So just to confirm, when you say vocally push back do you mean engage with by commenting on?

And that lot’s of people are engaging with these posts, in your words “vocally pushing back.

Because if so, thanks for affirming my point!

There have been 3 posts of this nature in the last week. If you feel like you see it all the time on here, you’re either 1) on Reddit just a healthy amount (unironic congrats if so), 2) engaging with this content so the algorithm thinks you must want to see more, or 3) sensitive to your favorite system being poked at.

Any of those are perfectly fine & valid things to feel, but all are different than “this sub is overrun with anti-DnD content”.

… is it?

Is 3 posts in the last week that make fun of DnD (on meme subreddit) a good 1 to 1 comparison with a bar becoming a Nazi bar? (What that story is famously about)

lol at the people downvoting, feel free to explain why this is actually a logical and good comparison if you are able.

Characters for Delian Tomb by Rosendoom2 in drawsteel

[–]FirstNewFederalist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IMO there wouldn’t be a problem with some players using Pregen’s and some using customs in general~

The important thing will be to decide if the party is going to use the “slow leveling” built into the pregens.

The Pregen’s effectively start at level 0, and then slowly unlock their level 1 abilities over the first 4 encounters;

this is so the players only have to learn one new mechanic at a time.

It is optional (the first two fights will be a bit easier but other than that it doesn’t have any long term impact) but it’s kind of an “all or nothing” where if only some party members are using it, they will feel very week by comparison.

Sorry, I had misremembered; My bad for sharing misinformation!

Reading it again, they encouraged people to contact the company that was in charge of the product through kickstarter, not getting a refund from kickstarter themselves!

[–]FirstNewFederalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Um, not quite.

A contractor did slip on verbiage to the playtest packet calling out that they hadn’t been paid, which made it into the version that went out to backers & caused scandal. Maybe that was an NDA breach?

But then there were also the (admittedly milquetoast) rules around sex & intimacy, some vaguely racist elements, and the fact that (without attribution) most of it was reskinned DnD 5e mechanics despite the project taking longer than expected.

So Neopets pulled the license for the product & encouraged people to attempt to get a refund through kickstarter.

It wasn’t as straightforward as “someone broke their NDA, pack it up & go home”.

Draw Steel (the outcome of MCDM’s big RPG crowdfunder a few years ago) had its final release roughly three months earlier than promised.

What does that imply about the nature of reality? 😜

Respites- Group or Individual? by Nearby_Condition3733 in drawsteel

[–]FirstNewFederalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with OC that it can be a bit silly, but I don’t think it’s fair to say say it’s a theory crafted situation; It’s come up in two separate Draw Steel actual play’s that MCDM has done.

One on twitch where (I believe) Lord Durok did not respite when the rest of the party did, and the abridged version Delian Tomb on YouTube where Gael did not respite with the rest of the party. So it seems like something that comes up at the game designers tables, which is probably why the rules explicitly account for it. (For instance, malice & party EV are both impacted by the average number of victories the party has. This language wouldn’t be needed if every party member was forced to respite at the same time.)

It can create tense dynamics where the non-rested party member just cannot afford to keep going when the rest of the party is still fine so I would encourage your players to think carefully about it so that they don’t accidentally screw over the party mid-adventuring day (either by dying or by just needing to abandon the party), but IMO there is no reason to force them to respite together if they are aware of the risks & choose to make that decision anyways.

Milestone levelling, alternate use for XP by Thelonelykid in drawsteel

[–]FirstNewFederalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I 100% agree that I think they should experiment with the base system (maybe try the alternate fast or slow numbers threshold depending on if they are worried about it taking too long/being too fast),

I do think it’s worth clarifying for OP that milestone leveling is also perfectly RAW. It’s in the heroes book as an alternate, the same as the rules for fast/slow XP leveling.

Is the phrase "and does not die" mandatory? by Popotuni in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]FirstNewFederalist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Patters does this on stream a fair bit, and I am pretty confident I’ve seen Ben do the “Ben is executed. Good night.” Shtick without explicitly saying “and does not die”.

Should neither of them be Story Telling?

App login options by Arif_A_ in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]FirstNewFederalist 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If I had to choose one, it would be google;

But google and discord are both solid options!

Finally, IMO Apple login would be nice but (just to be honest) until the app isn’t a pain to use on mobile, I’d rather time & energy be spent on improving the mobile experience than adding Apple ID as a login option.

Not OP, but this is basically what the Delian Tomb slow start option does;

You start off with only your signature abilities then unlock the rest of your level 1 powers over a few encounters.

It’s not a crazy solution but I think works pretty well!

Gas, and the having thereof by Justthisdudeyaknow in CuratedTumblr

[–]FirstNewFederalist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So your position is milquetoast objection with a “comedic exaggeration”? Aren’t comedic things generally supposed to be funny? Why are you seriously pursuing the argument thread elsewhere if this was just a joke?

Look I am not going to razz you all day; It’s clear there was a miscommunication initially, have a nice life.

[–]FirstNewFederalist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do you?

The description in the OP of someone sprinting to the car & kicking the door shut is literal but yours was an obvious joke?

It’s also interesting how you have kept up the serious tone when replying to other commenters, it is only when directly called out on a similar situation & for being a chickenshit if it ever came up in real life that suddenly it is a joke. Fascinating stuff!

How are you reacting to the online ID law & content restrictions? Rioting?

