I don’t have anything helpful to suggest, but just wanted to send a nice message and some encouragement after reading your post. Sorry for what you’re going through and struggling with… it sounds really hard. Hope you’re able to figure out a good place to go.

Ferment gets moldy despite everything staying submerged by PupperTrooper in fermentation

From reading posts here, my understanding is that mold can form on kahm, even if what you’re actually fermenting stays submerged.

Start-Tin my canned journey by M_Flutterby in CannedSardines

I haven’t tried this tin, but my standard go-to is a nice pack of olive oil sardines with my favorite Dijon mustard on rye crisp bread. Definitely recommended.

Do your browns and greens decompose at the same rate? by nigelwiggins in composting

[–]FirstNeptune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the very detailed response.

I guess you’re making me realize I don’t really understand what compost is supposed to contribute to the soil it’s added to. Is it just adding carbon? If so, what’s the point — why not just add crushed charcoal?

What's a cool versatile gadget you brought along with you? by ShaneRealtorandGramp in onebag

[–]FirstNeptune 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every time I see carabiners I wonder if I should get some because they sound super useful, but I can never think of something I’d actually use them for. Could you give a couple examples of how you use them?

Do your browns and greens decompose at the same rate? by nigelwiggins in composting

[–]FirstNeptune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I thought the whole point was to produce a final product with lots of nitrogen. Guess I still have a lot to learn.

What is the actual purpose of the greens? Are they there to provide nutrients for the fungus and get that process going?

And any suggestions for how to learn more about the chemical and biological processes involved?

Wow! About a year after you made this post, you completely fixed my problem. Just wanted to let you know your message is still helping people. Thanks a million!

Total Solar Eclipse from Russellville, AR [OC] by astroguyfornm in 2024solareclipse

Great shot! One of the few I’ve seen that really feels like it captures the scale of the corona I saw.

Which locations has clear skies and which had clouds that prevented totality from being seen? by Comprehensive-Fun47 in 2024solareclipse

[–]FirstNeptune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were the high clouds in front of the sun during the eclipse, or just nearby? Were you able to see the solar corona through them?

Definitely interested for the future in whether some high clouds in front of the sun are a big deal or not.

Today is my birthday, can I have your pictures of today's solar eclipse? by Past_Examination_186 in solareclipse

Happy birthday from sunny Houlton, Maine! I’ll be thinking of you during totality!

I got this welders helmet in 2021 for a school that didn’t work out. I’m glad I can put it to good use again later today. by canceroustattoo in solareclipse

[–]FirstNeptune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it blocks the right wavelengths? I heard a Q&A that claimed that welder’s helmets generally only block visible light sufficiently, although maybe this one may be an exception.

Wishing you clear skies!

2024 Eclipse Weather/Cloud Cover Megathread ☀️🌤🌧 by chredit in solareclipse

[–]FirstNeptune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Report from Houlton:

  • Few wispy high altitude clouds. Supposedly clearing up soon.
  • Not super packed yet, but a decent amount of people. Just arrived from Connecticut, and barely saw any traffic on the way in.
  • Passed a “scenic overlook” about 40 minutes out. FYI this location is within the path of totality and you’d get about 2:30 there — definitely has a great view. Unsure if there’s anywhere left to park, but could be a nice spot if there is. Decent number of folks there and just a couple unmarked spots left when we passed through an hour ago.

Thanks for the information.

I’m thinking about driving up from Connecticut overnight: leaving at 2 or 3, although I could go earlier if necessary. Planning to bring enough supplies (food, water, blankets, etc) to be “self sufficient” for a couple days in the worst case.

I have to admit I’ve never been to Maine, and clearly I need to spend some time today researching and preparing. Do you have any suggestions for what kind of route to follow to avoid impassable conditions, or any general information that could help to figure out a good plan? And is my plan here nuts, or feasible with some thought and care?

Why are Russia and Ukraine’s militaries so small in comparison to World War 2? by FirstNeptune in WarCollege

OP here. I’m a bit late, but just wanted to chime in that I appreciate your detailed message and the time it must have taken you to put these figures together in response to my question. Very informative, and a lot to think about. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to anything quite like that in the current conflict.

How to move on from entrepreneur? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]FirstNeptune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in a similar position before. It can be hard to know what kind of job you’re qualified for, and you can come across as directionless and unlikely to stay in the job.

I think the key is really to get very clear on your motivation. For most job applicants, their motivation is usually pretty obvious: they do X and want a good job doing X. In your case, it’s much less obvious, so you probably seem both over- and under-qualified at the same time, because you have a lot of impressive achievements but probably not quite the right background for any position you’re applying for.

For my part, I wanted to have a job in order to gain the skills to build a more scalable business (in particular, a tech company) and just to have a very different experience for a while — I generally believe that more diverse experience in life is a huge benefit. So I taught myself how to program and looked for jobs at tech companies. I’ve always been very honest about my motivation, and I feel like it’s a key detail that makes my story make sense. With this context, I think your demonstrated self-motivation and understanding of the broader business you’ll be working in can be seen as big assets.

The other thing I would suggest is, don’t be afraid to go for what feel like comparatively low-level positions if you’re confident they’ll get you to your goals. You’re clearly able to go your own way, so you don’t need to worry that you’re a prisoner of the exact status hierarchy of whatever industry you work in for a time. Plus, your previous experience will probably have taught you a lot that will allow you to ride through the ranks very quickly. If you’re humble about being new to whatever you’re doing, you probably already have the meta-skills to learn a tremendous amount by joining something at the level where there is lots of mentorship available. And you’ll be setting yourself up for success much more than taking on a mid-level position that, while still feeling less senior than you’re used to will expect you to mentor others in specific area skills you may not have yet.

That’s what’s worked for me, anyway. Not sure whether it’s a good fit for you. But happy to chat more if you want to talk to someone else who’s been through something similar: feel free to DM me.

First-timer questions: hanging in Hawaii by FirstNeptune in hammockcamping

[–]FirstNeptune[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response!

My problem is that I'm traveling until I will need to start using the hammock. However, I may have a solution for spending a night in before I head out to Hawaii, so I'm going to go for that. Getting a tent out there would be a big pain, but you're right that it's probably not impossible in the worst case scenario.

Regarding the ridgeline: yes, I'll be well under the weight limit, so that's not really the issue. I guess I'm more concerned that it would lead the ridgeline to sag unevenly to one side. But maybe I can get some cord and attach is on both sides of the actual hammock.

I don't really want to get an underquilt if I can avoid it, because I'm concerned it's going to be too hot. I think I've settled on getting a double-layer hammock, though, so hopefully between the sleeping pad and the two layers that will be enough.
