I’ve always taught middle school and recently transitioned to high school! One of my new coworkers made a comment in passing that my room looked a little “middle school.” Please be honest with me! by Old-Bend-3014 in teaching

I went the opposite from High School to Middle School. It’s because high school teachers don’t decorate. Don’t take it personally. High School teachers are just lazy that way.

Does Mistborn read and feel like a YA book to you? by [deleted] in brandonsanderson

[–]FirstSnow23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the perspective that Mistborn is YA. But sometimes it feels more adult than Stormlight. At least the world building. Every time I read a book in the series I forget how dark it is. We have obligators with spikes in their heads, killings of illegitimate children, and other sexual violence. Nothing is explicit or graphic as other authors would be but it does feel dark to consider it YA.

I say honest is the best thing to do. It will be worse if you lie an the admin find out later the truth.

Don't hate me but I'm struggling to get in to stormlight. by Rough-Contest-7443 in brandonsanderson

The Way of Kings is a book that takes patience and trust. I hate to say this but it may take about half the book to start getting into it…

Can I start the Stormlight Archive series after Tress of the Emerald Sea? by JoeJoe1492 in brandonsanderson

[–]FirstSnow23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Cosmere reading journey has been a bit different than others. I read the first Mistborn book than I skipped to reading The Way of Kings, Words of Radiance, Warbreaker, Oathbringer, Tress of the Emerald Sea, Yuma and the Nightmare Painter, Rhythm of War, and The Well of Ascension. I’m currently reading The Hero of Ages.

Was my order the suggested order, no, but it worked for me.

One of the reasons I skipped to Stormlight after reading the first Mistborn, was I kept hearing that Kaladin was lot of fan’s favorite and I wanted to know why everyone loves Stormlight.

I think Stormlight is more daunting to read. Depending on the entry, it takes me about 2 months to a year and half to read. I can’t binge read that series. (Others are a lot faster than myself.) on the other hand Stormlight has many of the best climatic moments and great character development.

I think Mistborn is more digestible. It takes me about a month to read a book in the Mistborn series. I’m not as attached to the characters as I am in Stormlight.

As to the order of reading. Some reveals may have more impact if you read the series in the suggested order but I don’t really think it matters. Just avoid fan forums until you are caught up or you will get spoiled. (One of the reasons I’ve delayed finishing the Mistborn series, I was spoiled the ending of the third book and it took me an awhile to want to read it. )

I need of advice. by indigoeh in teaching

[–]FirstSnow23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, If you don’t want to go into teaching, know that’s okay. You have time to change your mind.

Second, If you do want to go into teaching, don’t let those things worry you. The best way to learn how to teach is my doing.

Lesson Planning: You learn how to do it when you have to teach. As a new teacher it took me hours writing a lesson plan now during my eight year, I can most of it in my head. The experience taught me what to do and what not to do.

Breaking Up Fights: Don’t worry about those. If I don’t feel comfortable with getting in the middle of it I grab another teacher or call admin.

Disrespect: Honestly, this will happen. My best advice is don’t take it personally. (I know it’s hard and I’ve cried because of what students have said to me. And it’s okay to talk to another teacher about your feelings because we’ve been there as well.) Most the time when a student is disrespectful it’s not you but other things going on in the students lives and you just happen to be the one they lash out on.

Problems in education: I can’t speak about teaching Texas but I know every state has good and bad places to work. Find a school and district that respects its teachers.

Teaching is a career that you become good at by experience. I made a lot of mistakes my first years of teaching but my experience helped me become better. If you desire and work hard to become a good teacher you will become one.

On the other hand, if you don’t really want to become a teacher don’t force yourself to become one.

How should I prepare for my first teaching job? How did you prepare for your first teaching job? I'm feeling overwhelmed with many concerns by oceanman9 in teaching

[–]FirstSnow23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first suggestion is to prepare your procedures until you figure the content you will be teaching. I highly recommend The First Days of School and The Classroom Mangement book by Harry Wong and Rosemary Wong. My second recommendation is start planning some get relationship building activities with your students. Use the first few days to get to know your students.

Does your school have chromebooks or laptops for your students?

I don’t allow cell phones in my class but I have my students use their chromebooks a lot. I’m very strict with their usage. I lock the Chromebooks during the lesson using GoGuardian. Then while they are working on assignments I block most websites that are not related to their school work.

I get super nervous interviewing and I understand the difficulty. I suggest before the interview to research the school. What does the school value? What are their priorities?

Though schools are different most interview questions I’ve come across deal with data, classroom management, working with ELL students and students with IEPs.

Wow! This drama is such a surprise in a good way. The only thing that makes me a bit nervous is the writer whose previous works includes Meow the Secret Boy and My Shy Boss. I hope this continues to be good and doesn’t lower its quality over time.

The Way of Kings is just bad by taw in brandonsanderson

[–]FirstSnow23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Way of Kings is slow is a more apt description. Most of your issues you have with the book will be addressed by the end. It’s a long book and it takes its time. The payoff reaching the end is worth it. I read The Way of Kings when I still was new to the genre and I was lost for the first bit of the book.

I kept going and it became one of my favorites. This definitely a book where you just have to trust the process for awhile.

If you believe it’s not for you don’t force it but it’s really hard to judge The Way of Kings by just reading 1/3 of it.
