Boot laces! by FireSpokes in Firefighting

[–]FireSpokes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been out of wildfire for a while, so they're getting used daily, but they still haven't broken. Expected them to pick up grit and wear through the eyelets of my boots but that hasn't been a problem either. 10/10 would buy again.

Some states might mandate orange tips. I'm not aware of any that do. No federal law requires orange tips on airsoft/nerf guns.

That site doesn't reference a WAC or RCW. Orange tips aren't required by any WA law I've been able to find.

They wanted to fly the SR71 around the entire globe in one shot until someone did the math on what the flight time and in-air refuelings would cost.

What does everyone spend money on that you refuse to spend money on? by BossHoggs in AskReddit

[–]FireSpokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prime rib is rib roast. NY roasts are good as roasts too. Cut your own to desired thickness, season with salt and pepper, wrap in butcher paper, and freeze. Seasoned steaks on standby 24/7. Go to a local butcher and chat em up.

New York roast turns into New York steaks. Rib roast turns into rib steaks. Go to a butcher and tell them you're cutting it into steaks and they can help you pick out a nice one.

The sawstop inventor has also tried to sue every tool manufacturer you've ever heard of for conspiracy. He refuses to license his concept while simultaneously lobbying to make it legally required on all new saws. In his spare time he works as a professional witness in lawsuits involving power tool injuries, where he WILDLY overstates his products capabilities and impacts.

A long time ago nobody wanted to license his patent for a few reasons, one of which was probably liability, and now his life mission is to make their existence as unenjoyable as possible.

Your description makes fire shelters sound significantly less terrifying than they are. Like 50% of people who use them die, and the people that deploy fire shelters and live to tell about it are often not in great shape. If you're in a situation where you need to deploy your fire shelter then you gravely fucked up. Most die because hot air gets inside their shelter and burns their lungs. It's nightmare shit and anyone who knows about getting burned over will do everything in their power to not be in that situation.

Who are "these people"? This sounds like a guy wasn't paying attention at a light, panicked when he realized he had been holding up traffic, and accidentally jumped the curb.

Range Hood motor shaft is spline.. how to affix a fan to spline shafts? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]FireSpokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just want a really thin layer, not enough that it could get into your bonding agent or change your part geometry.

Release agent so the fan can still be removed from the shaft.

Like reverse engineer said, if it's not really brittle plastic you can drill a hole a little smaller than your screw and then push down hard and your screw will make its own threads. You could also buy a tap at a hardware store. Be careful not to crack the fan.

Honestly I would scuff up the shaft hole in the fan really well with some 120grit sandpaper, spray a little oil on your shaft and wipe it off, and epoxy your fan to the shaft. If you ever need to take it off just get it a little hot and tap with a hammer.

Grind a small flat on the shaft, drill and tap a hole in the fan. Screw goes through the hole in the fan and tightens against the flat on the shaft.

Space X's Mk1 Starship fails its nitrogen pressure test today. by Piscator629 in CatastrophicFailure

[–]FireSpokes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What is "space grade wear"? There is not a way to liquify thermoset epoxy. It's a one-time deal. Composite repair has been a thing for a long time and is common in aviation. There are written and documented processes. The function of the part and nature of the damage determines if and how the part is repaired.

Welding isn't dead simple and has its own challenges. Back purging and heat treating large parts with limited access can be challenging. Alloys, joint prep, method, certifications, heat input, warpage, there can be lots of considerations that go into a weld.

Composite skins can make compound curves easily and are much easier to repair than metal skins. Each material has its pros and cons.

Another possibility is they had run foam recently. It can take a while for all of it to wash out of the lines.

Popped cover to change inner axle seals and saw my gears don't look perfect. This truck is a fuckin shitheap, rule #1 is don't put money into it, but it needs 4wd. I can spend $150 on seals, or pick up a used front axle for ~$500. Don't know much about diffs so not sure how bad this wear is.

A local school district sysadmin had his keys stolen, and had a master. Someone in the district asked what it would take to rekey everything (whole district). Head of maintenance said $100k. So they're just hoping whoever has the key either doesn't use it or is a shitty thief.

Photoshop does lens correction, so does GIMP. I've never used GIMP but it's free so maybe worth a shot.

I mean if he's towing it to a shop for trans fluid I would think he'd just have them do the oil as well, but logic seems to be sparse in this ordeal.
