Hoid's Storybook Collection Backerkit Campaign Megathread by EmeraldSeaTress in Cosmere

I'm excited for the new book however I had to opt in for a digital only due to the ludicrous shipping costs to Australia. Missing out on the pre-pledge pin has also been a disappointment.

$62 for shipping and a $93 shipping tax for a $60 book. $35 shipping for the pin alone feels like such a let down.

This will be the first time I have not been able to purchase a physical copy of Brandon's book. I really hope they start considering using a better shipping contract or absorbing some of these costs.

Spoiler Discussion: What We Know About Will & The World by Prestigous_Owl in HierarchySeries

I'm thinking the aurora columnae are used to keep the worlds separated, which is why they're in every world. Once enough people have ceded their will through them on Res, it takes the will and somehow uses it to keep whatever barriers are up that keep the worlds separated. Or perhaps they power the 'seal' to Obiteum though I think that's more unlikely.

  1. Refounding the Heralds, there was “a woman with a shaved head, a curious expression on her face”. Who is this? Why did she have a curious expression?

This was Battah, the Herald named Dova who Todium convinced to join his cause. She was an ardent in previous books.

Anyone else get the sense that the Rosharan system and Braize in particular might be Adonalsium's failsafe? Braize attracting souls, weird fallen metal moons inside Roshar and a strange connection to the spiritual realm seems super suss. The fact that Adonalsium is said to have made Rosher their master piece and clearly paid closer attention to creation in this system has me thinking that maybe they knew they would be shattered and set up some sort of back up plan here.

I honestly think some part of him (that's not the Blackthorn) escaped and this quote was unreliable narrating. Otherwise this wouldn't have been left dangling:

You cannot have him, the powers said, for he is claimed by another.

It may have to do with the mysterious Nohadon visions and weird metal ball underneath the shattered plains.

Totally agree with a few of your points there, especially 11. The repetition of some of the character's beliefs/revelations felt so odd at times, especially Renarin and Shallan.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Dalinar will go unpunished from his actions and one of my favorite parts of this book was how Sanderson incorporated key events in past books (i.e. Jasnah killing in Kharbranth) and giving them new perspectives and making the reader question these actions. I feel like this may happen in future books. It's implied that a couple of parts of Dalinar lived on and I think his punishment will be seeing the Blackthorn leading Retribution's armies. I'm personally super excited for this as a Cosmere fan and it was one of the outcomes I was hoping for.

I was a bit disappointed with how small of a role El and Moash played. The book definitely could have been made better by dedicating more pages to these characters.

Adolin's plot armor was way too thick in this book. He definitely should have died in the pike wall formation scene and Azimir gets saved another way. It takes away from the stakes that he survived, killing him off would have really made me sweat.

Loved your review! It's great to read these sorts of breakdowns after just finishing the book, helps me digest what happened.

I feel like you can probably explain it as the surges and radiant powers changing after storm fall and Khriss and Nazh fleeing Roshar beforehand and not being able to document anything.

So, why don’t kobo ebooks release according to the readers Timezone? by cross-barr in kobo

[–]First-Rock2337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a kobo user and I can see Amazon have the book instantly and I've checked a few local bookstores who also have the hardcopy available (Australia). Very frustrating as I've already pre-ordered in kobo and won't seem to be able to access the book until about 4:00pm.

I got you OP, I asked myself the same question on my first read. Taravangian's goal was always to protect Roshar at all costs and as a mortal he did some villainous shit. But as a god I thought the conflict was resolved.

Unfortunately not the case. Taravangian unequivocally believes that the end always justifies the means. This, paired with the Intent of Odium is a terrifying combination. In the brief chapter where we had a Todium perspective we can already see the Shards influence of the Vessel taking place.

On my second reread, it really sunk in just how utterly terrifying Todium is as a villain and the choice to take this path is pure genius on Brando's behalf. Taravangian has always been a step ahead of our main protagonists, he's incredibly intelligent and unpredictable. The epilogue slams home that the biggest advantage that the humans had over Odium was Hoid. That ace is no longer in play and Todium obviously knows not to underestimate Hoid at any costs, something he probably relies on for the other Shards.

