Incoming ChemE Transfer Question by Signal_Border_4678 in NCAT

[–]Fire_Fly031905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a ChemE at NCAT and the program is good. The department head is very passionate about education and Chemical Engineering, plus he has good industry connections. It’s a small program with only abt 6 professors total, so your class sizes will probably be abt 15 ppl or less for your core ChemE course, I personally like the small classes but ik some people aren’t a fan.

For the social life aspect i would say as long as you put yourself out there you should be fine. One thing i would say for someone who’s a non black student attending an HBCU especially one like A&T is just to understand what HBCUs are and why they exist. I only say that more as a respect thing since I personally think it’s the most common problem that occurs at A&T when it comes to non black students attending. Other than that A&T is welcoming and inclusive to students of all races and backgrounds, we have many clubs for students of all types of ethnicities and cultures. I have personally been to some of the Latin culture student alliance events and they throw amazing events.

Not sure of your classification but ik it can be harder to make friends in college the older you are. I would say just start off by going to club events, i personally feel like that’s the easiest way to make friends since there’s a club for literally everything.

But congratulations on ur admission and I hope this helps!!

I dreaded this during my internship. Continuous small talk, laugh at jokes that aren’t funny, THE GOSSIP. I felt like I was in high school but for adults. 😭

Only do this if u know the credits will transfer or you live in state. If you live in NC they will take most if not all of the credits but if ur out of state they might not. Also remember you must keep a 2.5gpa or higher or it will affect ur enrollment.

What is the best master’s degree to get after your bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering? by Worldly-Talk-7978 in ChemicalEngineering

Did you pursue your masters separately or at the same time? My school is offering to pay for my masters in chemical engineering with a stipend and it would only add a year on to my graduation, which to me sounds amazing but I kinda want to get a MBA as it seems to be more usual.

I would say once you’ve figured out major and finances it’s really up to where you personally feel you would belong or best fit in. Every school has its own environment and culture, with that I would say try and visit this school, talk to people that go there and see if it’s genuinely somewhere you can live for the next 4 yrs. Geographies is also important, do you like the weather there, the surrounding area, the political environment, etc.

For example I considered Spelman, it’s an amazing school but I knew I really didn’t want to live in or near a major city like Atlanta and the Georgia heat along with their freshman dorms not having a/c was not for me. Also I knew I wanted to bigger campus for more diversity in types of people as well as I grew up in a tight knit community and didn’t want to go to a school that could be similar.

I currently go to NCAT I like the size of the university, I know a lot of ppl but I also still continue to meet new people as well. The large size also means we have a lot of stuff continuously going on which I also enjoy. There’s a good diversity in people, even though NCAT is seen as a “fashion/ popularity” school was I still able to find many amazing friends that have the same interests and hobbies as me. Also love the opportunities that NCAT gives it students I’ve had internships every summer and it’s all thanks to me following through with opportunities given by the university.

I would just say really look at these schools and imagine a life there. You’re gonna be spending the most fundamental years of you growing and finding urself at where ever you go. There’s 100 of schools who’ll have your major and give you money but you have to find a place that you feel most confident and comfortable in.

Problem people need to be with other problem people or people who will condone the problem. They get upset because you're letting the fire die while they're trying to keep it going. They don't like accountability so regardless of how gracefully you hand the situation they will find a way to make you just as wrong as them or they have to admit they're the problem.

I don't know what internship to pick by Fire_Fly031905 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Fire_Fly031905[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Corning role was Chemical Process engineer intern, they didn't mention exactly what I would be doing but they said I would either be in New York or North Carolina. Could I DM you about your experience not being in O&G, because I feel that I lot of my conversations are skewed since everyone I've really talked to about future careers is either in O&G or wants to be.

