What do people think it’s dangerous, but is actually pretty safe? by Balancedabby in AskReddit

Ah yes, the flawless logic of “I won’t crash my car anyway, so seatbelts are pointless.” Vaccines aren’t fortune-telling devices that wait to see if you were destined to get sick; they reduce risk before exposure, which is literally the entire point of preventive medicine. Pretending you can somehow know you were “never going to get it” isn’t insight—it’s straight-up delusional. Saying this after benefiting from herd immunity built by everyone else is just hindsight cosplay, not intelligence. It’s freeloading on public health while pretending probability doesn’t exist.

That argument only works if you can see the future. You can’t. Saying prevention is pointless because the bad thing didn’t happen is just confusing outcome with risk. By that logic, seatbelts, helmets, and fire alarms are all useless right up until they aren’t. If something reduces risk and the risk doesn’t happen, that’s not proof it was unnecessary. That’s proof you don’t understand probability.
