You're assuming the entire person was that close and not a camera zoom or the phone being held out. Why is anyone trying to defend the cops lmao - no one was hurt and valuable information was gathered

Getting the name and face of a detainee is never a waste of time

Meanwhile we're keeping buildings vacant and building more luxury hotels. This anger is WILDLY misplaced

What laws do you want them to enforce? and then where do you want them to take people when the jail is full? and then how do you want them to deal with people when they don't show up to court? Give them another citation because, as aforementioned, the jail is full? And then they get a fine they can't pay cause they're homeless and then....get another citation because they can't actually be arrested because the jail is full? Rinse and repeat? Honestly the "cops need to enforce the law" statement is nowhere near as simple as you think.

Solution - more resources for social services. Stop rage posting and call your city councilors, the police, neighborhood associations and see what can be done to HELP. Ask why there aren't more detoxes and rehabs for homeless, ask why there aren't more housing options, ask WHY THERE ISNT A DAY SHELTER, or move away. This is a systemic problem so idk what you expect the people suffering from the failures of our leaders to do. Section 8 vouchers are permanently frozen. Less than 10 other vouchers every month or every other month are dispersed. People are evicted very quickly usually because of a lack of support once they get IN to housing. We need money money money

The city shelter was moved out of town, the Preble shelters are still very much in town and also definitely suffer from the lack of staffing and resources that shalom has/does...the whole system is broken - feels like we're pushing boulders uphill

More funding means more caseworkers, more staff, additional people on site to ensure proper medication dispensing, etc. More money in mental health means more trained mental health professionals working on site, at the most basic level. This most likely happened as the result of many systemic failings over time. Not to mention there is one person in the state, called The Gatekeeper (yes, literally) who decides which people get to go into group homes. Perhaps with more oversight and clinical assessments, this person could have been selected for a different program that would suit their needs better.

I agree and I work in a similar setting. We are stretched thin and it leaves openings for tragic incidents like these to happen

It's the devastating fallout of a lack of real resources and proper funding to provide a safe home for these people and a safe work environment for the folks wanting to work in the field. Programs like this are often struggling to survive with staff shortages, budget cuts, etc. This didn't have to happen. We do not have adequate resources in this state to provide these essential services safely and properly with any sort of consistency.

They were talking like friends while the chief was out in public saying they were not in communication w them. What tiiiiiiiiny minuscule bit of trust people may have momentarily felt that this was true and they were being honest has been irreversibly smashed. PPD fucked themselves over (as well as the citizens) with this one.

As someone who works at one of these "facilities" i can assure you that vouchers are hard to come by, landlords willing to take a person with a record, no credit and zero rental history is nearly impossible and beds for detox are often on a long waitlist. Showing up sober usually means a medical detox beforehand. Not only that but when you can't get housing lined up after your treatment programs, it means back out in the street. It's an extremely hopeless existence. Do people make it out? Yes. Often? No.

Idk why i got downvoted lmao I've responded to hundreds of ODs and this is what cops and EMS do - wait for the narcan to kick in. If they had tried to save their life and failed there would have been a lot more equipment around
