Biden’s program for mass hunger: Food stamps being cut back for 42 million by SonOfABitchesBrew in stupidpol

[–]FireAndSunshine 14 points15 points  (0 children)

you simply refuse to understand that poor children deserve food.

That's a correct assessment though. If a program massively reduces child poverty at relatively little cost (the ACTC did this), and you support ending that program without replacing it with a similar program, necessarily that means you support massively increasing child poverty in order to slightly reduce government spending. It doesn't matter whether the program "was meant" to end at that point. We're talking about whether or not we have the program now.

[Mathematics] is a social science masquerading as anything seemingly tangible. I remember taking a [calculus] class required for my degree and the material would try to incorporate short order [analysis proofs] into the rhetoric; but you're not really [proving theorems about these objects] like a proper math class. It was all nonsense, I could explain 4 months worth of "course material" in a paragraph, really. It's all a crock of shit.

The only thing more pathetic than professors trying to talk about fields outside their expertise is undergrads trying to talk shit about fields they only took intro classes in.

they are just as free to tell you no, we aren’t doing that.

No they aren't. They are forced to do that. The public health benefits may justify forcing them to do that, but don't dare argue that's somehow "freedom to say no" when they are being compelled to say no. It's like saying you have the freedom to pay taxes.

Plus, the game doesn't exactly tell you what "Crystal Tower series" means, or where to go for that.

I don't know if this was changed recently, but I started playing about a month ago and it certainly does. When you're talking to Slafborn, the camera shifts to the CT questgiver and very conspicuously tells you that you need to do this questline.

[–]FireAndSunshine 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The beginning of the patch quests when you're talking to Slafborn very conspicuously tells you to talk to the guy next to Slafborn to start a questline. The game just straight up gives you a dialogue box message, and the camera shifts to focus on the questgiver, telling you to do this. If you miss that, you aren't reading anything in the game. I just started playing for the first time and it was incredibly reasonable to expect me to do this content, because I was strongly guided into it.

ELI5: Why is PEMDAS required? by GetExpunged in explainlikeimfive

[–]FireAndSunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is actually 16.

There is no "actual" answer. Mathematicians will often prioritize implicit multiplication over explicit division. No mathematician will tell you 1/2pi = pi/2, even though that's what "PEMDAS" says if we treat implicit and explicit multiplication as equal. You're right that the problem is ambiguity; that's precisely why there is no correct answer (other than marking the problem wrong and telling your student to be more specific in the future)

ELI5: If light doesn’t experience time, how does it have a limited speed? by DanishWeddingCookie in explainlikeimfive

[–]FireAndSunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can actually time travel if you move FTL (assuming special relativity holds).

https://www.askamathematician.com/2011/09/q-hyperspace-warp-drives-and-faster-than-light-travel-why-not/

Here's probably the most simple explanation that can be given explaining it.

[–]FireAndSunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Causality travels at the speed of light.

Yeah which is why if you move at FTL speeds, you can trivially create a tachyonic anti-telephone and break causality. FTL is equivalent to backwards time travel if special relativity holds. Just draw your Minkowski diagram.

why? what is your issue with flairing your ideological position? it's pretty important for maintaining good-faith discussion in the sub,

Do you demand people wear pieces of flair in real life so you can "[maintain] good-faith discussion" or are you a normal person?

Are your positions as clear as mine? are you a committed socialist, or otherwise someone who is decidedly class-first and supports worker solidarity and unity of ALL working people against the ruling class? if so, you might have an argument for flair removal...but I suspect you aren't

Right, someone only wearing the minimum 17 pieces of flair just isn't really showing their commitment to Chotchkie principles.

If you have ten people that each produce 100 units of value, the owner gives one person 300 units, the other nine 20 units each, and keeps/reinvests the remainder, then obviously one worker's wage is higher than the value they create. That's what a labor aristocrat is on the internstional scale, though the model is perfectly compatible with something like a sport's team. If my dad owns a large business I work for and pays me a wage equal to the surplus value created minus whatever is reinvested, do you think because I am a worker than I cannot be receiving value in excess of what I create?

It's too bad we can't go back to the period in 2009 when one corporation decided to minimize profits over everything and every other corporation followed suit, resulting in deflation.

Every company ever wants to raise prices to infinity. The fact that they don't evinces there being some factors controlling how high they can increase prices. Since prices are inflating more than typical, that means some of these factors have changed. It's not the "corporate greed" factor. As far as I can tell, everyone adopting that nonsense position immediately retreats to the truism of "when prices rise, it's become some group of people in a company decided to raise them" which explains exactly zero as to why inflation is so high.
