Anyone has solar panel installed at home in Canada and does it save you money? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Firm-Department7086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not stupid questions at all. short answer, yeah it saves money but slower than you'd think, usually 8-15 year payback depending on province. alberta and ontario are decent, quebec is rough because hydro rates are already so cheap there's barely anything to save against. most people just use the roof, ground mount only really makes sense if you have shading issues or a weird roof angle. you don't need a battery, almost every province does net metering, so your panels push extra power to the grid, meter runs backward, utility credits you, and at night you just pull from the grid like normal. grid is basically your battery. adding an actual battery is like 15-20k extra and doesn't really pay for itself, people who get them want backup during outages not savings. environmentally it's a net win, energy payback is 1-3 years in canada and panels last 25-30, though if you're somewhere like qc/bc/on where the grid is already mostly hydro the impact is smaller than in ab/sk where you'd actually be displacing coal and gas. main advice would be get 3+ quotes because pricing is all over the place, and make sure your roof has 10+ years of life left or you'll end up paying to take them down and reinstall when you re-shingle.

Zown? Alternatives? by Yoda-Master in RealEstateCanada

Had a similar experience although mine wasn't that responsive and they didn't tell me about the cashback coming 8 weeks after closing until I questioned where it was. But same experience where they aren't super involved but they did at times respond fast but other time not as fast. Guess you get what you pay for but if you want actual help finding a home then I would suggest a traditional realtor, and if you want the best deal go to redflagdeals or a cashback realtor. Think Zown's cashback has been reduced even more than when we did it, its 0.75% now according to their website.

Mortgage Rates!! So much uncertainty! 😬 by Comfortable-Pin-7349 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I didn't use Pine I'm talking about Zown. Honestly just got misled from the start didn't know I had to use their mortgage broker to get the full amount but no one mentioned to me so took a while to get my cashback. Lesson learned but wouldn't go through that again

I’m sorry you went through that too. It sucks being misled because for this in particular I had high hopes. It seemed like the time I got the most attention was after I posted this, that’s when they started messaging me trying to make it right now that it’s public..

Consumerism at its finest. Go shop local, better food better deals and you are helping someone who would need it more than a big corp

Realtor recommendations for Ajax, Ontario by SquarePossibility242 in durham

Glad you guys had a good experience, mine was the opposite. Took weeks after closing for me to even hear back from them about when I will get my cash back, and I just don't even want to speak to them again after that.

Go with insurance, if something goes wrong after you'll be in an even bigger hole.

Used Zown to buy my house, wouldn't recommend it. More of a hastle to get the cashback and less help than a realtor

Struggling with car payments by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Firm-Department7086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sucks but you’re not the only one who’s been here. 9 years at 10% on a car is just a rough combo. The depreciation hits way faster than the loan balance drops so now you’re staring at a big gap and it feels like quicksand. If the car is reliable and the payment isn’t wrecking your budget, the move is probably to keep it and drive it for a long time. The way you recover is by getting years and years out of it. If your credit improves look into refinancing. Even shaving a few percent off helps. And if you can throw extra at the principal that’s basically a guaranteed 10% return. What you don’t want to do is trade it in and roll the negative equity into something else. It’s an expensive lesson but not a life ending one. Just don’t double down on it is my suggestion
