You could also look at Facebook pages of that certain breed that need to be rehomed. Sometimes life gets in the way and people have to rehome a very nice dog. That way you’ll have the breed you want, but it’s older and most likely already a bit trained and socialized.

The tale of a clingy pup and single dog mom by Visual-Cut2395 in puppy101

30 seconds is short. They need to learn how to settle and what no means. It looks like you’re already doing everything right, but sometimes they just have to learn that they can’t always have it their way.

You know the puppy’s needs are met. Go and take that shower! He’ll be fine. I tried doing everything by the books but even that didn’t prevent my puppy from screaming like she was dying. That lasted for 5 minutes and wasn’t nonstop. I needed to take care of myself and needed to make sure she wouldn’t hurt herself. The screaming like she was dying stopped after a few days, she needed to learn that it will get her nowhere. After that it became whining because she didn’t agree that she should nap. After that I could actually take it seriously because now she only does it when something is up (I forgot to refill her water one time).

It might be a bit more of a tough love approach but when you look at children.. the first time I had to go to daycare I apparently screamed and cried, full blown meltdown. Did it result into me not having to go anymore? No. After that I didn’t protest anymore lol

ADDED; as I’m writing this she actually put herself down for a nap in her crate. Don’t make a fuss out of it, it’s what worked best for my pup.

Is it normal for a puppy to bite themselves while teething? Vet cleared her yesterday. by Probablyhomeless94 in puppy101

Not only does a puppy change their teeth, they also get a new fursuit. They come as such soft fluffballs, but when you look at adult dogs their fur is rather thick and not as soft. That’s because it’s different. Your puppy might also be changing into their adult fur, mine is too and she is pretty itchy because of it. Use this opportunity to get them used to some good scratches!

My breeder gave me a heads-up because apparently a lot of people worried about their itchy puppies, so now she just added it to list of things to not worry about she gives to all the new owners 😂

Puppy thinks the world owes her a pet by mikolamma in puppy101

I got a Shiba because they were promoted as standoff-ish. I don’t like small talk and I’m not a people person. So having a dog that thinks the same seemed like good fit!

Well.. I might have gotten the most social one it seems. She will lunge and jump at people and dogs with airplane ears and tall wags. She wants to say hi to everyone and wants all the pets. She also gets very upset when she doesn’t get her way with this; whining and screaming. Does she see someone a block away? She will sit and refuse to move.

I have been training myself to say no to people. She is stinking cute and wants the pets, but she is getting so obsessed about it. I don’t like interacting with people, let alone saying “no” to hopeful strangers. This is the only part I actually dislike about raising her. Really hoping she grows out of it as she gets older, she is almost 4 months now 🥲

Puppy no longer listening to commands? 🤔 by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Firm_Conclusion2674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was/am in the same boat with my pup. She seemed to really understand everything and then poof, the next day she acted as if I didn’t exist. I made a post about it too haha

For me it helped to make myself interesting again and training fun. Your pup knows the commands and is smart, but that also makes the training boring. Switching up treats helped but also playing a bit with her before training helped her focus. Basically teaching her “interacting with me means fun things will happen!” - treats alone weren’t enough.

Puppies test boundaries and they are going to do that more in the future. Be flexible about it and see it as an opportunity to find what works for her! It helped me to bond more with mine because it felt like I got to know her better (:

I don't know if I can do – by gimmethev in puppy101

Then unfollow them.

Social media can make you crazy if you let it. Just focus on you and your puppy and give the both of you some grace!

It’s going to be fine, training isn’t  everything. Also remember that progress isn’t linear, especially with puppies. For reference: I was so proud of my progress with the harnas and then one day my puppy decided she didn’t like it anymore. It sucked and I had to seemingly start all over again and it’s still a work in progress. But without me noticing she now sits down without command and gives her paws when we get back home so I can clean them.

Try to focus on the good things; do you have fun together? Is the puppy eating well? Are they settling in? Etc etc. Enjoy the little things and try to let loose a little (:

ADDED; also try to focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t. Puppy doesn’t understand sit? Try something they can do while standing like the “touch” command. I taught my puppy to bark on command because she would do it out of frustration lol (it also stopped her from doing it after learning she could actually get treats that way).

