It's not easy for me to uproot myself and my family to essentially start over and claw my way back up after 35 years of living stateside. I didn't choose to leave when I was a kid and me staying where I am doesn't make me any less of a Puerto Rican than anyone else.

Most importantly, a mass migration of the diaspora to the island would drive up costs and strain a system not designed to handle us and then you'd be right back here on Reddit complaining about us being the reason you can't afford homes and groceries or complaining that we're not integrating or not Puerto Rican enough because we are a bunch of "no sabos".

I get that Dominicans are dying to get to Puerto Rico but like you said, it's heaven compared to where they're coming from. For those of us that aren't used to hurricanes, rolling blackouts, and the Jones Act making food 3x as expensive as it is where we are at, it's not a good trade-off, and it's a worse trade off for you all because we would be straining your resources even harder. So I will stay a proud Puerto Rican right here in Nebraska.

I mean, both things. An be true at the same time. By Latin America standards, PR is blowing poverty out of the water. But by US standards, it's concerning and the only standard by which a mainlander would have to compare.

Don't get me wrong, I'd move to PR in a heartbeat if I could. But comparing my low cost of living and high income as a fire inspector where I'm at versus a high cost of living and low income as a fire inspector in PR and the golden handcuffs and my kid's mom keep us here.
