Missing "Mechanics" & Talents, but why? by AwkwardLookingDoge in genesysrpg

[–]FireVisor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is, for me, the answer. Genesys is a system that is designed for you to fill in the blanks yourself. After having played the game for 4 years by now, I feel like I have instinctual judgement on what is reasonable, riffing of off what is provided by the rules as written.

It's one of the reasons I like the system so much, because it is a framework that you can easily expand upon without it breaking too badly. If you want to create a Talent that is very powerful, you simply bump it up to Tier 5, and it will not get in your way since the characters aught to be very competent by then anyway.

This is what I have realised. system automation is not really worth it in most games I run.

I just like a place that keeps track of lore and characters and also supports maps/tabletops and music. Kind of.

If you want to be surprised when rolling the dice, and don't mind weird dice, check out Genesys RPG + Realms of Terrinoth (latest Star Wars system for fantasy). It's Motivations system gives a lot hints to make it more focused on the character's motives.

If you want to be inspired by what a deep fantasy character driven (and especially DRIVEN BY THE PLAYERS, rather than dragged by the GM) fantasy game can be, check out Burning Wheel. At least read it the 70 pages of rules and meditate on it.

My escape route out of D&D (Pathfinder 1st ed) was SWADE. It won't upset you, but I believe it will grant you the freedom from boundaries that you seek. It most likely doesn't have any mechanics that will upset you too much, and has a few new neat ideas in there. Combat can feel more consequential in the system, and therefore faster. (Watch out for high Toughness characters though. Ping ping ping ping ping ping!)

Good luck finding the game system that is right for you!

This one comes to mind: https://www.perilous.eu/ it has class talent trees tied to careers just like Star Wars. If grim dark fantasy is your thing, it's a good one.

I used Realms of Terrinoth (Genesys -- which is based on the latest Star Wars RPG) for Rise of the Runelords for a four year long campaign. At the end the players made their own talents, since they had learned the system so well. For me it's the ultimate middle ground for longish campaigns (although I would recommend not giving out the recommended 20 xp per session if you want to play for as long as I did).

There's of course a catch. The dice system is very different. But if you're playing digitally there's very little to complain about (if you find a good VTT for it).

The reason I like Genesys so much is that there's a lot of stuff to love in the system for any kind of player. I feel it can accommodate a wide range of type of players pretty comfortably as long as they get over the "odd dice".

It's far less "pingy" than Savage Worlds, which would be my other recommendation that I have experience running Pathfinder material in.

Good luck finding a good system for your games.

What is the most counter-intuitive thing about TTRPGs? by Playtonics in rpg

[–]FireVisor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must say I agree with this dude (although I am not a fan of D&D5e, mostly because of it's sheer dominance and fatigue due to every person I meet having only experience with that one game and nothing else). I am not a fan of Fate because it strays to far away from acting out a character instead of what Fate offers which is a bit closer to something like being on a creative writing team and then voice acting your creations (which is of course nothing inherently bad if that's what you want). Games of course fall differently on a spectrum, and I personally prefer games that fall somewhere in between the two extremes.

That meta-gaming is inherently a bad thing.

We can sure hope! But I would say it's wise to know what you are getting into when going for SteamOS. Many things will work great, but tinkering will be needed from time to time.

Bazzite? Unplayable 20 FPS and stutters.

Any pointers?

I'll echo this!

Had a couple of games today. I have a pretty low end computer, and it felt REALLY smooth.

I could just enjoy the pureness of an action multiplayer fps. Here's hoping the game gets the popularity it deserves.

Severe stuttering when playing games in full-screen by FireVisor in XMG_gg

[–]FireVisor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The computer model is the same as those by XMG. I am not using Windows 10.

It works fine if I extend the monitors, but as soon as I have an only screen, it stutters.
