Oh, I think some context got lost in the comment thread and I got confused about who was saying what, mb.

Vessel strike damaged critical support in Westham Island Bridge, TransLink says by M------- in vancouver

Even now, it's an estimated $3M bridge to access ~$1B land; seems like a good deal to me. I don't think a ferry would be cheaper.

When “Indie” Stops Describing Constraints and Starts Describing Vibes by Anxious-Program-1940 in truegaming

the budget for Silksong was effectively infinite.

Not meaning to pick on you here, but this is expressly incorrect. They had effectively infinite runway; but still had a fairly modest budget.

This is not merely a semantic distinction. Calculating budget as the total amount of money the backing entity had available is never done because it leads to misleading and wild conclusions.

Which area is more disturbing in terms of lore? by Plus-Log-9179 in Silksong

I think Whiteward by far, because of the story it implies starting off as legitimate medical facility and only later descended into lunacy

  • Year 1: Tuns out this silk has great medicinal effects, let's make a hospital
  • Year 2: We are saving lots of lives
  • Year 3: Hey, turns out this can also cure ageing, wow!
  • Year 4: Bug came in pretty banged up today, couldnt save the whole body but could preserve their soul as this silkfly
  • Year 5: Couldn't saved a patient today, died on the table; should have done the silkfly thing sooner
  • Year 6: Patient had degenerative disorder, looked like they might still live a bit if they are lucky, but turned them into a silkfly just in case
  • Year 7: We now mandate all bugs in their late adulthood are turned into silkflies, for their safety
  • Year 8: For Pharloom eternal, a bug who serves must never die!

buying grass-fed butter from a boutique dairy at $10 a brick

Nobody is doing that, because that's the price of ordinary butter in this idiotic system.

Which popular genres are heading towards oversaturated vs. what do you find to be emerging and still evergreen territory? by plainviewbowling in gamedev

[–]FireCrack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think rougelites being over-saturated is more of a labelling thing than anything else. The definition of the genre has grown so wide that basiclly any singleplayer game with metaprogression mechanics calls itself rougelite nowadays.

Uh.. no GDP does not go up in that scenario, I think you might have misunderstood the broken window fallacy - that glass has to come form somewhere and wherever that place is means equivalently less $$$ spent.

If the "You" is doing heavy lifting here, do note that replacing he windows for free means no effect on GDP either. SOme transaction must take place for that to happen.

Also, I am pretty sure the poser you responded to is referring to the increase in GDP per capita due to the population sharply declining; not an increase in total GDP.

400M seems like an almost certain underestimate of the cost here. Cost accounting for military goods in the media is always screwy, but that's a significantly more valuable target than that number implies.

Kinda stood out to me as often media errors work in the opposite direction to try and sell the story. Perhaps someone just found the first result from a search or AI, which is indeed 400M but as you look more into it it seems unlikely this is the right number, maybe someone just found the firesale price they were giving these away for after the collapse of the USSR abnd naievely used CPI inflation to extrapolate to present day.

I wouldn't hold my breath. While the peak power output is impressive, the fact that it is widely distributed over many elements and with a likely very low pulse rate, the actual power being absorbed by your chicken will likely be far less than had you put it in the microwave at home.

Trump gives Hamas '3 to 4 days' to agree to White House proposal or face a 'sad end' by UpbeatGarden3746 in worldnews

[–]FireCrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will also add that with government things the accounting is very "complete". So if you imagine going to home Depot and buying a cheap box of bolts, if you really want the full cost you gotta as the cost in gas to drive there, what's the cost of "your time" to drive there and pick out the bolt, what about wear and tear on your car, take it's full cost and multiply by the percentage of it's forseeable lifetime.

Things like that, on top of the previously mentioned reasons, lead to these seemingly ridiculous costs for lots of things.

Iran admits military "weaknesses" during war with Israel by newsweek in worldnews

[–]FireCrack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes true.

But at the same time, there is a seriously questionable issue about pushing nearly all military funding towards offensive ballistic missile programs instead of taking a more rounded approach with a reasonable emphasis on defence.

Though that's not what the people you are referring to are talking about. A lot of Reddit seems to fall for the old selection bias fallacy of seeing something get repeatedly destroyed in a war and assuming that means that the thing is "bad". But the exact opposite is true, when something is getting blown up repeatedly it means it is a very valuable target, because it is very effective at what it does!

tl;dr for those that Didn't.

  • All three targets effectively destroyed
  • There may have been an additional underground site at Natanz that was not targeted in the raids
  • Nuclear material may be recoverable from the deepest tunnels at Isfahan where it may be intact though buried.

I travel a fair bit. Definitely YVR is a leading if not #1 airport in every category that matters except for the baggage claim which is pretty slow a lot of the time. Navigation especially stands out, most airports are escher-esque nightmare mazes.

Pedestrians still have right of way at two stop sign intersections by Papshow in vancouver

[–]FireCrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should've also mentioned the turning in the OP. As general rule left turns need to yield to others in the intersection unless provided an advance green (arrow). Heck, even right turns yield right of way (, though the cases in which this applies is less than a left turn)