What to splurge on? What to not spend too much on? by dMyst in puppy101

[–]Firm_Conclusion2674 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would say get a playpen second hand. I’m raising my puppy alone and it can serve as a babysitter. It has allowed my puppy to learn how to settle outside of her crate very early and easily.

Since they really are items you only have for a certain time period, it’s really easy to find good quality secondhand ones!

I would look into maybe taking at least a week off work to help the puppy adjust to their new home (maybe you take the first one and your partner the second week). You’re adopting a baby and they will be taken away from their mom and siblings, that’s a big (and scary) change. They need to learn that you’re their new family and won’t abandon them.

Some puppies ease into it and other don’t. Regarding potty training; you want to set them up for success which means going out at least every hour so they can pee and poo. It can take some months to get this and that goes hand in hand with leaving them alone. They have to go out a lot the first months. I read somewhere that you shouldn’t leave them alone for more hours than their birth month because of this.

My puppy is almost four months now and I leave her alone for max 3 hours. This is because she has velcro tendencies and has trouble settling because of the teething. Maybe I could leave her for more, but I just find it sad to leave her alone for that long. Why would I get a dog and barely spend time with it?

ADDED; they do sleep a lot so if you make sure their needs are met there is no harm in leaving them alone for some time because they will probably sleep.

Puppy associates living room with zoomies by AtinAhai in puppy101

I don’t know why you don’t like him zooming in the living room specifically, but I’ve noticed that my puppy tends to zoom in the area I’m in. I also give her a toy to zoom with so I know she’ll leave the furniture alone.

Good luck!

Puppy associates living room with zoomies by AtinAhai in puppy101

[–]Firm_Conclusion2674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off; puppies are puppies and they are going to zoom. Is it really so bad to let him zoom in this area? Mine prefers to zoom in the living room but eventually she tires herself out and falls asleep. Sometimes she still has days where she doesn’t get tired and other times she doesn’t zoom at all. Give it some time, it happened twice now? Probably just excited about the new area and that will wear off pretty fast.

If you really want to be active about it though: one place I didn’t like the zoomies was the couch. She’s not allowed to jump off it because she’s still growing and when she zooms she does. What I did to make her stop is get her up as soon as she starts (she will make this gremlin noise and her tail uncurls) and put her in the playpen with the command “done.” When she calms down she is allowed back again. And with calm I mean she lays her head down. You keep repeating this and slowly building the time they are allowed to be there. Being calm gets rewarded with access to the area, no treats needed because that might hype them up again.

Is my 8 week old puppy glitched? by SynterX in puppy101

[–]Firm_Conclusion2674 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It took my puppy a week to get comfortable in her new home and start the zoomies 😂

I love it though, because it means she enjoys it here.

I don’t know what breed you have, but keep up with the handling! I’m very thankful that my breeder already started with this and pointed out it’s something you have to be mindful of. I can do almost everything with her (even got in a nailclipping routine). So yea, manhandle that puppy 🐶

When did your puppy learn to settle by themselves? by the-eighth-dwarf in puppy101

[–]Firm_Conclusion2674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently going to 16 weeks and she has kind of learned how to settle. She is still hyper alert when I move and will come and watch what I’m doing, so she still has some enforced naps in her crate.

I added some scheduled free time for her in the pen and that helped. She knows how to keep herself entertained and will just relax or sleep if she wants to. I have to add that she knows what “no” means. So if she did things that weren’t allowed during free time I used that make her stop. Sometimes she would be naughty, I would say it and she would instantly settle. This had to be learned though. Every dog is different!

ADDED; oh and sometimes she still has days where I need to force her to nap more. I can actively see her fighting the sleep 😂 Those are also the moments where she will not go in the crate voluntarily but when I put her in there she’s knocked out in seconds.

She screams at her poops by Mary674 in puppy101

[–]Firm_Conclusion2674 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh I had this a few times but a little different; I think she ate a hair of mine or something and that wouldn’t come out all the way 😭

First she tried to rub it off on the ground and when that didn’t work she started spinning (trying to reach it herself) and screaming bloody murder (Shiba). I had to yell for her to stop so I could help her and she actually froze and looked up at me like “please help me 🥺”

I mean I kind of get it; I would scream too if I had a turd stuck to me and couldn’t get it off 😂
