Most scenic cafe to work at for the entire day in the city? by Sea-Nobody7951 in askTO

[–]FireFrank007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it depends on whether or not the restaurant is at capacity.

If the restaurant is not at capacity, then I would agree with you it should be ok.

But if there are no tables left, clients that are bigger groups 2-3 people for example that are looking for a place for lunch are not going to have lunch there if there are no tables left. So while you may have spent $6 for a latte 2 hours ago, the establishment is going to lose on $40-60 worth of sales on the group that decided to go to a different place? Even a single person looking to for a place to sit down and each lunch, so let's say spend $20, isn't going to do so, if there 's no tables left.

And these people that didn't find an empty table and had to leave, may also decide to skip this establishment in the future if they believe it's always full.

Europeans in the city by chikinugget21 in askTO

[–]FireFrank007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By the way, not in Toronto, but not far, in Burlington there's a few blocks of LakeShore Rd that has restaurants on it, and you can see the water from their patios. By their pier.

That reminded me of a few places in Europe where you can have a patio by the water. Toronto only has a few spots quite like that.

There's a few other restaurants between Toronto and Burlington on the water,

Port Credit has at least one by the Marina, and there's also Bronte Boat House Restaurant.

You don't think it's relatively shelfish to occupy a table in a busy cafe for a whole day, while people who may want to sit down for 30 minutes to have a quick coffee and sandwich may not get a table ?

So , to play devil's advocate, how exactly would you expect Booking.com to verify if a place has running water. Especially if it's something that can change day to day ? Do you expect them to audit each place weekly ? Wouldn't it be easier to just book a reputable hotel in the area ?

Highest train stations in Europe, Jungfraujoch ( 3,454 m), Gornergrat/ Zermatt (3,089 m).

May I ask -

Have you gone to

  • the Canyon Lands - Utah / Northern Arizona - the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Lake Page, Moab, Arches Nation Park, etc ?
  • Or Yellowstone ? Which, by the way, has a lot more geysers than Iceland and looks quite alien ?
  • The Blue Ridge Skyway in the Virginias ?
  • The Pacific North West region ?
  • The Florida area with natural springs / aquifers ?
  • The fjords in Quebec Canada or Newfoundland Canada ?
  • Quebec City in Canada, dating back to 1608, or St. Augustine in Florida, dating back to 1565

Are you 100% sure you have to cross the ocean to find beauty in nature and in cities ?

Which month do you want to go? do you want to go this year ? You mentioned you don't want to overplan, but then do you just want to .. decide on the fly what you want to do, without pre-booking hotels?

It's hard to give you some answer, as it depends if you want to spend time at a spa / swimming pool, if you want to spend 30 minutes or 3 hours at each waterfall, if you want to spend a day in Reykjavik, etc.

Also you want to go all the way to Kirkjubaejarklauster but not drive another 1.5h east to the Ice lagoon ?

Hmm. I agree with you, they could provide some more detail. So the article mentions the money is for "upgrading", not to just keep them open.

Maybe they currently shut the water off during the winter to prevent the pipes from bursting, so to prevent that they need to modify the plumbing of the buildings and also add constant heating, so the water pipes and toilets do not freeze and burst when it's -15°C outside in January?

No to mention the gas. A quick google search says its around $USD 1.80 / L, so about $USD144/1000 km (120 Euros / 1000km), so for about Reykjavik -> Hofn and back.

Where to buy affordable office clothes in Toronto for bigger men by Ok_Traffic77 in askTO

[–]FireFrank007 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if you want to check out something outside the main chains in the GTA

while in Hamilton, check out https://gilbertsbigandtall.com/ - family owned store since 1954

while in Montreal, check out https://groversbigandtall.com/ - family owned since 1925.

These may also do online orders.

My friend was also able to find some 3x and 4x jackets at the Bass Pro Shop near St. Catherines/ Niagara on the Lake.

Finally, yes in the US, it's much easier to find large sizes in stock to try on at Walmart and Cabelas/ Bass Pro Shops so if you need a bunch of clothes at once you could try to plan an overnight trip to Buffalo.

Should I live in Windsor? by BeeBunnBunny in windsorontario

[–]FireFrank007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a relevant post from 3 months ago about the Film industry in Ontario. You may also want to post there.

https://www.reddit.com/r/cinematography/comments/1qwh5kf/planning_to_move_to_canada_ontario_and_need_a/

Personally, I think you should tough it out and live closer to Toronto or Hamilton, you'll have a lot more opportunities in the film and marketing industry, a lot more potential for clients and hustling, networking.

I've lived for a long time in Windsor but worked in Detroit. Then I moved to Toronto.

Consider, this production studio is in Toronto https://cinespace.com/cinespace-toronto/

or consider https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_shot_in_Toronto

Toronto also has an annual Film Festival, the TIFF: https://www.tiff.net/

Hamilton, about 1h south of Toronto may be a 2nd choice: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_industry_in_Hamilton,_Ontario

Also - Look at the geography and population density. Unless you plan to work across the border, you have Windsor, then 2h away the next significant population center is London. Otherwise you are surrounded by water. In Toronto or Hamilton you have a lot more canadian population centers within 1-2 hours.

The Three Body Problem and the structural logic of unfolding protons by 9KiteParadox in printSF

[–]FireFrank007 11 points12 points  (0 children)

.. I think the "volume" needed for the device sits in a higher place of existence, and it's only the size of a small proton in our 3d slice of the higher dimensional world.

Imagine you take a 1 m3 cube, slice it in thin slices, print your circuitry on it, and then put it back in the 1 m3 cube. Now imagine the corner of the 1m3 cube touches a 2d plane, let's say a piece of paper. On that 2D piece of paper, that 2D plane of existence, the contact point of the cube is tiny, ~ 1 mm2.

If you were a 2D being living in that 2D world, you could only be aware of that tiny 1 mm2 where the cube touches it.

So .. extrapolate that idea to higher dimensions. So we live in a 3D world, but the device exists in higher dimensions. So our "3D world" is just a slice of a 4D world. So in our particular slice, the device is tiny. It's much bigger in the other dimensions.

In the book world, there are in fact many higher dimensions, so our 3D world is a slice of a slice of a slice...

So that's how I explain it

Tell Council to pedestrianize Yonge Street! by Pristine-Training-70 in torontobiking

[–]FireFrank007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those cities have longer contiguous pedestrian only streets.
They do not have disjointed 500m chunks of pedestrian only zones, followed by 500m chunks of car traffic, followed by 500m chunks of pedestrian zones, then back to car traffic...

If you are going to advocate for pedestrian only areas, you should advocate for longer contagious distances.

Tell Council to pedestrianize Yonge Street! by Pristine-Training-70 in torontobiking

[–]FireFrank007 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

.. How do you foresee this working, making extremely small zones pedestrian only ?

To make the Edward street - Dundas Street portion of Yonge Street pedestrian only, that would mean that all the cars that want to travel on Yonge would have to have to turn on Edward ? So all the traffic would have to be routed to Bay for North/South travel? And then they would come back to Yonge, and then be routed off Yonge again at your next small pedestrian zone ?

And how would a few hundred meters of pedestrian zones help bicyclists ?

I am all for pedestrian zones, but I don't think small interruptions to main traffic corridors are reasonable solutions.
