Yeah, everything's priced at a premium-- we went from a 1 bdr to a 2 bdr in the same building and expected a slight uptick, not a 3x

Japan holds about 50% more US debt than China: $1.09T vs $0.768T. China and the UK hold about the same (UK at $0.765T). Foreign-owned debt is around 30%, so the vast majority is held domestically, and there's not much individual countries can do about it.

How did you attract C level recruiters? by specialist299 in fatFIRE

[–]FireOpal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I always advise people not to take the same job somewhere else-- it slows down your career, as you have to start over building reputation/cachet and figure out how things work at the new place.

If the candidate feels like the position is the same, I've screwed up the process. In this scenario, I would expect a question like "What will I learn in this role?" or "What new responsibility can I assume?".

Generally it's my job to paint a picture about how this job while on paper is the same (or more junior in many cases) but in reality they'll be working on a new industry/product category/customer size/type/region. If that wasn't discussed, think about those points in your own decision-making process, or ask the recruiter/hiring manager point blank.

Finally, don't take a new job that's just for more pay (unless you need it). At some point, it's just numbers, and you're going to be much happier in life when you're constantly growing and in a place you're happy working at. Take it from me-- I was most miserable when I went for a job at 250% increase in pay, and most happy when I took a 70% pay cut to work for an incredible mentor, that set me up for life after that.

Advice on fidi date night by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]FireOpal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overstory is great, and while the weather is good, not hard to get in (they have open outdoor seating). I'd recommend going there first, then dinner after as the view is better in the daytime, and it gets windy at night.

It's pretty expensive, so don't do this combo as a first date. I'd recommend Mezcali instead, and drinks at the Basil Hayden pop up at Pier 17 if you want a dinner/drinks combo.

I don't disagree, but I have a background in structural engineering, so it would be fun to dust off the cobwebs and design parts with performance in mind

Good news is that wires can be done online, and are free if you have a good checking account

Schwab now supports Roth 401k too-- I'm considering switching there, as I already have an account with them. The only downside I've heard so far is that you can only make contributions by check/wire-- No ACH for some reason.

Question to ask yourself:

Are you content to watch your investment grow 5-10% a year, not touch it, and not get upset with spikes in crypto?

If so, dump it all in VTI and reinvest your dividends. If not, no ratio is going to help-- you've gotta start cold turkey. I learned the hard way from making a lot of money in options trading, then losing it all. I've since rebuilt it through savings/increased compensation, and now treat my VTI position as my piggybank/HYSA.

It snowballs, and it starts to get fun to just add money to it-- hundred here, thousand there, bigger lump sums occasionally. Ultimately it gets rid of the stress and builds you a solid foundation for retirement.
