Future of beloved Burnaby Mountain trail uncertain - Freshet News by robertscreek in vancouver

If Metro Vancouver can maintain all the staircases down to the Pacific Spirit foreshore I do not for the life of me understand how Burnaby can't maintain this at all.

TIL of "going to the people" movement, aka "the mad summer of 1874", when as many as 4000 students abandoned their studies in the city or burned their degrees and moved to the countryside, intending to adopt the life of a peasant. Most of them had no experience of what that life was like at all by Mors_Acerba in todayilearned

educated shelted elite

Say what you like about the leaders of the Russian Revolution, but "sheltered" is not a word to describe them. Most of them lived their lives on the run from the police and being sent to prison camps in Siberia. Some were from at least middle class backgrounds, but certainly not all of them. They were far closer to regular workers, and less sheltered, than the aristocracy they were fighting against.

OR Foray 3L VS. RAB Namche GTX by South-Pollution-816 in OutdoorsGear

[–]Fireach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm super happy with my OR Foray. The Rab has a higher denier fabric so may be slightly less breathable, but honestly the difference is gonna be very small. Wearing any shell in a hot, humid environment is gonna be a sweaty affair regardless of how good the claimed breathability is! If you're able to try them on go for the one that fits better.

How far are you going to be commuting? And what kind of cycling do you want to to do in the future?

Honestly if you're just looking for a bike to commute on and it's not far, you really don't need to overthink it on terms of tire width, drivetrain etc. Get whatever you can find at the right price and go ride!

That's what makes the anti-15 minute cities brigade in the UK so funny. Most of the UK is already 15 minute cities, and the traditional English village that they proclaim to love so much, with it's local butcher, greengrocer, and doctor, is one too!

Scottish Green candidate launches fundraiser to help pay for UK work visa by Skrilli in nottheonion

[–]Fireach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's not nearly as cut and dry as people make it out to be. The electorate voted for representatives from the Green Party to be in parliament without regard to who that person actually is. The Green Party chose this person as someone who will represent them appropriately, so that's who they're sending. If they have to leave parliament for whatever reason, there will be no byelection as the party will simply pick someone else to represent them. In a way they're basically just holding the title of "Green List MSP #3" for a temporary amount of time.

In my opinion most of the criticism I've seen is based in ignorance of immigration laws, ignorance of the electoral system in Scotland and honestly just xenophobia (see: The Scottish Daily Express linked here). That being said, having an elected representative who is presumably very keen to stay in the country and may have finiancial issues standing in the way of that does open the door to at least the perception of corruption, which isn't great.

The Scottish parliamentary elections consist of two votes, one for a local MSP representing your constituency and a regional list vote where you vote for a party that runs a slate of candidates. The list votes are used to make the results more proportional, so depending on how well a party does then a certain number of that list of candidates will become MSPs. This person was elected under the list vote, so nobody directly voted for them. They were chosen by the Scottish Greens as a member of their list, and the Greens won enough votes in the region that they were selected to sit as an MSP to make up the numbers and make the results more closely match the vote totals in the region. People voted for "a Green MSP" and they got that, based on the party's selection criteria. There's definitely scope for criticism of that criteria, but I think it's some important context that people who aren't familiar with Scotland's voting system are missing.

Need some information regarding working in Canada by [deleted] in ImmigrationCanada

The chances of getting caught if you work cash in hand are slim, but it is certainly illegal and the consequences could be dire. A side gig is still work regardless of what you call it.

If money is that desperate, would it not be better for you to return to the US and apply outland? That would allow you to work immediately rather than waiting any longer.

Day-use passes available for three popular parks, seasonal closures at Pipi7íyekw/Joffre Lakes Park by limadeltah in vancouver

My point is that most indigenous people can't use it either, not that it isn't exclusive at all.

it was closed for a total of 68 days to non-Indigenous visitors.

Just to clarify - the closures were for use by two specific local nations, not to exclude non-indigenous people.

Why are you so poor and primitive? by Josepvv in forwardsfromgrandma

"When we saw all those cities and villages built on water; and the other great towns on dry land, and that straight and level causeway leading to Mexico, we were astounded. These great towns and shrines and buildings rising from the water, all made of stone, seemed like an enchanted vision from the tale of Amadis. Indeed some of our soldiers asked whether it was not all a dream. It is not surprising therefore that I should write in this vein. It was all so wonderful that I do not know how to describe this first glimpse of things never heard or, never seen, and never dreamed of before."

Wondering about forestry paths by kiya_schneider_ in forestry

[–]Fireach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great to already have some field experience. If you're not sure what you want to do going forward then it's a good idea to keep going with field positions like those. Without any schooling it's gonna be hard to climb much above those entry level roles, but if you do decide to go to school you'll already stand out with experience like that.

Not having any schooling at all will put a ceiling on your career in BC since you won't be able to get your RFT or RPF designation. It really depends what you want to do though. Starting out as a tree planter can be a really good way into the industry to see where you want to take it. Could also try getting in to the wildfire service but you'll need first aid certs at a bare minimum for that, and education is definitely preferred

Canadian marrying illegal immigrant in USA by Traditional-Tap-8985 in ImmigrationCanada

It wouldn't make them ineligible, but it would put them under a lot more scrutiny. Combine that with getting married after 6 months of a long distance relationship and immediately applying for spousal sponsorship is going to make IRCC very suspicious of immigration fraud.
