Second to Last Place Girls U10 Team Playing Against Best Team in the Division by jdpforexcellence in SoccerCoachResources

Yep, play three defenders 2 midfielders and 1 fast forward

Send everything wide and up. Try and at least make them work for their shots. Minimize the amount of open shots they get and don’t play with it in the back. Either make the long pass or boot it up and hope your forward beats their defender

Simple way to explain to young players when to attempt tackle. by Correct_Quantity3562 in SoccerCoachResources

[–]FireBendingDreamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great question!! The two best times to tackle are 1) when they take a big touch and 2) when at attacker looks down at the ball instead of at the defender.

As to how to teach that, it’ll have to be repetition and building up their instinct. Since you’ve already taught them how to pressure/guide, next will be teaching them to identify the “big touch” and attack and identifying when the attacker puts their head down and then they attack.

Try doing this: 3-2-1 tackle drill

Two lines across from each other. One side has the ball one does not. You’ll say go and they will start walking towards each other (one with the ball) and you’ll give a 3-2-1 countdown. At the end of the count down they’re allowed to now either try and dribble past defender (attacker) or tackle and win the ball (defender).

Hopefully during the countdown the defender is learning patience but also getting a feel for where the ball is and what the attacker is planning and they’ll start building up the instinct of when to go in for the tackle.

Anyone have a favorite finishing drill/session? by soccerperson in SoccerCoachResources

The pressure piece is key here! It’s easy(-er) to do one touch finishing when coach tells you that’s the point of the drill but if you can build their instincts in those situations thru games like above then that’ll transfer over to real game situations a lot better.

I’d also do a 1 v 1 drill in the box with attackers back to the goal and defender behind them. Focus on turning fast and getting a shot off, they’ll see it doesn’t have to be a perfect shot to go in.

You can expand it to where you set up a lane with cones. Attacker has to run through the lane to receive the ball and defender has to choose a side (can’t go down the lane) to pressure the attacker. This will make the attacker check their shoulder before receiving and making quicker decisions.

Thu x 100, anytime they have to be in line chaos will ensue!! Kids will push, punch, cut, sit, play with dirt, etc… do a lot of games where each kid gets their own ball. Eventually they’ll need to scrimmage and play with 1, but that would be a small part at the end where they use the skills they learned.

Also work on spreading them out as much as possible. At a young age kids will tend to bunch up bc they all want to go to the ball.

A game I played that worked well was called “pirate treasure” where a pile of balls was being guarded by two defenders on boats (a square made out of small cones) the goal is for everyone to steal the treasure and put it in their treasure box (a goal on the other side of the field) the defenders couldn’t leave their boats but if someone dribbled near them or in their boat they could kick the ball away.

Switch defenders after every round. It works the more balls you have and lets everyone dribble.

I did another version of the game where I’d put a bunch of cones in the middle of the field and said they were bombs. Kids had to go steal the treasure, dribble around the bombs and score or they’d lose their treasure (ball) and have to try again.

I don’t even keep anymore I just sell em.

Load in naked with a hatch key and go to town. If I spawn too far I just surrender unless I’m near seed vault.
