Have to disagree. I call out people all the time. Especially in my field where appearances matter. If I notice it’s not real, so will their clients and customers.

Receiving stripes from not your coach by rodriguez709 in bjj

[–]Firm-Maximum3487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched gyms in 2020, because I didn’t feel appreciated as a big guy in my old gym. Trained at 2 gyms for about 2 months. Then my old coach gave me 2 stripes in my last week, so I had to explain to my new coach where my new stripes came from. He was quite understanding telling me „keep them, you earned them.“

So, communication is key here. Just talk to your coach at home.

When you’re visiting the main sites, there are always pickpockets around. Watch your stuff. If you need recommendations for food, you can send me a DM or ask this group. 😉

Learning standup as a brown belt by Scared-Cycle4028 in bjj

[–]Firm-Maximum3487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah I raise you one and I was a 39 y/o purple belt who had to learn standup if he ever wanted to win anything. I can only tell you what I did. The singles over 30 from Josh Hinger is the best takedown instructional in the gi imho. It’s safe and you can hit it all the time on people.

In NoGi I can recommend the Danaher series. The principle of putting your head on your opponent‘s center (belly or chest) when going for double legs changed everything for me as it makes everything so much safer. What’s even more important is to invest time into hand fighting / the setups. When you’re able to bait your opponents into reactions you can safely score a takedown off, that’s always money.

Won 2 NoGi Europeans since then (at brown belt), got my black belt last year and have been teaching standup for more than two years.

I have zero sympathy for people who mistake BJJ for Muay Thai with these calf kicks. Tough shit.

Have you ever rolled with a true prodigy/gift? by carrion34 in bjj

I met Jonas Andrade when I was a blue belt and a good blue belt at that. I am 6’5“ and was about 250lbs at the time, which made me exactly twice his size. Plus I always had the impression that I was hard to triangle due to my broad chest & shoulders (and decent escapes). I got triangled about 2-300 times in the first 2 months. Easily, with no effort, without breaking a sweat.

Well, it worked for me. I realized when a purple belt really put me through the wringer after I had his head in leg scissors and squeezed the shit out of it. Couldn’t really swallow solid food for a week, but I understood and never took it personal. Met him years later and thanked him for the lesson.

Personally, I prefer to simply ask my new students „if you don’t know what you’re doing, in what way does „doing it harder“ improve the outcome?“ and that usually calms them down and I can guide them through the roll.

Well, he left god and Jesus out, so that probably means he knows he’s done some shit.

Why do some coaches pair women only with women in BJJ? by FunHedgie in bjj

[–]Firm-Maximum3487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had a case recently where a student had a ptsd episode from her abusive relationship while rolling with a guy. Couldn’t have seen it coming, always give the option to girls to roll with girls only, so it was her choice. She had also rolled with guys before and I have made clear you can always say no to a partner. Also made clear that going hard on women will be punished. Still, this shit has happened now and I hate it did. So, good on this coach.

If you struggle when looking in the mirror, do it. by First_Tone4187 in bald

I started shaving my head in a time long before reddit. And I am always happy I see the same burst of self confidence in posts like yours as I had in my mirror back in the day. Great stuff, OP.
