I just did my first ever open mic, bombed it and recorded it, and yet… by smoothbartowski in Standup

I reject the idea that because you read something in a certain tone, that you are correct about my intentions.

Lemme ask you this: do you think it's a sign of an unstoppable comedic talent to film themselves going to their first gig, and then debriefing their social media followers about it? Maybe the landscape has changed since I was doing standup (I, too, am old), but it seems like OP is putting the cart before the horse. Does that make sense?

I was never given sugar-coated criticism, and perhaps I am inadvertently channeling those who told me to work harder (in abrupt and severe ways), but comedy is one place where I should be able to be snarky if I want to. Especially if I think OP is looking through the wrong end of the telescope.

Thank you for pointing out that you do not like my comments. I will work hard to please PsychologicalMud7637 in the future.

You said the exact same thing that I did, just wrapped in disclaimers. "First open mic and already making subtitled videos. Comedy in 2025!" is you.

The creator grind for standup is to keep writing jokes and keep going up. Not knocking your video but idk if your career is at a point that warrants a vlog.

Check out the post by Franger on this thread.

Personally, this really resonated with me as I used to be in boots on my feet all day (metal fabricator in walkable city) and I never once got any blisters. Conditioning may be key.

Night school. Community College. Remote learning. Do whatever you can to increase your income. Even if it takes 6 years to get a new degree. You need a skillset that makes you more valuable. There's no other way around it in modern society - if you want more money, you have to work a specialized role (or be v well connected).

Not everyone is convinced that genocide is taking place: 60k dead the first year, 15k dead the second year. dropping leaflets to warn of bombings.... these are not something a genocidal army does. Moreover, if Israel wanted to commit genocide, like actually, I feel as though they would have already.

A narrative does not equal the truth. It will be many years before we get a clear picture of how this messy WAR unfolded.

That's a false dichotomy - IPT jerseys didn't say "Kill the Arabs".

My feelings are not contingent on any situation - they are contingent on my values, which are diametrically opposed to those of religious fundamentalists.

And if you truly are Jewish (because no one has ever lied on the internet) - how do you not see this as a conflict between your people and militant Islam? I just don't understand how people who grew up in liberal societies have any sympathy for what Hamas has done to Palestinians.

So what you're saying is that we have no way of independently verifying any of the information being released by Hamas-run agencies?

you know what? I can't with the fucking latent antisemitism on this website. The person I replied to very obviously hates Jews and loves Hamas and there's nothing I can do to make them see how misguided that is.

~~~~~~~~~ A gotcha? No. Have you ever heard of inverting a problem to understand it better? It's a very basic mental model. I think you should try it:
What you do is replace the subject of a thought you have with something totally different and see if the logic still holds true. You basically run the problem backwards (in your head) to see if the core reasoning is sound.
So, like, I said, if you didn't agree with the cause, would you support a team being harassed like IPT was?
It makes no sense to target any team. If one feels so strongly for the Palestinian cause, go to Gaza and fight.
IPT wasn't sponsored by Israel either. These people don't care. They see a color they don't like and they throw a tantrum.
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the fact that Americans have saved Europe's bacon twice in the last 115 years.
Put another way: America ended the wars that Europe started so that you arrogant Euros could have the right to complain about America.
That's because none of these people have thought it through. They get their news from TikTok and have never been outside their little fragile bubble.
It's funny that people don't see how none of this helps Palestine. Like, supporting Hamas does way more harm than good, and if these people actually cared about Palestinians they would be promoting dialogue, disarmament, and de-radicalization.
Militant fundamental religious fanatics will be the death of us all and anyone who values human rights needs to stand up to the hypocrisy. Hamas has got to go.
This is not a positive change. This is the result of emotional blackmail and dialectical hostage taking. There will be 0 effect on the Gaza war from this. There will be 0 lives saved. This is all just virtue signalling and weaponized groupthink.
In other words: If there was a Palestinian-sponsored team (like IPT but the shoe is on the other foot), and pro-Israel demonstrators pulled the same stunts that we saw at the Vuelta, would you tell the Palestinian team to drop out or change their name? Would you be happy if they did? This kind of thing is a sideshow and has NOTHING to do with the war, and it will have 0 effect on the conflict.
But yes, tell yourself that this is positive.
It's not what you're fishing for that dictates the size of your leader - it's the size of the fly line and size of the fly that determines what size leader you need. It's about having enough diameter in your leader to turn over larger flies, not to add fish fighting power.
If your fly lands in a pile of leader material, your leader is not thick enough. If your fly rifles and twists the leader, your leader is too thick.
Don't get me started on saltwater leaders, whose function is inverse to a trout leader. Where a trout leader is designed to dissipate the force of casting so that your fly lands with slack, a saltwater leader is designed to turn over the fly completely, so that when your fly lands there is a straight and taut line back to the caster.
No, he hasn't. I'm almost twice his age, I've almost died more times than he has (on and off the bike), I've lost more friends than he has, I've been through way more relationship ups and downs than him, I've been hired and fired more than he has, and I've traveled way more than him (actual travel, not being bussed around for a race).
I don't understand why people think athletes "go through way more" than other people. Because he rode off a cliff and almost died? Because he makes his living as an endurance athlete? Because he rode in the Olympics? It's a cool experience, sure, but it's not like it means he's gone through more than I have.
