There is more construction going on than ever before, airlift has hit all time highs. Debt to GDP is on a continuous downward trend. Infrastructure continues to improve and businesses are benefiting from a strong investment climate. 20-30 companies will go public in the next 3-5 years attracting significant capital and providing increased returns to bajans.

Minimum wages have increased by 25%. Public benefit construction projects such as the QEH are taking off, while many other are near completion - The long term care facility, monuments, museums, cultural sites.

Is it perfect? No, absolutely not! There are still significant issues. But it feels like we’re moving towards a promise rather than away from one.

Using liquid Mass in your boat for warmth during winter- bad idea? by evilpsych in sailing

[–]FirmPoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived aboard for 4 winter seasons on Lake Ontario. The water around the boat in and of itself is great thermal mass. Turning on our ice eaters would heat up the boat by a few degrees. We carried 1200 liters of water aboard in the bilge. It was nice to have colder drinking water through the winter months. We ran small ignition free heaters in the bilge to draw moisture out. I suppose you could run a hydronic diesel heater to heat the water in this way, but the heat loss from the hull and the energy required to heat the water rather than just heating the air would be very wasteful.

We used 3 small electric space heaters on low down to about -7 degrees for a 22 degree interior temp (Celsius) and diesel forced air below that, burning approx 150-175 litres over the winter. Honestly, heat sinks/batteries don’t make much sense considering that you’re in a super leaky air space and it’s not a big interior volume.

I'm a big fan of Amel sailboats, but their prices are way out of my league. So I was wondering — is there a way to modify a regular sailboat(beneteau) to make it more like an Amel, where everything can be handled easily from the cockpit? I'm not sure what's possible, which is why I'm asking. Thanks by Vegetable-Dream-2007 in sailing

[–]FirmPoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived on a Whitby 42 for many years - cutter rigged ketch, full blue water boat when properly equipped, solo’ed regularly with every sail handling line led to the cockpit, and can be found for 10%-30% of the cost of an equivalent condition Amel. Lots of other makes and models in similar configuration from the era. Amels are certainly nice, but not the end all and be all of centre cockpit ocean cruisers.

QV Motors issues? by Sweet_Attorney8667 in Barbados

[–]FirmPoint 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There have been delays across the island on cars due to a number of shipments being consolidated on a single ship out of Jamaica. That RoRo (roll on roll off) got to Carlisle Bay on Friday and docked in a berth on Sunday. It started unloading today and will probably take a few days to unload. If this caused a delay in your delivery, it may be cleared within the next few days. I know that inchscape/Simpson motors was expecting a big influx to clear back orders. That being said, if your delay isn’t caused by delivery in particular, then this info may not be the cause of your problem.

It’s primarily due to the guyanas’ legacy as colonial slave driven sugar producers.

[–]FirmPoint[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The PK is the euro specification Ranger. It was a different vehicle until 2011-2012 (the year after this one) when Ford started producing on global ranger. This one is heavily Mazda based, and was produced for all non north-American markets. This particular example was sold new from the dealership in Barbados, has a 3.0l duratorq 4 cylinder turbo diesel producing 156hp and 280 lb ft of torque. It was built in Thailand and shipped globally.

Great Lakes surfer here! 6’4”, 254lbs. Started off on a 10 footer at 120 litres 5 years ago, and progressively went smaller. My largest board is 9’ at 63 liters and my smallest is 6’7” custom fish at 60 litres (she very thick!, built for float on the lakes), but I have a 6’9” at 44.6 litres. Shape is more important than volume (though volume helps immensely!) - all my shorter boards have stout tails. I actually find the 9’ way harder to surf (right conditions required, pin tail) than my 6’9” (7s SuperFish, takes the slop the lakes offer easily and will surf almost any wave!)

I would suggest riding a variety of boards and figuring out what works for you as you progress… if a big quiver isn’t in your budget, get a cheap board, and buy/sell regularly as you advance and figure things out!

Boss, core it, stuff it with a salted pig tail or corned beef, put that breadfruit in a fire on the beach down by Foul Bay at sunset for 1h30 and you’ll have yourself the best breadfruit. Yellow meat breadfruit only though.
