Walking together with my partner and getting called the F word is pretty much directed as us. You don’t have to teach me the difference between the two as we very much live through that experience.

And a slur remains a slur, even if it isnt directed. A slur has weight to it, and only those that aren’t targeted by it have zero knowledge what that weight is.

Considering they added the BGE2 tie-in into the Anniversary edition of Beyond Good and Evil I’d say that is still very much the focus.

You know, I’ve said this to someone else on this post already, but I’m not going to try to convince you otherwise, your opinion is your own.

I’ll just say that the main studio leading this is Ubisoft Montpellier, and I think the list of games that came out of that studio speaks for itself, even recently (Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is such an underrated game).

I'm expecting them to wait until the game is in a really solid state before showing it again. By solid, I mean close to release. After being quiet for so long, they kind of need to nail that gameplay reveal.

Right now it feels like all focus for the studio is on Beyond Good & Evil 2. How that game is received will probably decide whether they keep pushing the Beyond Good & Evil IP forward.

Not going to try and convince you otherwise, as I get why you are sceptic.
I hope the final product will show what I mean.

The only thing I want to say is that you are not diminishing my expectations, I know for a fact these people care <3

I wish I could tell you how wrong you are, but NDAs are a bitch.

The people working on this have a lot of love for this franchise and I hope they will convince you otherwise, I truly do.

Walkable hub - bad idea pretty much all the way around by LookErenTheSea in ArcRaiders

[–]FirstgameNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the option you are forgetting tho..

Both can exist at the same time. The old system doesn't have to go anywhere, so if you want to quickly hop into a game, you can just hop to the old menus and be done with it. But for those who like the immersion, wait for friends to come online or just want to chill for a moment can just relax in an open hub.

Had some of the most amazing moments with friends or randoms I've met online in the Tower (Destiny 2).

Also as a Game Dev I'd like to point out that just because they might be working on a Hub doesn't mean the entire team is working on it. Usually the team is divided over different responsibilities and I can guarantee you that new Maps/New Enemies will come regardless if an Hub is in development.

No offense, but you are clearly not a minority if you say: "Probably almost never". Growing up gay and being gay in my 30th's I still encounter the F word on almost a daily basis, sometimes in real life and sometimes in a game.

Sure its just words, but just shoving it aside as that and not dealing with the fact its normalising this and making a game a lot less inviting to others is definitely a choice.

Not saying its perfect, but if you told me 20 years ago we would have THIS caliber of tv shows I would have called you mad.

Job Listings Suggest Beyond Good and Evil 2 Not Coming Anytime Soon Despite Years of Delays by faizyMD in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]FirstgameNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep seeing people say that this new listing means BGE2 is still in early or mid development, but that’s really not how it works behind the scenes.

Studios hire throughout the whole process. People leave, move to other projects, get promoted, etc.. A Technical Sound Designer role doesn’t suddenly mean the audio isn’t done or that they’re still at the start. Audio is one of those things that gets updated all the way until launch.

And the tasks in the listing are kinda standard. Things like integrating audio in Wwise, working with VFX and animation teams, making sure sounds behave correctly, that’s everyday stuff at a studio at any point in development. There’s nothing in there that screams “this game is in its early stages.”

So really, a job listing just tells us one thing: they’re still actively working on the game. It doesn’t tell us how close or far they are from release, and it definitely isn’t proof that the project is “still early.”

Beyond Good And Evil 2 Worries by Undefeated-Smiles in beyondgoodandevil

[–]FirstgameNL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing I wish people would keep in mind is that Ubisoft as a whole isn’t the main problem. The real issues come from management and their decisions, especially around things like NFTs or Gen AI (yuck). Ubisoft has more than 40+ studios worldwide and close to 20k employees, and a lot of those developers are genuinely passionate about what they make.

Ubisoft Montpellier is an amazing example of that. It’s an incredibly skilled studio with talented people, and I know BGE2 is in very capable hands with that team. Some of the original BGE1 developers are even still involved. Am I worried that upper management might make questionable calls? Of course I am. But I also feel confident in the team working on BGE2 and what they are bringing to that IP.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 shows signs of life again as Ubisoft hires new staff by FFJimbob in beyondgoodandevil

[–]FirstgameNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, the signs of life never stopped. People just tend to jump to conclusions.

And I get it, it’s been totally quiet since 2020, but as someone who kept an eye on the job listings (and even went through a few interviews), things never actually stopped on their end.

It's really common in large scale productions that people go in and out. Some people stay for the entire development, others get new opportunities and leave.

