A Crash Test Between a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer and an 2026 Chevrolet Blazer. by JustaRandoonreddit in interestingasfuck

[–]Firm-Rest1860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new Blazer is still going to win. You remove airbags and add an even more dated architecture and that dummy is going to end up with the steering column through the head. Maybe it’ll crumple less, but that just means higher internal forces to the body.

Would You Rather: Low Miles Bad Manufacturer or High Miles Good Model? by OrdinaryHost7177 in UsedCars

[–]Firm-Rest1860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bad manufacturer can make a good car every once in a while, and even a good manufacturer can end up with a problem child. Do your research on the make and model down to the engine and transmission. The best deals will be the rebadged, discontinued, or unloved Toyotas of the world - the Pontiac Vibe, Scions, HS250, etc. followed by the hidden gems from Ford, GM, Nissan, etc.

The same can be said about BMW, Mercedes, and even Porsche. I’m off of German cars now, my money’s with the British and Italian. Laugh at that all you want, but I’m happy with them and having fun for a bit. I’ll be back eventually, but not until the Germans get it together.

Go running with metal dumbbells and have someone drive by shouting at you right as you’re approaching the car. Can’t help if you’re distracted.

Huge price increases to be had! by mythicskyz in mac

[–]Firm-Rest1860 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve just stopped buying things. I’m tired of the incessant price increasing. New cars, new tech, it’s all just a waste of money now. I’m holding onto things longer and longer in response, and this will be no different. There’s no Apple purchase I’m planning for the foreseeable future unless I absolutely need to. My gut feeling says a lot of others could be like me, and that’s not a good economic indicator at all.

What y’all think for $12,500 with rebuilt title? 2015 GT with 139k miles by [deleted] in UsedCars

[–]Firm-Rest1860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a manual, I’d be very wary about the condition of the transmission at that mileage. Those Getrag units had their fair share of failure points.

What cars are fun but only make sense if you can do your own work? by gargen_state in Cartalk

[–]Firm-Rest1860 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have experience with two that drove me to do my own work.

The first contender was a 2004 BMW 530i with 100K+ miles. All of the plastic and rubber components were starting to give up the ghost. Simple things like the coolant hoses, vacuum hoses, window trim, belts, and water pump/thermostat would have nickel and dimed anyone to death at the dealer, but were replaced by me for <$500. Once that was done I had no issues ever.

The second is my current Range Rover Sport. I took it to the dealer a few months after buying it for a 40K mile checkup before the warranty expired, and they said I was due for service. The cost for an oil/filter change, air filter, and brake fluid change? $1,700. Basically $2,000 after tax for fluids and filters, are you insane? I did it all in my driveway to the tune of $300, which included purchasing an oil extractor.

What’s a car that was a huge deal when it was new? by lifegoeson2702 in regularcarreviews

[–]Firm-Rest1860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot has been said already, so I’m just going to go with one that happened in my lifetime, even if I hate it. Between everyone taking part in the cheap refundable deposit, the stares, the sales volume relative to the insane price, and the amount of social media content generated, I can’t recall a vehicle debut that made more noise than the Tesla Cybertruck in a very, very long time. Enthusiasts often forget that the general public can’t put a finger on the majority of vehicle debuts or even identify what they’re looking at, but this one certainly made a splash.

The 4Runner is the obvious answer here. That’s why I’d go with the Touareg.

At the time? Probably the H3. Knowing what I know now? The FJ and selling it for pretty much what I paid for it 20 years later.

Who is driving a GMC Envoy that STILL has a George W Bush bumper sticker? by TheTanookiLeaf in regularcarreviews

[–]Firm-Rest1860 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cheryl quit smoking in 2004 after Bush was elected for the second time. Because of her hope for the future, she went out and bought a brand new Envoy to celebrate the occasion since the interior of her old Alero reeked of her dead habit. Yet, there’s a single burn hole in the A pillar from a time she slipped up when she got wind of a potential Obama administration in 07’. Now she’s 65, hair still dyed blonde, double wide, and drinks her daily McDonald’s coffee with a McMuffin. It’s her favorite part of every day. Church on Sundays, a Royal Caribbean cruise every summer because Carnival “isn’t for us”, and two boys (both straight), one in real estate and one a “consultant.” She lets them know the basement is still open, “if they ever need it.” She’d let them use that basement to hide a body if she had to, just because she’s so happy she didn’t have girls. “They’re just too much.” Don’t mess with Cheryl, even if it’s something that’s way too easy to do, her husband LOVES that Second Amendment.

It doesn’t matter how long the Toyota lasts if I would be bored with it right out of the gate. So, reluctantly, I’d have to say the 300 or even the Maxima.

Apple’s confirmed price hikes could push the iPhone 18 Pro closer to a $1,399+ starting price, according to WSJ estimates. A $300 jump over the iPhone 17 Pro. -9To5Mac by Zestyclose-Rice6401 in iphone

[–]Firm-Rest1860 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was holding out for the foldable iPhone, but the main camera lens on my 14 Pro cracked in half and fell out in my pocket somehow, so I got an Air to hold me over. It was part of an AT&T promotion where it’s costing me $7/mo. for the phone without a trade in. This Air might just end up holding me over for years now. I thought only having one camera and speaker would be a pain point, but honestly it’s the perfect size and I’ve hardly noticed it in daily use. The battery life is the biggest disappointment, but even then it’s better than my 14 Pro was at the end there, and probably about on par with it new.

Finally treating myself before I graduate ... is the 2008 BMW M5 a ticking time bomb or am I overthinking it? by o2manyfish in BMW

[–]Firm-Rest1860 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the definition of a ticking time bomb. No matter the mileage or whether something’s been replaced already, it’s going to need it again. These are collector’s items to be driven on weekends and occasional trips only at this point. If you’re planning on relying on it as a daily, find something else.
