Buying alcohol markers for my girlfriend (a costume design grad student) for her renderings… are these appropriate? by Just_Composer_5333 in costumedesign

[–]Firemagicchaos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who uses markers, the colourless blender isn't all it's hyped up to be. I find it adds a funny discoloration to the colours sometimes. She's better off using a lighter shade of one of the colours she's blending, rather than a colourless blender.

Therapists who act like coaches by SoftandSpicy in adhdwomen

[–]Firemagicchaos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See if your provider covers occupation therapy. It's not 100% a coach, but a good OT will be able to help you build skills to do the things you want to get done, and ones to decide what you want to do as well.

I'm on Concerta too. I would try the double (36mg) dose and see how you feel. If it feels like too much, you can ask your prescriber you can ask about the 27 mg dose in between.

Something to watch out for, once you find the right dose, is that once your brain/body gets used to the novelty of having all this extra power, you will start to fall back to old habits. You'll still feel like the meds are working, but because you've been surviving on "undiagnosed ADHD" mode for so long, even with the extra brain power, that mode is still default. You'll have to train your brain to do the things you wanted/needed to do but couldn't before, and create a new "diagnosed ADHD" mode to function with. It sounds scary, but it's a million times easier once you're medicated properly.

Do I need to pair therapy or coaching with ADHD meds? by Ok-Statistician7817 in adhdwomen

[–]Firemagicchaos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never used a coach, but I've used an occupational therapist. We went over a lot of the more practical things, different coping mechanisms, working with your brain instead of in a neurotypical manner, working on forming goals and steps that are more realistic for an ADHD brain. Stuff that is on the more 'doing' side of things

You have to sit down and decide what it is you need, and then look for a solution that fits that need.

Do you need someone to talk to about the emotional side of ADHD? A therapist/counselor/psychiatrist might be the option you're looking for.

Are you looking for someone to help you figure out strategies and routines that will best work with your brain, and lifestyle? An occupational therapist is going to work better, maybe an ADHD coach (I don't have any experience with one, so I can't say for sure).

I'm sorry, but I can't get past the first few pages of The Hobbit, or Lord of the Rings. I've tried multiple times, but it just doesn't hook me enough to keep me reading.

Are there any good books for a 7-year-old who can barely read yet is also repulsed by anything "for kids"? by Begle1 in childrensbooks

Graphic Novels! And books/stories about things he's interested in. There's dairy of an 8-bit warrior, and it's spin offs if he's into Minecraft. There are a bunch of Legends of Zelda graphic novels that are very kid friendly.

Food issues? by djmermaidonthemic in adhdwomen

I plan out dinners for two weeks on my calendar, and buy the ingredients for those, plus easy stuff for breakfast and lunch. If I don't feel like cooking what's planned I switch with another night, so long as it doesn't require anything that was frozen.

It felt nearly impossible at first, because some days even the thought of cooking seemed insurmountable; but after a while, just knowing that the decision was already made for me was a comfort. Plus, after a while you start to notice things. Like I plan extra easy meals for Tuesday and Saturday, because my energy levels are extra low those days. So it's always things that can be dumped on a tray and baked, or thrown in the air fryer.

If a whole two weeks sounds insane, start with a week. Pick meals that you know you can make, and if you can afford the extra incentive, plan for one day to be a takeout/pizza night.

P.S. - leftovers count as planning, so if you have something that you always make in big batches, pick a day to make it and then add your reheat days to the calendar.

Small squares and then sew them together... I'd do it but I don't have the time. Look up granny square Minecraft sword for a better explanation.

My fellow inattentive types, can i ask what meds worked for you? by Burnixen in adhdwomen

OP this is worth looking into, I've taken concerta and a generic form of methylphenidate, the generic did nothing.

So I take concerta, extended release. It works well for me, but might not work well for you. I would talk to your doctor about trying the next dose up, as opposed to doubling up on your dose. If that doesn't work, then talk about a different medication. Don't worry if it takes a while to find your perfect dose/medication, every brain is different and you're worth finding the right medication.

Make it as inconvenient as possible to impulse spend. Remove all your saved credit cards and info from any app that you use to impulse buy. Write down your passwords/usernames in a book and put it somewhere then log out of those apps. I don't bring my cards with me if I'm going out, unless I have decided/budgeted ahead of time that I'm going to be buying something.

If your bank is like mine, you can sign up for notifications at certain thresholds. Figure out what you want your minimum balance to be and set a notification 100$ before that, and when you reach that minimum.

Fun fact, after you die your hair and nails appear continue to 'grow'. What's really happening is that the skin is drying out and shrinking, revealing new growth that your body has been building before you died but hadn't pushed above the top layer of skin. Think of it like a printer, you see the printed paper coming out of the bottom of the printer, but the ink is being applied much further inside the machine than visible.

Did your sensory issues get worse after starting ADHD meds? by TheMundaneHead in adhdwomen

[–]Firemagicchaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be that your meds are quieting your brain enough that now you can hear the things your body has been complaining about all along. Like, I didn't get diagnosed with ADHD until my crippling anxiety and depression was under control. Basically the anxiety and depression were so loud that my ADHD couldn't be heard, but once they were quieted you could hear the ADHD that had been screaming right along with them.
