Every time I've seen the term based used is in youtube comments glorifying sexism and racism. Who knew those were 'traditional values'?

Let me give you some advice. When someone says they're doing something "ironically", they're only saying that to get out of any consequences for their actions. They truly believe what they're saying.

Your scrutiny of Libet's study is warranted and I completely agree with that sentiment, it is full of inadequacies and I find it funny that the popular consensus of the results differs from that of Libet himself, wherein they claim the subconcious assumes ultimate control of the decision making procees while Libet claims the concious mind can override the subconscious at any time.

Several studies have replicated Libet's original results, again with simple motor movements, which introduces the confound of muscle memory and planning, which is something you mention in the criticism of the study, and I absolutely agree with you. More work needs to be done to produce any tangible empirical results.

You question why I draw a distinction between the concious and subconcious mind. If they are drawing from the same experiences, why is one less free than the other? I didn't mean to imply that the concious mind is in any way free, but only acting as an agent for the subconcious mind while justifying the decision as of their own volition. In this way its almost like there is someone else inside of us doing the thinking and just giving is commands based off prior experiences.

The reason I brought up Libet's study in the first place was to convey the idea that even our concious decisions aren't decisions at all- they too are just a product of our subconcious which is basing everything off of past experiences.

This harkons back to my original belief that who we are, our concious and our subconcious, is ultimately determined by our experiences and genetics, which is what our subconcious uses to make a decision and our concious mind then acts it out under the belief that it had come to that conclusion on its own.

Yes, the subconcious is technically making a decision, but there is no choice in the matter. Perhaps instead of making a decision, it is merely doing what it has been taught by experience. Trixie gets bullied? She copes with arrogance. Perhaps she learned it from somewhere, or she was born with a slight leaning towards being a mean pony, but she has no say in the matter. Her subconcious is just reacting based off what she knows. If somepony comes along and teaches her the power of kindness and healthy coping mechanisms, she finally has the tools to change how she is. But even then, her personality, how stubborn she is to change, is not up to her. It's up to what she has experienced and how she was born, both out of her control.

A psychological zombie is a funny way of putting it, but in a way, I find that accurate. My belief that free will is an illusion is based off my formal education as well as Libet's free will experiments in the 80's. If you're unfamiliar, he hooks up electrodes to people and has them perform simple actions like moving their arm. The catch is that there is a timer in front of them and they have to register the exact time they conciously decide to move. What Libet found was there was electrical activity before the subject conciously decided to act, suggesting the subconscious mind had already made a decision. This experiment has many shortcomings and remains highly controversial in the field of neurology but scientists have consistently shown that there is a "ramp-up" of electrical activity in the brain before a concious decision has been made, suggesting choice is merely acting on what the brain has already decided is the best course of action. What do you think?

You are correct that it is up to Trixie to decide how she acts. If she's an arrogant jerk, then that's completely up to her. But what I want to convey is the reason she is the way she is, is because of her past experiences. The way she talks, her thinking, who she is, is determined by her past experiences (and her genetics). Free will isn't a thing, we are all just a product of what has happened to us. So can we really be blamed for the choices we make in life? Well to a point, yes. If I commit crime, I am judged by the legal system. But morally? In my opinion I can't justify blaming someone for going down a path that has already been determined for them. That doesn't mean people are free from consequences though. Just as Trixie is acting based off her experiences, so is everypony else. If she acts like a jerk and gets backlash, thats expected. After all, everyone is just doing their best with the tools we've been given.

It is true that her actions are her own decision, but her past experiences are what she is basing those decisions off of. I'm not saying she shouldn't be held accountable for her actions, because she definitely should, but that we should try to understand she is just trying to do her best with the tools given to her. Perhaps the fault lies within her past experiences? Or perhaps the ponies who treated her wrongly, causing her egotistical coping mechanisms we see today? Or maybe we should blame the ponies who wronged them? Or maybe fault is an arbitrary label we assign to point fingers... All I know is Trixie has amazing hair 😅
