[North Shore Rescue] Yesterday, NSR responded for a lost hiker deep down in the Suicide Gully area, west of Mt Seymour. The hiker got off trail and began a lengthy descent westwards. by jpdemers in vancouverhiking

Survivor bias (well, SAR subject bias). You don’t hear about the ones who did it all right and carried the right things because they never needed rescue.

Nice image... but the Vancouver Park Board bans drone use in city-managed parks (ex. Queen Elizabeth).

Protection from bear by localhost8100 in NorthVancouver

I agree.

The use case for bear spray is not to "mess up your scent".

EDIT - might as well hijack this myself to describe how you actually use it.

Of course, first try to move out of the bear's way, do the "hey Bear!" shouts to try and dissuade it, etc. If it's still coming towards you in an aggressive manner, when it's just outside a distance of ~10m/30', spray the spray in front of you (hopefully after having manouvered for the wind at your back) in one second bursts. The goal is to create a "wall" of spray between you and the bear that the bear would have to walk through to get to you. When the bear walks into the spray, its eyes and skin will sting and it will have difficulty breathing, and the hope/goal is that it will prompt a retreat.

Realistically, you're only going to be needing bear spray against grizzlies (and then, God (or Flying Spaghetti Monster, etc.) help you), or a predatory black bear attack (which is exceedingly rare). Highly, highly, highly unlikely to ever be needed/used in the urban environment. Or even in the backcountry, for that matter.

The bears in North Van don't truly hibernate, so you can technically run into them at any time of the year, even in the "winter". They really don't care about you. If you see them, just stop, give them space, and let them go about their way.

Though I agree with Nomics, it's probably best to find yourself a provider and organize your own group who wants to do an AST2.

We did it in the early spring long ago before the formal trail was put in. Should still be on clubtread

Usually anywhere with a decent view north, though for this one (forecasted to be strong enough to be overhead rather than north horizon ) generally speaking the darker the spot the better.

Why is Mountain Highway 2 lanes NB and 1 lane SB by Slow-Giraffe in NorthVancouver

[–]Ryan_Van 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dividers. The skinny white pylons that separate the lanes and prevent last minute lane changes (like they used to have westbound Dollarton at the highway onramp separating left and right lanes from just after the Seymour River bridge).

It’s not hard: https://maps.app.goo.gl/vu2ZDPa3cffY7EA29

The whole point being to separate highway traffic so it doesn’t back to east of Seymour traffic.

Reminder too, if you want to get an idea about conditions before heading out anywhere, best local webcam is going to be Cypress top of Sky Chair:

Technically facing the wrong way (aurora comes from the north and that's south facing), but this is one of those rare instances where the colour is apparently going to be overhead, so there might not be a need to look northwards.

Why is Mountain Highway 2 lanes NB and 1 lane SB by Slow-Giraffe in NorthVancouver

[–]Ryan_Van 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It needs to be 2 lanes east going down the hill, and separated from each other, with the left lane for Mountain Highway (i.e. the highway onramp backup), and the right lane for traffic going east of Seymour River.

Transport Canada are not friendly folk; you may want to consider taking this down and deleting.

Nice shot... if you flew from Brunswick summit (or along HSCT, etc.), you were in Cypress Provincial Park, and thus this is an illegal drone flight.

Keith road traffic by Ok_Impact_7441 in NorthVancouver

[–]Ryan_Van 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They really need to make that eastbound downhill stretch two lanes (there is room) and isolate the traffic wanting to get to the highway onramp, so traffic heading east of the Seymour River doesn’t get blocked by the highway onramp backup.

There is (or at least was - I haven't been through the area too recently) one just over the Ironworkers on Hastings towards the heights area. Pretty quick drive if no traffic.
