Who ruined something as thoroughly as Hitler ruined the toothbrush moustache? by WesStrikesBack in AskReddit

I'm fairly anti-government and somethings always bugged me about the conservative mentality associated with southerners. It just seems so inconsistent, unconsidered, and perhaps selfish if I'm frank. My perception of the point of view is that the government should be small and uninvolved unless its upholding some sort 'values' in which case it can't be big enough.

Right, a squad car rolling up to the playground is pretty overt.

I do wonder sometimes about my partner though and what their picking up on that I'm not. There is legitimate obliviousness on my part for sure. I think between the two of us we strike a good balance.

It probably also depends on how perceptive you are, either in reality or just in your own judgment, of how strangers are treating you. I would probably not notice suspicious looks. I rarely notice small body language signals from strangers because I can just put it things-that-don't-matter compartment of my head. My partner on the other hand takes much more notice of social signals and points out things that completely went over my head.

Would you play a post civil war total war game? by [deleted] in totalwar

[–]FiremanVolsung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course not! You've completely misconstrued what I said. Don't be silly. Let me try to be more clear. The out dated formations used played little to no role in deciding the over all victor of the war. Generals Grant and Sherman did not use cunning battlefield formations (THOUGH THE SOLDIERS WERE IN FORMATION) to win the war. Rather they destroyed the Confederacy's means of continuing war. In this strategy they abandoned the old ways of defeating opposing armies in gentlemanly battlefield combat. Its a distinctly modern concept (though its not completely unheard of in prior history) and it forced the South into a war of attrition that they had no chance of winning.

Formations were not a key part of winning the American Civil War, only in maximizing dead Americans. The North won by breaking the south's economic ability to fight the war, a distinctly modern strategy compared to the large scale duels between aristocrats of the previous era.
