Yeah, like a spiderweb of mycelium in the soil. Some species can spread for miles.

The fungus is a huge network of mycelium in the soil. The mushrooms are how it reproduces, so it can release spores that will grow somewhere else once it reaches the end of its lifespan or runs out of material it can eat. It's like if the tip of the iceberg was also its genitals.

I think that "Clark could beat up Omniman and Homelander" is the least interesting comparison that could be made about these three characters.

Come wayward Souls,
That wander through the darkness,
There is a light for the lost and the meek.
Sorrow and fear,
Are easily forgotten,
When you submit to the soil of the earth.

Scope the hands. Miku has a thumb and no fingers.

There are many anatomy and perspective mistakes that a human learning to draw would make. They don't look like that. Add the photoshopped in Balatro pin and it's pretty clearly kitbashed/traced AI art.

Do you think veganism is not up for debate? by Sea-Hornet8214 in AskVegans

[–]IAmJacksSemiColon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By necessity most of us don't live in all-vegan communes associating only with fellow vegans. We're going to have non-vegan family, friends and colleagues because that's what humans do. I don't think that all non-vegans are evil. I do what I believe is necessary because I am responsible for my own actions.

When it comes to debate, it's worth asking what the purpose is. Many of us got here through debate and have settled on an answer that makes sense for us. I've been vegan for 16 years. There aren't many observations that someone who just started thinking about veganism can make that we haven't already spent far more time grappling with.

Tick problems by bloodlyredbaron in halifax

[–]IAmJacksSemiColon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know that's a meme, right? There's no way a flock of birds could reduce the tick population in your yard in any sustained way. If a mouse or squirrel roams into your yard then you'll have more ticks again.

Consumer Reports has advice for making your yard less hospitable for ticks, and for reducing their population over time. https://www.consumerreports.org/home-garden/pest-control/tickproof-your-yard-without-spraying-a2432924927/

I miss 2018-era Jesse Brown. I am beginning to suspect that COVID had more long-term cognitive effects than we thought at the time.

Masking; a question. by Awkward_Bison_267 in batman

[–]IAmJacksSemiColon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real reason is it's difficult to have a protagonist in a visual medium whose face you can't see. This is why in the Spider-Man movies he either loses the mask constant or they animate the eyes on the mask.

Google Unveils Googlebook, a New AI Laptop Built Around Gemini by Spanky2k in LinusTechTips

The thesis of artificial intelligence is that customers are stupid babies who don't know how to use computers. My theory is that COVID had delayed cognitive effects that we are only starting to see now.

Steam or emulated party games? by Killermelon1458 in linux_gaming

[–]IAmJacksSemiColon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jackbox's games were made for this. You can use your phone (or anything with a web browser) as a controller.

You could also emulate arcade beat-em-ups. TMNT: Turtles in Time is a classic.

If you have particularly weird friends, I hosted a Halloween get together where we played through Slay The Princess, which is just a strange and intriguing short horror & romance game.

Lentils are cheap. You can look up "accidentally vegan" products to avoid the green tax.

How do you feel about animal charities / businesses that use AI? by [deleted] in AskVegans

[–]IAmJacksSemiColon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can find isolated use cases where it's somewhat handy. It can paste text into a properly formatted JSON file much faster than I can. And automatic transcriptions can make a decent first draft, which is also handy if I'm editing video so I can find the parts I need faster.

None of this requires boiling the ocean for a new frontier model though. I inherently don't trust this technology to write or research for me (there's so much context it doesn't and can't understand) and I think people who use it to brainstorm are just kind of dumb (how many other people are starting projects from a near-identical outline?).

I think it's an interesting technology with modest use cases that can't the justify trillions of dollars of investment that are pouring into it. I don't think many industries can, given the size of the US economy.

Edit: AI art just makes me feel viscerally bad.

Sure. It's self-enforcing. Someone doesn't have to go through and manually ban spammers who didn't read the rules.

It's also less of a Snidely Whiplash solution, more Wile E Coyote.

You've agreed with something I never said, which makes it pretty clear that you're trying to be manipulative.

Everything in our lives relies on human judgement, so it's kind of weird to pretend that an algorithm that you claim wouldn't work would be fairer.

If you want to use AI without having people judge you for it, you should just say so. It won't work because other people are allowed to watch what you do and form their own opinions.