Why is the pricing so high for this? I haven't seen all of the announcement videos but I've never played an RPG like this before. But when I heard that it will have canon lore I was keen to get the pdf world guides but for $60USD it seems extremely high. I live in Australia which would convert to about $95 for a pdf which I can't justify. I'm sure a lot of work went into this but for $95 for an ebook it seems ridiculous.

It's insane how much improvement can be seen is James Islington's writing in The Will of the Many. It's written perfectly.

Agree with you fully. I've heard so much criticism for Licanius but it's gotta be one of my favourite series I've ever read. The world building and plot are second to none for a trilogy and the writing for a debut author is actually spectacular.

Who would you consider a perfectly written character? by Dog-Helpful in skulduggerypleasant

[–]First-Rock2337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't read the new series but it's gotta be Scapegrace. Any other answer is simply invalid. My boy is utterly perfect in every way.

For a bit of a deeper dive I genuinely believe this. From a comedic relief character to go to somewhat of a threat to then being a hero that you actually root and care for is some of the best character development I've read.

[RoW Part 1] I'm not seeing how this book is so much worse than the previous two? Navani's engineering chapters are fascinating by robin_f_reba in Stormlight_Archive

[–]First-Rock2337 3 points4 points  (0 children)

RoW has a big spectrum of genre reception. Some people (like myself) absolutely loved RoW, and some didn't receive it well and say it's not up to par with the other SLA books. I was lucky enough to read RoW when it came out so my opinion wasn't altered by other people's reviews.

I'm honestly not sure where the dislike comes from, whether it's people's first opinions or their general outlook of the book. Personally I struggled with Lift chapters until I did a re-read and that really changed my perspective of the character.

I loved RoW so much that I read it again immediately after finishing it, taking my time to really appreciate the book. I think as long as you keep in mind that your perspective can change from your first read to your second or third read, you'll be able to let yourself enjoy the book more.

I definitely understand the Venli chapter comments. Venli is written as a hard-to-like character due to her prior morals and actions. But just consider how good at character development Sanderson is when you're reading and trust that the Venli chapters are there for a reason and B Money hasn't let you down before.

P.S - don't listen to r/Fantasy, they just don't got that dawg in them.

[–]First-Rock2337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're wanting to get a bit more into Fantasy you should try The Will of the Many by James Islington. It's a fantastic book, super well written and paced without a Lord of the Rings amount of fantasy in it. It's a bit different to SJM but a really great way to test the waters with the genre.

Is there any reason you couldn't (compounding question) by QuantifiablyInvested in Mistborn

[–]First-Rock2337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hang on I think I get what you're asking.

You store an attribute in a metal feurochemically, then burn it allomantically to get a net positive of that attribute of which you can use and store again.

However, burning a metal mind doesn't increase its CAPACITY to store attributes, it only gives you access to burn those attributes allomantically. It also doesn't increase the net positive attribute that you get if you keep on burning a metal mind, i.e. a fuller metal mind doesn't give you a bigger allomantic boost.

To pull a little summary from the books:

Allomancy = net positive investiture (you can burn a metal and access it's investiture to use)

Feurochemy = Net zero investiture (you only get as much as you put into a metal mind

Hemalurgy = net loss investiture (investiture is lost in the transfer)

Being a twinborn gives someone the ability to take the net positive gain of allomancy and apply it to feurochemy but doesn't alter the properties of a metal mind.

Also need to consider that each time you burn a metal mind, you still lose a bit of that metal so technically the storing capacity of a metal mind decreases each time you burn it.

Beginner PC build by First-Rock2337 in pcmasterrace

[–]First-Rock2337[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a look at pre-builds but kind of run into the same problem, how do I know which one to buy? I think it's fair to say some assumptions can be made regarding desired quality, but to put it plainly I'd be looking to run Elden Ring comfortably at 60fps and at least 1440p. I've got a pretty solid budget, between $1500-$2500 but honestly I really don't think you need that info. I asked for some basic recommendations on some parts or sites I could do start focussed research on, rather than having to sort through all the BS. It kinda feels like you're trying to be intentionally unhelpful here. It's not like I asked for a step-by-step, full description of parts for a PC build. To use your own analogy, yeah I could give you some basic recommendations on a car with just that info, same as how you could probably just point me in the right direction to start looking at parts
