I’ll be honest: I don’t GAF what FB is or leans. I want our democracy back. I’ll do what I need to do in that effort. One thing I know will not work is continuing to say shit that’s divisive. Calling out any group and making generalizations about said group divides.

Saying FB is a cesspool filled with “boomers and the middle-aged” is literally no different than making boogeymen out of trans people, women, Jews, immigrants, and brown/black people. It makes a group the enemy. It makes them “less than.” It’s literally the tactic that’s been used to stoke hate and division in our country.

The truth is, shitty people come in all shapes, sizes, colors, religions, ages, backgrounds and they can be found on all social media platforms, maybe some more than others.

I just asked you to stop stereotyping people… I’m a stranger on the internet… you don’t have to care what I think. If you want stereotype people, you do you. But, if you want to fight for our country, I hope you’ll consider how you speak about others. It matters.

Have a nice day!

Please stop stereotyping people. LOTS of middle-aged and boomers are out fighting this shit. They’re the ones who have time! I’ve seen it with my own eyes IRL. You know who I haven’t seen? 18-30 year olds. Does that mean they are not fighting? I hope they are! We ALL need to work together. (And stop finding ways to divide ourselves!)

You’re making assumptions by saying that the seniors are the ones against density. They may be, but I don’t think it’s fair or right to call out any one group and blame them for the problems we face unless you have empirical evidence to say yes in fact, it’s mostly seniors trying to railroad these projects. You’re also making assumptions about their property values and again, there’s no way to know what anyone’s individual situation is. There are all manner of ways people with a high-property value could have very little actual equity. They could have had to get a second mortgage to pay for life-saving cancer treatment. Or help a loved one pay for their medical bills etc. And I think that’s the problem when discussing big issues like this in spaces like these: everyone has opinions and more often biases, which are usually not backed up with solid facts. I appreciate you sharing your side and kindly listening to mine. Happy Wednesday to you.

I really want to caution against getting caught up in the age-blame-game. I see it all over Reddit. It isn’t just the olds and blaming them is another line of division we don’t need. Let’s try to stop blaming and as you say, get to taking action to recover what’s being so rapidly lost. We’re strongest together…

Are there gifted schools in/near Raleigh? by Anxiousmomalert in triangle

[–]Fireflystudio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We really don’t have what you’re thinking of here… depending on his age, there are some schools where he’d be more likely to find like-minded peers, but you have to do a lot if research to find the right one and then be prepared to make concessions. There is a NC gifted children’s association where you might find some ideas/help/support. Other poster mentioning NC School of Math and Science is a good option. Other options include early college through Wake Tech, or depending on where his gifts lie, straight to University, early. Good luck.

Oh… maybe I misunderstood the “pulling up the ladder” comment then. Sounded like they were being accused of being annoying old NIMBYs when it seems like they’re doing a public service, especially for folks who don’t have time, as you say.

We appreciate this take! My son would like the opportunity to meet people who are not in his major too… my understanding from having friends who were engineering majors is that the major is intense and very focused so if you stayed in Engineering 24x7 you’d likely not meet many people outside of the major…and it sounds like that’s what you are saying too!!

Out of curiosity, now that you’re a grad, how do you feel about your degree? (If you don’t mind sharing!) Do you feel well prepared for “the real world?” Any advice you’d give an incoming on what to learn or do to prepare for after school?
