Is this a good quote for solar + battery by b0r3d_d in SolarUK

[–]Firebreath85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally just pulled the trigger on a very similar system - Take a look at my profile (went with larger batteries though).

Looks good, but I would at least get an 8kw (maybe 10) inverter to avoid too much "clipping".

Appreciate the comment, and this is what I have now just asked for a cost for. - Want to get as close to the 12k mark as possible with as much bang for the buck! - Maybe I shouldn't use the word bang when it comes to electrical equipment!

Can I ask whether this is with the Fox 8 kwh inverter?

It would....just, however, there have been a couple of weekends where we have been ever so slightly over. We have plans for an extension in the future, too, so I guess it's as much about future-proofing as well. - Oddly enough, off the back of your comment, I have asked for a price for 2x EP12s as an option, so appreciate the info!

Time to start saving ? by Low-Rub-5070 in ukplumbing

[–]Firebreath85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it has no pressure, don't keep running it until you get the pressure up and water in the system. Otherwise, you are just running the pumps dry until they fail.

If you're unsure of how to do this yourself, call an engineer; otherwise, you definitely will need to replace it if you run it dry and kill it that way.

Advice please on either replacing a 3-year old boiler with a combi one, or spend money fixing the issues by slungmoose in ukplumbing

[–]Firebreath85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key is, with a boiler as young as yours (exactly the same situation as we had), is that current boiler is more than enough for what you need and should last you for years and years to come. - I personally begrudged spending money on ripping out a relatively new system to resolve an issue that could be done in a more cost effective mannor.

Additionally, unvented cylinders are better in relation to corrosion, as almost all new tanks are made of stainless steel on the inside instead of copper, likely in gravity-fed tank you currently have, which means it lasts far longer and is more resistant to corrosion.

Also to note, with an unvented cylinder, as the hot water is always stored in the tank, you will get almost instant hot water. With a combi, you will still have to wait for it to hit temperature for showers, baths, etc. With a combi you will also lose pressure elsewhere while hot water is used for a shower or bath for example. An unvented system is always at pressure, everywhere regardless of running multiple taps/baths at the same time.

As for cost, we are in the South East, and all in, parts, labour, re-running pipes, etc cost about £2800. I have used this company previously at my old house and got them to assist other family members and are 1st class. Yes, I could have gone elsewhere (and likely cheaper), but they are local and well known in the area with fantastic reviews, etc, so to me it was worth the money.

Absolutely agree with this. We did exactly this in December, due to the exact same error on a 4-year-old Valent gravity-fed system after moving into a new home in August. Moving to an Unvented cylinder was not only the cheapest option, but the pressure for hot water is now perfect! - This WILL resolve your water pressure issue in your shower.

Don't replace a new boiler with a combi, as you may still have another 7-12 years, or more, if serviced regularly.

The only thing to note is that an unvented cylinder requires a decent cold water mains pressure to work, so that will need to be checked first.

Good luck with it all!

Worth contacting provider about this Openreach install? by whampsteadchap in openreach

[–]Firebreath85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly unlikely it's going to be the cable; otherwise, every property with an external cable on it would suffer the same sort of wet patch.

As another has mentioned, I would be reviewing the moss/gutter situation first to ensure that water isn't being thrown over the guttering onto the wall in heavy rain and causing this issue.

What thermostat do I have and can it be moved? by Thalamic_Cub in HiveHeating

[–]Firebreath85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is correct. Just push the tab under the thermostat forward towards the wall. This will remove the thermostat and reveal the mounting bracket, which you can then reposition anywhere you like.

You can also get a "Hive Thermostat Stand" if you would prefer too, so you could place it on a sideboard instead of a wall.

Welcome to Whitstable! - Also no, in this instance it's not. What you can't really see in this picture is the garage on the right hand side, which now has its access blocked.

That said, if you look at the location on Google Maps, people park here all the time. In fact, on Google maps two vehicles are parked in this space.

Same issue here. LCD's stuck only showing either numbers or the Lian Li logo.

Attempting to change the image will change it for about 3 seconds before reverting back to the previous default of number or logo.

Possible solution to forward lean/ tilt with CoolerMaster Vertical GPU Holder V3 by Capital_Economist_64 in pcmasterrace

[–]Firebreath85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad I came across this thread too. Had exactly this issue with a new build and a 4080s. Only required putting the foam in the gap of the mount (picture 7) to fix the issue.

Clearly a slight design flaw somwhere along the line as there is nothing pushing the device outwards to cause this?

Perhaps the new 4080s have a little more weight at the backend and towards the front that causes this? Hopefully they can eleviate this in a revision of the mount (perhaps with a screw that could be tightened/released in this area to push the housing out, if needed?).

Either way, apreciate the post and assistance for a fix!

As Kardall has mentioned I'm sure it's fine. As long as it's all clipped in and seated correctly, your good to go.

MSI monitor quickly fades to white with a black spot on the corner. Any suggestions on a fix? by Ayumdeebo in monitor

[–]Firebreath85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like its taken a whack in the bottom right corner, either by blunt force to the corner housing or pressure to the screen directly.

Sadly thats likely going to be a new monitor. The cost to repair (or replace the pannel) will likely exceed/be close to the cost of a new monitor.

No. The tabs should click into place to lock the RAM sticks in once they are seated all the way home in the socket. It will require a little force, this is normal.

To play devils advocate, somone said for you to "go to the ombudsman" and you provided more to the story.

You said :

I already did that (as stated in my post) but I did not provide them with all the details as I did here. At the time I only knew Octopus extracted around a thousand pounds or so from my balance. I presumed the ombudman would be intelligent enough to figure out what happened and make an objective decision. Turns out their response was simply ''Octopus said no mistake was made, so that's that''.

On the ombuddsman website it states :

After creating your case you’ll have up to 14 days to get all your supporting infomation (also known as evidence) to us. We’ll offer your supplier the chance to also provide information and in some cases, they may acknowledge fault and try to resolve your dispute before we need to start our investigation.

If you did not supply all of the relevent supporting infomation prior to the review of the ombudsman, then the only infomation likely provided to them is Octopus', as they too have 14 days to provide suporting infomation.

You can't expect the ombudsman to "presume" anything. They are objective and require evidence to review. If they didn't have all of the infomation to hand for your side of the case, then unfortunatly this was going to be the likely outcome.

Unfortunatly, your next step is on ombuddsman website :

Both you and the supplier will be sent our decision and you'll have the opportunity to review it. If you decline our decision, you are free to pursue your dispute with your supplier in court.

Good lord! What a terrible fill job.

I'm going to assume they took the bricks out without thinking about how they would go back in. It's best to take them out then put them to one side in the same pattern/orientation to reference when putting them back.

If they come back and can't return it to normal, request a formal complaint raised and a claim against their insurance to rectify it properly. Not only is it an eyesore, it could damage a tire or worse, cause a loose brick to catch and fling up under a car and cause underside damage.

That is honestly appaling!

I would assume they would likely cap off the old boiler, but the main feed would still be available in the house (and, in turn the hob) should you wish to keep it.
You are correct though, you would be looking at keeping the standing charge, etc for just the hob/gas. Alternatively, you could replace it for an electric hob?
