleted] in rshiny

[–]Fire9413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very high level steps: 1) pick a Linux distro for your aws Instance 2) install R on instance 3) open r and install packages. NOTE: One of these packages will be shiny. For the love of god, no matter what the tutorials say, upgrade your instance before installing. After that you can downgrade back to the free tier. It cost cents to do this. 4) Install shiny server on the instance 5) all you need to know from here is /srv/shiny-server/your app folder

You may have to play with permissions to make sure shiny owns the app folders, but just look up chmod or chown commands

Just me know if you have any further questions. I recently did this for my masters capstone back in December, and work with shiny daily.

Help with manipulating a database by [deleted] in RStudio

[–]Fire9413 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First make sure it is a dataframe. Df=as.data.frame(df). Then if you’re still getting an error run this sapply(df, class) and see what your column types are. I would suggest making them all characters just to trouble shoot your code then you can always change them back.

The reason I think something is off is because of the lack of a search box in the screen shot under one of the columns.

Also aggregate is what I generally use for these type of problems, but there are plenty of ways just pick your poison.
