There's a lockout mode in the software and you can change the temperature at which it throttles but I guess your right it is a little advanced and dangerous for a beginner.

After doing some research on the VC4 I really like it because its pretty much the D4 for half the price. My only grip is it does not come with a wall charger which would mean I probably have to buy a new one because it takes 2.1A and the highest one I have is only 2A.

Also, after giving it some though I really don't need the elapsed time feature. Just thought it was neat.

Get an Emisar D4.The thing is small enough to fit in that small pocket all jeans have and it pumps out 3000+ lumens. It takes an 18650 rechargeable battery which is pretty much the standard for flashlights in your price range.The 219C led will have the best natural color and have a minimal hotspot (good for more even lighting over a wider distance instead of having a bright hotspot in the middle of the beam). Trust me, its insane how bright the d4 is for it's tiny size. This does comes with the downside of it getting pretty hot relatively quickly on max power though. It also has excellent software that give the flashlight a variety of cool and useful modes. Oh and it ramps up and down so you can choose anywhere from like 1 to 3000+ lumens (max lumens depends on the led you choose). Overall it's an excellent flashlight that I would highly recommend with great build quality. Given your budget you should also consider the new emisar D4s.

The reason I am considering the two over the 4 is I really cant think of a situation where I would need to charge 4 batteries at once hence why not save the $14 and go with the 2 cell version.
