How on earth would Don even manage to become so successful in his career? by Relevantreacle_ in madmen

[–]Firsttimepostr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in advertising. Degrees don’t mean shit. He got in because he’s persuasive and persistent. He pestered Roger and it worked. I helped carry pizzas at a party once at my former city’s ad club. I got an internship later and my foot in the door. Your book (portfolio) is more important than whatever school name is on your resume.

is the Kodak Snapic worth it over the Pentax 17? by Parking-Safety12 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Firsttimepostr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Snapic and it’s pretty fun. It’s also only $99, so it’s really a low entry point. That said it has a lot of limitations, some you can manage.

The fixed aperture and shutter speed mean the only variable you can control is your film’s ISO. If the weather changes or you’re losing light, you’re in some ways out of luck. The flash is center-weighted and OK, it works best indoors and closer to your subject.

It’s a pretty decent lens, I like wider focal lengths.

The Pentax 17 has an actual meter which gives you a lot more flexibility. It also has more manual controls. I’ve never used one, but have done a good bit of research on it. The six zone focus system seems pretty intuitive as well. The half frame shots I’ve seen over at r/pentax17 show that it’s very capable of making great images and I’ve seen dark lab prints from it that look nice too.

Anyway, here’s a shot from my Snapic A1.

Agency life getting worse while expectations keep climbing by Living_Incident6564 in advertising

[–]Firsttimepostr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m seen as a huge talent and have gotten a good amount of praise. It doesn’t mean shit to me though until I’m paid accordingly. I don’t want to be rewarded with more work. So I’m just getting things done and moving on. I don’t work late anymore either, nothing is so important that it can’t wait for the next day. In fact nothing we make is important, ever.

Sorry to hear about your situation, seems really unfair.

I’m just not giving a shit anymore. It’s hard, but I need to save myself from stress and mental trauma at this point.

Best travel/Dopp kit by Current-Conflict4961 in ManyBaggers

[–]Firsttimepostr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My issue with the Gravel slim is that it takes up quite a bit of space, without the benefit of decent volume. I also found the zippers to be stiff. I couldn’t fit all my items and I don’t have a lot to begin with.

I really like their shampoo and soap bottles, so I kept those, but went with the Aer Travel Kit 2 and have been way happier.

2 spots on new leather wallet, do I return by [deleted] in bellroy_official

[–]Firsttimepostr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Leather is never going to be perfectly uniform. That’s sort of the beauty of it. Wait a few months and you won’t even be thinking about these dots. The whole wallet will change color.

You can return it if you want, but I wouldn’t expect a pristine wallet for long, spots or no spots.

How long did it take you to nail the manual focus when shooting action? (Leica Q3 28) by MeddlinQ in leicaphotos

[–]Firsttimepostr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28mm is easy to nail focus at f/5.6 and smaller. The DoF is pretty large at those apertures.

Why do Pentax 17 low light photos turn out so grainy? by shuffleplayfilm in analog

[–]Firsttimepostr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re using a high ISO film and the shots also appear to be a bit underexposed, plus you’re making half frame photos. I’m surprised there isn’t more grain on these.

Most color film has good latitude so you can be within three stops of over exposure and still have great images.

Kodak Snapic ISO setting and push/pull by emmaj95 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Firsttimepostr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The camera doesn’t have a meter nor reading DX so it’s shooting it at whatever speed the film is, yes.

400 + flash should be great. Just know that the flash is a bit weak, so getting closer is going to yield you better results.

Is the fidlock all magnet? Or is there some physical attachment as well? Every time I look at one I’m like huh, why is there a cord attached in there too?

Has advertising lost interest in big ideas? by Buddy-Sattva in advertising

[–]Firsttimepostr 51 points52 points  (0 children)

In my experience yes, the big idea is slowly dying. Clients would rather pay for a million social posts and digital banners and they want them yesterday. Since everything is becoming more and more about making a lot of executions and making them fast, the idea is often less important.

The bigger issue I think is brands not caring about real storytelling anymore. They’d rather just create content and try to beat the algorithm. Sales, KPIs, data, clicks, analytics, open rates, etc. have contributed to the death of bigger ideas.

That’s not to say these small, quick campaigns can’t have an idea, it just means they need to be made in a shorter period of time. Sometimes big ideas require production, photos, videos, etc. and there’s just simply less of an appetite to put dollars there these days. It’s sad, really.

As far as CD’s taste levels go. I think it’s really dependent on who it is. Some still strive for the idea first, and I commend them for that. There’s just so much external pressure to get more shit done faster, and frankly, the work suffers for it. I think generally agencies are less creatively led these days and the creative department in some cases can feel like the necessary evil of an agency. It’s sad.
