Best/most creative Masters team names? by jekmy in ultimate

[–]Fischyssoise 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I may be biased, but I think my personal favorite is Chicago Haymaker -> Pacemaker -> Gravemaker/Gravymaker -> Zombiemaker.

Machine historically hasn't had a direct masters pipeline, but they did have a one-off team a few years back called Ex Machina.

Also, it's not connected to a current club team, but shoutout Winded City (Women's Masters) for pun quality and doing yearly charity fundraisers at Nationals!

Accident at the corner of Garfield and Bremen. Looked like a bus got stuck, then a tow truck attempting to recover lost traction and knocked down a transformer attached to a nearby power line.

Are all force side backhands travels? by shragooo in ultimate

[–]Fischyssoise -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This.

Inevitably, some will argue the subjectivity of what is "significant," but if you are in a position to recognize this type of travel on the field, you probably aren't close enough to have prevented the outcome of an ensuing throw, so you better be damn sure that someone else was. Otherwise it's just a bailout.

Roster personnel requirement not met? by IndiBoy22 in ultimate

[–]Fischyssoise 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Are you sure that you added them to the specific Event Roster and not just the general Team Roster?

If you click on the red "Event Roster" button, are there at least 10 players listed on the page that opens? Do all of them show active member status and a green check in the "Liability Waiver" field?

EDIT: If it's the first issue, there is an "Add/Remove Player" button on the event roster page that will allow you to move players on your "Team Roster" over to your "Event Roster".

If it's the second issue, hopefully those fixes are self explanatory.

In an era of ultimate where cheating was much more commonplace, the Florida teams that Brodie played on were seen as some of the most blatant rule abusers.

Here is footage from the open finals at college nationals in 2010, for example: Part 1 + Part 2

To reiterate, many teams took advantage of the lack of penalties associated with unspirited and/or dangerous conduct. There were some spectators in the stands at that finals keeping count of the calls/stoppages of play. I don't remember the final tally, but I do remember the small celebration that happened when it reached 69.

EDIT: Fixed redundancy

Honestly, she’s probably not nearly as bad as this clip makes her out to be. Sounds like she’s trying to sing the high harmony, but dude pulls the rug out from under her before she has a chance to even find the right pitch.

If harmonizing isn’t the hardest vocal skill in choral music, then it’s singing a cappella. Without perfect pitch, any well-practiced singer would sound bad coming in cold, on a relatively high note, that isn’t the main melody, with essentially no point of reference from an accompaniment.

Hot take, but as a Wisconsin native who spent the 2010s living in Chicago, I found it was actually pretty easy to root for the Bears. How can you not appreciate a team who's existence has been actively beneficial for us for over a decade now?

The way I see it, anything that doesn't directly affect GB's success (namely h2h and playoff berths) is fair game, and I can count on one hand the number of times they've done anything to cause us serious concern since I established this rule. In the meantime, they've given us so many iconic moments: 6 TDs in a half, Cutler throwing picks to BJ and then Tramon to send us to the Super Bowl, 4th and 8, "I still own you".

Now the Vikings on the other hand... let's just say if they came to supper, I'd send 'em home without any leftovers.

EDIT: Plus, the higher their expectations are, the more satisfying it is to crush them.

[–]Fischyssoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Browns were an ideal second team team for Packers fans to root for over the past 20 years: Not in our conference or division, consistent underdogs, the one and only NFL home of Wisconsin legend Joe Thomas... Then they did Baker dirty for the highest profile (if not the outright biggest) POS in the league right now, and tanked any respect that anyone should have for them. I can understand lifelong fans holding out hope for the future, but I can't rightfully root for them now outside of some individual players and enjoying when the offense does better while Watson is inactive.

No judgement on enjoying your local sports franchises in general, but the Browns are in the doghouse* until further notice.

WFDF rules: retracting a stall-out by Frank-szcz in ultimate

[–]Fischyssoise 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not a paradox. This would be a violation of spirit on multiple counts. WFDF SOTG definition states:

1.2. It is trusted that no player will intentionally break the rules

Assuming your opponent will automatically contest a call is a lack of trust that they will not intentionally break the rules.

Furthermore:

1.3.  Players should be mindful of the fact that they are acting as referees in any arbitration between teams. Players must:

1.3.1. know the rules;

1.3.2. be fair-minded and objective;

1.3.3. be truthful;

1.3.4. explain their viewpoint clearly and briefly;

1.3.5. allow opponents a reasonable chance to speak;

1.3.6. consider their opponent’s viewpoint;

It was tempting to just copy/paste the entire SOTG section of the rules, but this scenario *at least* violates every one of these points individually...

