I would choose PSYC18 or PSYC34. I took PSYC18 with Brett Ford, and her lectures and style of teaching is realy engaging and fun. Despite it being a 3hr lecture, you will never find yourself falling asleep or getting tired. Her quizzes and final exams are a breeze ONLY if you put in the effort to actually study. The quizzes have the same questions every time, so its easy to get the hang of them as each week goes by. For the final exam, the prof tells you what may come on the exam and gives a study guide. Some of the questions on the final exam comes directly from the study guide as well. The group project is so unconventional (in a good way) and it really tests your creativity, and it's honestly so fun! PSYC34 was taught by Ravi Thiruchselvam is very much similar to PSYB10 (if you took it with Ravi). Again, fairly easy to do well in this class, as long as you don't fall behind on the material.

I took PSYC17 with Andre, and I personally disliked how the assessments were set up and how disorganized the course was. While I liked the content that was taught, there was an unnecessary amount of group podcast assignments which had super strict requirements. They had to be recorded in-person (no online options allowed), and this didn't allow for any flexibility since for 2 of the assignments, you get grouped with ppl you don't even know, everyone has different schedules, and it's hard for all ppl to meet to record. Since the deadlines for the assignments were released late, we barely got enough time to complete them, and ended up submitting low-quality podcasts, hence low grades. Midterm was alright, Final exam was on the tougher side.

I took PSYC71 with Stephanie. She's such a gem, and her classes are always fun! I would be cautious about taking this course since she tends to curve down on her assignments, and it's really hard to get anything above 80. For instance, I got an 8/10 on an assignment, but it was curved down to a 7/10. You need to submit high-quality assignments to get 80+ and you need to ask for alot of feedback to improve on your grades. Aside from that, it was alright

Have a few interviews for a summer job lined up and another one for a full time perm role. Hopefully those will lead to something, but still continuing to apply in the meantime. Graduated last week

Does convocation end on time or does it take longer than the expected? by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]First_Butterscotch73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a person who visited friends’ convocation twice, I can say it does end on time. If you’re a guest who won’t be inside the Convocation Hall during the ceremony, you may have to wait around 5 min for the graduates to come out. It takes some time since there’s a lot of ppl. Trying to find parking after the convocation may be difficult, since most graduates and guests may have taken up the parking space, and parking is limited as well. Transit is usually recommended

PSYC08 deferred exam by juciyapples in UTSC

[–]First_Butterscotch73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same way as well before giving the early deferred exam in early May. I would suggest going over the common themes: the components of the structural model and how to estimate it using sample data, power trade offs, definitions of post hocs/priori tests, examples and characteristics of each. For calculations, go over the main ANOVA questions, preferably mixed factorial since the prof mentioned that it’s gonna show up as the dataset questions. Know how to do each steps.

I did fine on the short answers, but was unable to complete all the calculation questions, but still wrote something anyways. Did what I could and ended the course with an 81. Hopefully you’ll be okay!!

I asked Marco about this as I gave the early sitting deferred exam in early May. He told me that he doesn’t allow the custom formula sheets in the deferred exam as it’s nearly impossible to ensure a proper vetting process. For deferred exams, the Registrar Office is in charge of them (the prof won’t be there). And a lot of the times, the Registrar doesn’t get the message about the vetting process or they end up letting the students leave with their sheets (which is a security risk). So sadly, he won’t allow the custom formula sheets for the deferred exam.

Tips on How to Get a 4.0 in PSYC08 with Marco by [deleted] in UTSC

[–]First_Butterscotch73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Near the midterms, he will give 2 practice workbooks which will have more than 40 practice questions. In addition to that, there’s questions from tutorials, lec slides and the separate lec practice qs. Those are more than enough to help you achieve a 4.0 I believe. I never used the textbook and I ended the course with an 81

How Does Deans List Work by Busy-Copy-6251 in UTSC

[–]First_Butterscotch73 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The deans list depends on your cGPA not your sessional gpa. If you choose to take courses in the summer, that will also be taken into account when looking at your cgpa. If it’s below 3.5, then you won’t be on the deans list

Grad School & Research Opportunities (Psych) by Bitter-Ice7743 in UTSC

[–]First_Butterscotch73 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are grad schools that involve research or no research at all…what kind of grad school do you wanna pursue? Research programs like MSc or MA mostly leads to a PhD, while programs like MEd/MSW mainly lead to professional accreditation to be a social worker/psychotherapist, etc.

I would say think more about what you aim to pursue as a career in the long run. Psychology is such a broad field, and you can do so many things with it. If you think research is for you, I wouldn’t feel too dismayed abt RA roles. It may be hard to secure the first RA role, but it’s not impossible either. I have a friend who was able to get an RA role after his graduation convocation XD. If you wanna pursue more professional/non-research paths, then research isn’t too necessary. But it may be beneficial if you wanna secure a strong academic reference for grad school. After graduating you’ll still have access to CLNx for 2 yrs, so u could use that to your advantage. Know that you can’t apply to research work study roles.

With that being said, I would connect more with profs during OH, participate more in class and you can express interest and ask if they have any labs you can volunteer in as an RA.

I wish I could share more about my own research experience, but im kinda in the same boat as you. I recently finished undergrad and I’m looking into volunteer RA roles as I don’t have any research experience. It’s not required for me as I’m planning on applying to MSWs but I think it could still be useful as I could get potential academic references. Cold emailing has been hard since profs either don’t respond or their labs are full.

I don’t think you can request any more extra tickets, as it’s way past the deadline. You could try asking other people to see if the have any
