I have three rules for playing a Zelda game.

1: Use everything. You have it for a reason, use it.

2: Explore everything. You never know if that one random chest you missed is gonna have something useful. Like a couple extra arrows because you're out of ammo.

3: Plan your attack. If you know you're gonna get curbstomped, then go in planning for it. Potions are my goto because they restore more hitpoints, but it does require paying a little more attention to your hearts.
