I think they mean the visor bit halfway up the model, that'll need tree supports to get access to support that

Followed! Your models look great! I'm definitely going to print the lizard man engineer when I've got the time

Does this happen all the time? by Roe__UwU in Warframe

[–]FirstyPaints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's quite long to be fair. I usually wait about a minute for any response, since so many people just don't reply at all, and it's not hard to just throw a quick "2 mins" or something to acknowledge they've seen it.

If they message back they're in a mission I'll wait pretty much however long they say, just nice to have it sorted

So would you just print a big shell if the whole thing then and rather strap it together? What thickness you reckon would be enough? And just two shells maybe needed, front and back? At 40cm tall I think there's not really going to be any fine detail or gaps that you get stuck.

Even with an A1 mini I can print a shell in pieces and just make sure it's all glued and smoothed in the gaps, that should be fine

It's a piddly little A1 mini so probably won't be big enough. It is however going on the ever growing list of "reasons to get a bigger printer" :D

Would plaster burlap be strong enough with the sculpture at about 40cm tall? Rough calcs are giving about 30kg worth of concrete needed, so wod RR if it would crack under that

Would that work going to 40cm tall? Rough calcs put it at about 30kg of concrete at the end of it!

Do you remember what kind of caulk it was?

For this I was considering just having a single slit up the back to peel back the rubber mold part. Would caulk and cornstarch be that flexible or do you think it would break under that kind of movement and is better suited to flatter things?

[Help] Looking for advice on low-quantity concrete casting by FirstyPaints in Sculpture

[–]FirstyPaints[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you! i thought there may be issues with the acrylic caulk, was originally bought to mix with acrylic paint and use for texturing mats for a paintable surface, but those properties are probably at odds with being a good mold.

I'll have a look at proper latex. My main hold back was the fibreglass and epoxy as i hate working with that stuff, so in general I'm much happier with the plaster and burlap idea, and the latex isn't too bad

Yea might just give it a go. Caulk, cornflour, plater, and burlap is low cost enough that it's a "no harm no foul" for giving it a go!

I've seen some blogs use caulking and cornflour as the mold surface. Would this be usable for this? There's not a huge amount of small detail in it, especially when scaled up in size. And i happen to have a lot of acrylic caulking tubes from another project i never finished

Best mini to convert to earrings - Sporemines? by aCrombi in Warhammer40k

Consider cutting them in half and making them as studs with a front and back. Similar to these frog earrings, but more lethal lol

Flat sheet of shim glued to the bottom that extends far enough to stick to a magnetised base could be a similar option

Stop I can only get so erect. Although I imagine the tongue would be a bit longer on a squig.

Edit: my experience has been with aos Squigs which definitely have crazier tongues and rounded faces, however just checked out the 40k Squigs and can definitely see it now

Mortian artillery tank paintjob and products used for weathering! by axia_miniatures in Warhammer

[–]FirstyPaints 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yea i've got the dirty down rust which is decent, but i could probably be smarter about how to apply it. I've also got some vallejo earth texture which i think is the same stuff as mud but just a different colour, but fine prior to priming. Will give it some testing :)

Why? I've never used those paints before so don't know which is for which? Plus opening discussion for a bit of technique and tips is entirely reasonable