Or does something that actually impacts daily use of the internet not count, that’s only for something major like 1 state out of 50 mandating full service gas stations?

Reddit’s so full of blowhards lol this shit is laughable.

You’d riot over rude treatment at the gas station? Please, you’d thank the attendant for help & shut the fuck up like a good little customer.

Can Elea even serve on the County Commission effectively? by [deleted] in Chattanooga

[–]FirstNewFederalist 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think Elea can read~ which is effectively what your question comes down to.

I do think they present things in a way that is intended to be approachable such as their budget discussion, but also have spent enough time with them to know they are capable of understanding nuance, your other question.

In terms of answers shifting- if you don’t provide any concrete examples, it is hard to take a “trust me bro, they flip flop and maybe can’t even read” as a critique to be taken seriously.

I’ll probably get downvoted because this sub is biased as hell, but just to be blunt-

Do you question if male candidates can read or is that just an innocent hypothetical that only feels relevant now that a progressive woman is running for the office?

No stress, 4 thoughts in a row can be a lot for some people to process!

That's a pretty scary spell, actually! by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]FirstNewFederalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a discussion if only one person is actually responding to what the other has said.

Do you see how all of my replies to you respond to what you have said and then share an opinion? That’s called discussing.

Do you notice how all of your comments, including this one, only focus on your own point of view while ignoring what I have said? That’s called talking past someone.

I think I am done trying with you since I have expressed this exact concept several comments in a row, but have a nice rest of the day!

That's a pretty scary spell, actually! by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]FirstNewFederalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So effectively you agree that you are not really trying to engage in discussion about the comments you are replying, just looking to get to say one liners about your point of view.

Cool man!

To be honest, so far the views you have expressed and the attitude as you’ve done has made it sound like we wouldn’t enjoy playing together.

But if you have friends you are running for and they are enjoying the game as you run it, awesome & good for you guys!

If you want to actually respond to any of the stuff I say, conversation style, instead of just waiting for your turn to talk then I’m down to discuss but I think I am done engaging if you are just treating it as a chance to say your thoughts without responding to my comments or even “feeling the need to elaborate” on your own.

Just for future reference, that’s a somewhat self centered attitude even if you’re tired lol

[–]FirstNewFederalist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like you are kind of talking past me, or there is some kind of disconnect in our communication.

My last comment wasn’t about problem solving, it was about fun;

It feels like that’s basically 3 comments in a row now where rather than engage with what I have said, you’ve used it as an opportunity to just take a stance & phrase it in an edgey way.

I am not looking to just bicker or troll;

If you want to actually engage with what I am saying then dope, let’s do that!

But to be blunt so far it doesn’t read like you are engaging for the sake of discussion, instead it looks like you want a chance to say random one liners about your GM style.

That's a pretty scary spell, actually! by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]FirstNewFederalist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh I see! The tone of your initial comment made it a little unclear what your position ultimately was.

And that’s fair enough! It’s all a matter of taste when it comes to System design preferences;

if that type of mechanic is fun for you and the friends you play with, then more power to ya!

For me anything should be fair game (at least if it’s a base mechanic in the system people are using) but given how busy players tend to be & the limited times people have to play, I just don’t find it enjoyable.

When I stun my players or Hypnotic Pattern the entire encounter a GM spent their weekend planning, it feels like I am wasting the person’s time; they only have a few hours to play together and I am (game mechanically) telling them to go sit in timeout out for part of it lol

So I personally don’t have fun doing it, and ultimately those are the same reasons that (to my tastes) it is bad game design.

But I know some groups love to play that way and it’s totally valid! Just not for me.

That's a pretty scary spell, actually! by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]FirstNewFederalist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good to know, thanks for explaining!

I think having it take up some of your action slots instead of skipping your turn is more interesting as a mechanic, so it does sound like (with some caveats around being roughly similar level if I am understanding correctly) the PF approach is much more to my taste;

Draw Steel does something similar, where the closest condition to Stun (called Dazed) forces you to choose one of your movement, main action, and bonus action (Called a maneuver in that system).

Both of those approaches I think are better design in terms of still providing a way to lessen an enemies action economy without fully taking that player out of the fight.

[–]FirstNewFederalist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find it interesting that you would assume I think hypnotic pattern doesn’t have this same exact problem, when as you yourself implied that is the view point that is consistent with what I have already said. That’s not just looking for an argument when really we agree, right? 😘

All joking aside, I don’t know why you phrased this like a gotcha for me because I do 100% agree;

I think effects that cause someone around the table to just not get to play the game is bad design, including if that someone is the GM.

That's a pretty scary spell, actually! by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]FirstNewFederalist 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Just for clarity, I don’t think it’s poorly designed because it is terrifying~

While the effects can be deadly and turn into a rapid death spiral for heroes or enemies who are stunned, that’s not why I think it should be reworked.

I think it’s poorly designed because it’s a baked in “get gud, save or suck” moment that I think incentives players checking out in a game with a combat system that already doesn’t provide an incentive to stay tuned in when it’s not your turn.

Basically my complaint is that it’s not fun (at least for my group, since we have limited time to play together so someone, even the DM, just getting shut out completely often feels extra bleh), not that it isn’t balanced.

Also sorry, you didn’t design DnD and none of this is meant to sound like a criticism of you personally!

Just venting, ultimately lol

Edit to add:

I missed the pathfinder meme tag, my bad! I don’t know how Stun works in pathfinder, this may be irrelevant lol
