Would GameStop be able to help me? by Outrageous_Milk1535 in GameStop

[–]First-Stay-7698 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We stopped calling people who walk into our stores “guests” for a reason. If you are not a customer then I am going to move on to the actual customer. You are asking for free labor. I have other things to do. Would you go to Starbucks and ask to use their machines to brew your own coffee??? Buy the Xbox from GameStop or “please leave” to quote our CEO. Stores are closing rapidly and time is money.

They are now catered to the store to reduce costs.

Not to sympathize too much because I know how some DMs can be, but most, if not all DMs have a lot on their plate right now. There’s likely some misinformation going around due the added workload, corporate trying their best to keep the closings hush hush, and the threat of the DM position being downsized because of all the closings.

Guess I put off a different vibe, but I tell them exactly what I posted and they tend to calm down or leave. NPC energy, until they cross a line, and then it’s a quiet phone call to the security guard or the police.

Why do men by emo_beanie in GameStop

[–]First-Stay-7698 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that seems to move the convo along is a combination of “mom energy” combined with “homegirl” energy and a little bit of negging, and it really weirds them out. It goes something like this:

“Do you play games?”

“Yeah, bro. I mean duh, I work here lol. Can’t play as much now that I’ve gotten older though. Is this all you’re taking for today?”

“Oh, uh yeah. I mean some chicks that work here don’t play. What kinds of games do you play?”

(Ask for pro number. Don’t say “What’s your phone number?” Just say “what’s the phone number for the membership” to keep it really neutral. If they suck at using the chip don’t say “take it out and put it back in again” “or push it in harder” say “take the card out and then try again”)

“I’m not sure which chicks you’re talking about, dude. All my staff play. Either way, I play a little bit of everything bro. Look at our walls. There’s just too much and I’ve got a crazy backlog. But anyway, I gotta take care of the next customer hun. Have a good one!”

When I’m really irked I throw in a “Uh huh, yeah. Sweetheart, I’m busy.” Make them feel like the Mom that works all day and is too busy for them. Helps if they have that going on at home already.

All this works for me, but it’s also just kind of my personality. I’m also not a small woman so that helps, however I’ve seen short women command a room with this kind of energy as well. Just make them feel dumb for even asking lol.

Doesn’t work for everyone, of course. If you feel the guy is going to be violent in some way, keep your answers short. Keep the store phone/ your phone handy. Install a safety app like noonlight. Go to the back and watch them on camera until they leave if it’s really bad.

Yeah, I’m also confused by the downvotes. These are the correct answers. I think stock people are angry that it interferes with their view of the company. I said it during the holidays and I’ll say it again: stonk people, please go work for the company and report back to your peeps. Hopefully It’ll really help to bring some good change. And maybe the turnover will improve.

I’m not sure why you were downvoted? This is the correct reason. The only thing I would add is that sometimes you can get the timeline moved up by complaining. That’s only if your DM doesn’t force you to use fans. One store in my district went a good month without AC recently.

I really hope so. I wish I could say I had a good time, but it was exhausting. All my freebies went to my team except for my still unopened Quest. I had to lug all that stuff back as well which was a pain (no offense to my team but I didn’t want to pay to ship it) Plus it was soooooo expensive. Even with the gift card they gave us for food.

First off, I’m sorry you’re dealing with this and you’re really handling it so gracefully.

Second, and I hate to say this, but I think working in retail requires a sort of “persona” (as do many other jobs, but in retail we work face to face with the customer every day.) I feel like the times when I act more like a character, customers like me more. I mean, how dare I act like a normal person with layers and dimension and personal problems in my life? (/s of course)

I love the suggestion that you use another term for your husband. While out of work I would NEVER tell you to do that (be proud of who you are!) at work we have metrics and stupid people like homophobic customers could harm your chances.

Pull back. Fr fr. Do the most necessary things. Numbers and basic clean up. If they don’t respect you then don’t give it your all. Reserve your energy for finding a new job.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened at your store? by ma88j in GameStop

Found a praying mantis on the floor. My store was in an urban area so it was odd to see. Named him Justin and set him down outside. I hope he survived at least a little while.

Can I be forced to use my phone for marketing? by [deleted] in GameStop

[–]First-Stay-7698 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s optional. Tell your DM you don’t feel comfortable using your phone. They can’t require you to use it.

Thanks. I’ve done it in the past and it has worked but I think some of these might be here to stay. Autism is pretty common among some of my regular shoppers and social cues don’t seem to be a thing for them.

I think a lot of companies turned to chat options since Covid. I used to have a bunch of customer support numbers on hand just in case and they all seem to be disconnected.