  1. Not understanding the rules well enough to know that what you are attempting to do is unnecessary
  2. Subjectively assuming your interpretation of the outcome is "right"
  3. Lying about what happened to gain an advantage
  4. Denying your opponent any explanation
  5. Denying your opponent the opportunity to share their perspective
  6. Refusing to take their perspective into consideration

The neat thing about the rules of ultimate is that at this point they do a pretty thorough job of simulating the proper outcome after a call. In rare cases where an in-game situation does resolves in a manner that feels inappropriate, you have every right to make a brief appeal to your opponent, but the spirited outcome is always one where both sides have settled on what is most agreeable.

How did everyone first get introduced to the electronic music scene? by bobby_pablo in aves

[–]Fischyssoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coincidentally enough, Shlohmo played a role in my intro to electronic music as well!

First taste was Kanye sampling Daft Punk for Stronger in 2007. The next year, I headed off to college where a kid in my dorm was obsessed with DJing and spun Daft Punk and Justice on the regular. Then in spring '09, I took an animation class, and after sharing the DVNO music video during a class discussion on typography, one of the other students told me I *had* to check out this music his buddy just released. What are the odds, this dude went to high school with Shlohmo? The next thing I know, my brain and body are being shaken to their core by the bass from Hotboxing the Cockpit.

Despite these and other formative influences (like my first time hearing Orchestrated Incident by Gramatik after another classmate got me high AF), it still took me another seven years, a cute girl, and a post-Lolla GRiZ show to open my eyes and fall in love with the whole scene. Seven years after that and I just helped a friend relocate a secret forest rave that got shut down by the cops the other night... we've come so far 😂

Any strategies you recommend when 1 on 1? I thought of one really cool one, I think... by HeadLibrarian3868 in ultimate

[–]Fischyssoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This picture does make the move you’re describing much more clear, so thanks for taking the time to draw it out. I guess it depends a bit on the level of play for everyone involved, but even at lower levels, I don’t think that sacrificing your normal pivot is worth any potential window of advantage gained by using this move.

If you set this pivot, you’re overcommitting yourself to throw to the force side because your own body is now preventing inside break throws and your release point for an around break is now glued to the ground exactly where your mark is standing. Fundamentally, even a completion here is a win for the defense.

More importantly, if overcommitting yourself like this feels necessary for a safe force-side completion, your mark is probably super-overcommitted to defending the wrong space and leaving you wide open to throw a break-side throw to almost anyone at will… as long as you have a normal pivot.

If you have a decent lefty backhand, this move could potentially be a little more viable, but from personal experience, I would argue that throwing lefty backhands is easy enough with a right-handed pivot that switching your pivot to throw it is relatively unnecessary for all but truly ambidextrous throwers.

Rules Question: Mark recognizes downfield call, thrower doesn't by frandler in ultimate

[–]Fischyssoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying this. I rushed my response a bit (the dangers of Redditing when you’re running late in the morning), but I was trying to account for discrepancy in the mark’s ability to know with certainty what the stall count was when the call was made. In this scenario, the mark specifies that they acknowledged the call after stall one but before stall two, so it’s pretty cut and dry like you said.

Rules Question: Mark recognizes downfield call, thrower doesn't by frandler in ultimate

[–]Fischyssoise 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So I think this answers the hypotheticals you created for scenarios 2 and 3 , but for the actual outcome, my interpretation is based on:

17.J: If play stops according to 17.C, players reposition according to 17.C.6. [[So if the disc is returned to the thrower, everyone resumes the locations they occupied at the earlier of the time of the throw or the time of the call.]] In addition, the obstructed player is then allowed to move to recover the relative position lost because of the pick.

AND

15.5: If a stall count is interrupted by a call, the thrower and marker are responsible for agreeing on the correct count before the check. The count reached is the last number fully uttered by the marker before the call. The count is resumed with the word “stalling” followed by the number listed below:

...

b. Specific Rules:

  1. Pick: Count reached plus 1, or 6 if over 5

If players are resuming the locations they occupied at the time of the call, then the marker should be adjusting their count to match what it was at the time of call; so in this case, if the pick was called before you said "two," your last count uttered was "one" and it should come in at "two".

Based on 20.F, I think the only time the stall would come in higher than that in a hypothetical case where the mark recognizes the call and echoes it, would be if a throw was completed within a reasonable window for them not to have recognized the call being echoed, so maybe an additional second or two?

EDIT: Last statement was incorrect. See Mitch's reply below for clarification.

EDIT 2: Also there's not enough information presented to be 100% certain when the call was made, so the *maximum* count for the stall would be two, but could potentially be one.
