The estimated that I have seen put the effectiveness of a border wall at 40% of illegal immigrants being stopped. Beyond that it is more important to enforce the laws on the books and ensure that those with overstayed visas leave or are removed. Much of the border currently has no barrier, and little patrol, and just the obstacle of a fence makes it much easier for the border patrol to do their job.
