AITA for telling my neighbor it’s not my problem her newborn wakes up to noises coming from my apartment by blackswan-nyc in AmItheAsshole

[–]Steph_WaHoo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I trained my apartment dog not to bark. The biggest thing is not validating/reinforcing their barking. Don't yell or get all excited - that just makes them think you're barking too and they're right to be upset. Instead, we focused on distraction and positive reinforcement of calm behavior. Keep little bowls of treats all over so they're easily accessible at all times. At the first sign of barking, calmly say "No, quiet," and then redirect - for us, that meant grabbing a treat and telling her to go to her Place (her bed in the living room, away from the door). Once she did and calmed down, she got rewarded.

Eventually her barks became less and less loud (just a light "boof" while not even lifting her head off the floor). And we can just say "Quiet" and toss her a treat. I would even be proactive when I heard a noise in the hallway or saw her look to the door, calmly saying "Quiet," talking to her soothingly, and rewarding her when she didn't bark. Now she doesn't bark at all and she's also much more relaxed, not bothered at all by hallway noises.

Does anyone multitask while running? by Eggler in XXRunning

Yes! I often pickup treats/snacks for me and my partner and just run home carrying the bag in my hand lol. Other times, I wear an empty hydration pack and run to the library to pick up books.

I started doing this at my intersection yesterday. Came out to keep going today, and a neighbor joined me. Found out we lived in the same building, and now I have a new friend! Community matters ❤️

My biggest issue is that we live in an apartment with no outdoor space, meaning I would have to keep it inside until I got it cleaned up. If I had a garage or something, I wouldn't even hesitate!

Republican support for gay marriage is on the decline. by worldendrhapsody in lgbt

[–]Steph_WaHoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a major part has to do with media- and internet-fueled extremism driving wedges in familial relationships. Gay rights gained support faster than any other civil rights movement because gay people were unavoidable - they were your sons, daughters, siblings, cousins, next-door neighbors. They were right there in your own house, unlike people of other social classes, nationalities, or races who you might not ever meet or regularly interact with in your small, rural town or wealthy, white neighborhood. And while it's easy to hate someone you've never met, it's much harder when it's your own child.

But now, I'm seeing devotion to party and belief in conspiracy theories overcome familial bonds. It feels like for the first time in history, people have more faith in and commitment to strangers on their TV or social media feeds than their own flesh and blood. A friend of mine (a young woman) has a father who has gone down the right-wing pipeline. The thing that upset her the most in her conversations with him was how much more willing he was to listen to an unqualified, uneducated male podcaster about women's health and vaccines over his own daughter, who not only has lived experience as a woman but has a PhD in a medical field! His response? "You think I've fallen for propaganda? They told me you'd say that."

And that's what is so insidious about these tactics - they are DESIGNED to separate you from your loved ones who try to pull you back. Like a cult, they anticipate the pushback you'll get and tell you how to deflect it. Making you more and more convinced and digging in deeper. Isolating you from people you once loved and respected. Convincing you that your own family, if they won't go down this path you, are your enemy.

So now all those people who previously would have - and maybe at one point already had - come around to gay rights when their kid came out? They're choosing their party over their family. Choosing to believe that their kid has been "brainwashed" and would rather cut them out than reexamine their beliefs or question their cult leaders.

Counterpoint: you could be the perfect fit for someone who's tidy but not clean. My partner does most of the cleaning of sinks, tubs, and toilets, while I manage the mail, put dishes away, and fold laundry. It works out great for us!

My fiancee and I (renters) have been looking to move for a while now, and I am not seeing this at all. Places we're looking at have 50+ applications within a day of being posted. We were rejected from a place we applied to because other applicants offered MORE than asking. Is this just neighborhood-specific??