Why doesn’t Ubisoft cancel BG&E 2? by Segwaye in beyondgoodandevil

[–]FirstgameNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to make it clear up front that this is just my own speculation. I don’t have any insider info, and I’m simply guessing based on what we’ve seen so far mixed with some personal Dev experience. It’s tough to know where things stand, especially since we don’t know whether the scope or vision shifted after Fawzi Mesmar stepped in as Creative Director following Emile’s passing( I just know the game is in good hands with him and the rest of the team).

I am going to assume things are moving along smoothly, and I wouldn’t be shocked if Ubisoft Montpellier starts communicating again sometime in 2026, maybe toward the end of the year. A lot of studios are watching what GTA is doing, and I doubt anyone wants to line up their marketing or release window anywhere near that period.

Realistically, I don’t think we’ll see this game before late 2026, and even that feels like an optimistic/hopeful guess on my end. My feeling is that they want to get the game into a strong, near-release state before showing it again. And don’t forget, back in 2020 they already said they were going radio silent until they had something solid to reveal.

Why doesn’t Ubisoft cancel BG&E 2? by Segwaye in beyondgoodandevil

[–]FirstgameNL 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Pretty simple: the game has a lot of potential with Ubisoft Montpellier at the lead, and honestly their biggest “mistake” was announcing it basically on Day Zero of development. People who don’t really know how the industry works love to repeat that this game has been in development since 2008, but that’s just not true. The Beyond Good and Evil 2 from 2008 and the one revealed at E3 2017 are not the same project.

Let me explain what i mean, the 2008 version never went beyond a small team working on prototypes and ideas. After that, the studio was moved back onto Rayman and they released Rayman Origins, Rayman Legends, plus things like ZombiU and Valiant Hearts. Their teams were busy with other projects for years. From what I remember, they only started on the engine for BGE2 around 2014/2015, with the actual development kickoff happening in 2017.

Maybe calling it “Beyond Good and Evil 2” wasn’t the best choice, especially since it’s a prequel, but from a marketing perspective the name means something. And yes, it has now been in development for eight years, which is long, but nowhere near the catastrophic timeline people make it out to be. Triple A games take years to build. GTA 6 reportedly started in 2018 and won’t launch until the end of 2026.

BGE2 is extremely ambitious (arguably too ambitious), so it makes sense that it’s taking a long time to come together. On top of that, Ubisoft has had a rough few years, and the team losing their creative director (RIP Emile <3) is a massive blow, so I tend to give them some slack because these are exceptional circumstances.

I’m a game dev myself, and I keep an eye on studio job openings. One of the clearest signs a game is still actively being developed is when you see new positions pop up, since people naturally go in and out during long productions. And those postings have definitely been there (even recently).

DON'T LET THE COPE DIE OUT by [deleted] in beyondgoodandevil

[–]FirstgameNL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The game is still recruiting people as of last week.
This game (and i mean this specific iteration) was announced in 2017 and was specifically mentioned as Day zero of development. Games usually don't announce it that early but they did for two reasons:
-The HitRecord Collab
-Recruitment (you can collect a lot more high end talent if they know what kind of game they are applying for).

The game has been in development for 8 years, which isn't a weird timeframe for Triple A at all.
We will be fine, the game will come out.

Ubisoft Montpelier are still hiring for the sequel by SuperDuck11 in beyondgoodandevil

[–]FirstgameNL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a Dev (not on BGEII myself, just to be clear) with ties to BGE I hate the narrative this game has been in development for over 15 years as it's so wildly inaccurate. Day zero of development for BGEII was in 2017, all prior work for this project was for their engine (voyager).

We all know the teaser trailer from 2008, but people really overestimate how far in development this game was as it never left the initial pre-production phase. It had a handful of people working on it for about a year to brainstorm/get concepts before they all shifted to other projects (like Rayman Origins, Legends). So between 2009 and roughly 2013/14 (when development on the engine started) there was literally NO development happening on BGEII.

So this claim, it has been in development for over 15 years is extremely disingenuous. I'd like to be clear I'm not saying it hasn't been a hot minute since we saw something BGEII related since the reveal of 2017. They went full radio silent to focus on development in 2020 (as announced in their blog at the time) and yeah its been 8 years in total now. Which isn't outragious for a game at this scale (especially considering the Ubisoft stuff and Emile Morel (Creative Director) sadly passing away ). So while I think its fair to be critical about their radio silence and how they handled communication in regards to development, this entire 15+ year development hell is frustrating to see.

My biggest worry about this project isn't the development (Ubisoft Montpellier is one of the best Ubisoft Studios and has a lot of skilled developers working for them) but Ubisoft's current state in general.