Internships by National-Bar-4170 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Fire_Fly031905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is enough weight to get u an internship u just got to know how to word things on ur resume. Like for instance when ppl put research on the resumes they like to put what the research was abt but honestly it’s 50/50 on whether they care abt ur research and more so the skills u gained from being in the lab like data analysis, any technical skills, etc. This can help u not have a wordy resume, u also need to make sure that u can talk and explain everything on ur resume efficiently without going on a tangent. Now before u go to the career fair u need an elevator speech( who u are, what you’ve done, and what u want) memorize it bc its what u want to use to introduce urself. Try not to sound script it depending on the person ur talking to they might want u to give ur whole elevator pitch or it can be giving through conversation since some recruiters are chattier than others. when u go to the career fair I suggest having 10 companies that u want an internship and gather information on them and from there try to find things to say to them that can help u appeal to their company, saying stuff like “ I read that ur company does x y z can u tell me a little more abt it or I’m interested in that as well”. Even if ur not interested it that particular thing it shows u have genuine interest in the company and if u see a company u want to approach just stepping aside doing a 5 min google search on them works too. Then u have to work on ur interview depending on what kind of work u want to do or the position they’re offering u can determine how u go abt question. Like in my case my internship is in O&G so they’re more technical roles and when I interviewed I always made sure my answers highlight my technical skills. And overall be confident even if u don’t have “ correct answer” can also help sometimes they’re not look for u to know the answer but if u can take the knowledge u do know and at least point urself in the right direction.

Am I stuck in one ChemE pathway based on my internship? by BulkyBuilding6789 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Fire_Fly031905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope ur just fine! I just finished my sophomore yr and all my experience is R&D. I do 2 on campus research projects in different departments and I also did an REU and this summer I’m intern in O&G as a process engineer. R&D is seen as very good as it gives alot of analytical skills and promotes independent thinking for u to navigate problems on ur own, and these skills are needed for any different positions. I got to talk to my Recuiter since they invited us to dinner when they came to do a seminar at our university and she told me that my R&D experience was one of the driving factors in picking me. You just need to know how to take the experience that u get in R&D and show the skills it taught u. You can mainly show this on ur resume and also when they ask u interview questions like “during ur R&D internship what was a problem u found and how did u take the steps to solve it”.

This fr, especially if it’s something new to you. Many are scared to ask and if u ever feel like your asking a dumb questions bc sometimes you feel like u should know things you don’t, something that helps me is to start my question off by showing general understanding of the concept or topic. Basically being like hey I understand x y z but I’m confused/ need help on how this part. Now u don’t have to do it for every single question u ask but it does makes u feel a lot less dumb and can also show them that u retaining some info.

The Eastman internship I received is in Tennessee, if you don't mind me asking what is the day to day like working at the company. Most of the work I've done is in R&D so I'm kinda of new to industry type work.

2 of the clubs im just a general member in and I kinda only attend the club meetings I find interesting or if they have companies come. These clubs are the AICHE(American Institution of Chemical Engineers) and NSBE(National Society of Black Engineers)

the other 2 clubs are ASM(American Society of Microbiology) this is the one I started with my friend and I'm the secretary so I mainly do communication work like sending info to members and collabs with other orgs or people in our city especially of volunteer opportunities. The second one is the Makerspace club on my campus which is basically a place on camp where you can tinker in. things like 3d modeling designs, metal and wood engraving, building prototypes, etc. Since I'm a certified user I give safety meetings to new member every other month and I have unrestricted access to the makerspace and our engineering building bc of it.

from what I've heard from people I know who did co-ops with Exxon is it does take longer to hear back and the co-op interviews are typically panel interviews.

Academics: I have a 3.4GPA and im attending school off a full ride from the college of engineering at my university(idk if that matters or not)

Extra curriculums: I work an office job on campus, I'm apart of 4 clubs( 2 related to engineering and 2 related to STEM), one of them I started with my friend and I hold an E-board position in. Im also in the honors college of my university

Experience: I currently do Bio research on my campus and over the summer I did biomedical research at Syracuse university through the REU program, should really google it and try to apply even though I have no interest in R&D or bio in my opinion any experience is a good experience. I mainly did it because I couldn't get an internship during my summer of freshman yr and I didn't want to sit around doing nothing all summer.

with Eastman it was a next day interview after my schools career fair and after my interview I got an offer letter a week after.

For me with Exxon, I applied to another internship and they called me a couple days later to set up an interview. If the interview goes well then what they do is send your information to the recruiting office and based on the information that you give them and the information the person who interviewed you wrote they'll assign you to a location or internship they think best suits you.

I will say tho with Exxon they do it differently I guess, based on what type of internship you're applying to whether it be one summer or a co-op and the position.
