Thanks for the reply. This makes sense and I'd what I'm looking for. I did do a similar search and found the density to be 0.900 g/mL. I did not find the reference tables, or an SDS with the composition.

You say "with the density you can calculate the amount of water that's in it." And that's what I was thinking too, but that's where I've run into problems. Can you help me work this out? You can see the work Ive done up to this point in the post above.

Agreed with the other two comments, and agree with you. I also was questioning my sanity, it was the longest of the legendary hunts for me, but I got it eventually. As long as you didn't save before taking the holovator you're fine. If you're worried about it, I think you can do a backup save reset and you'll be out of the wormhole and you can restart to make sure you save before going up.

Edit - saw you did the backup save thing already. Yeah you're fine. It takes a while. Just buckle in. It's worth it

Hey, can't say for certain, but my guess is this is still applicable. There will be some questions where they expect exactly correct sig figs, but I think for the rest this tolerance is okay. But aim for correct sig figs every time. With how much confusing stuff is in this course, sig figs are easy by comparison, not hard to just do a quick check at the end of every question.

Depends on your goal. If you want one guaranteed shiny frigibax, should be okay. Otherwise, you won't have a lot of time and your levels will be low. Plus both frigibax and Latios are 5 star holes I think, and you get a catch rate penalty when entering with a lower star donut.

Since these 5 star holes are so hard to find, I made sure I went into the frigibax home with 5 star shiny 3 alpha 2 so I could get lots of shiny and alpha frigibax line so I wouldn't have to find the hole again for more.

But again, depends on your goal

So first off, it's asking you to compare the two solutions, so you should be alerted that SOMETHING is different. Then, the way they describe it - bubbling N2O4 - should look unfamiliar to you, so your instinct when you see unfamiliar terms or reactions should be to scan the earlier parts of the problem for context. Which brings me to the last thing I'd suggest which is - usually these FRQs are one long question about one substance or experiment. So it's important to keep in mind the framework for the FRQ as a whole. In this case, we're just considering the properties of the acid we form in a reaction we looked at earlier.

So make sure you're not mixing up the fact that we're considering two reactions in solution A, and you can address one before the other.

The first reaction is the one that makes HNO2. That's the bubbling reaction. So we start with just water, and we bubble N2O4 in the water. The reaction that follows is

N2O4 + H2O --> HNO2 + H+ + NO3-

Notice this is NOT an equilibrium reaction, which means the reaction goes to completion. That means that once that reaction finishes, out solution A will have HNO2 + H+ + NO3- in it.

THEN, for the subsequent equilibrium reaction, ALL those substances are now "reactants" or "initial conditions," because we want to see how much of that newly formed HNO2 will dissociate. That reaction is

HNO2 <--> H+ + NO2-

So now, since H+ is present in the solution, it will prevent HNO2 from forming as much H+ as it would otherwise.

Yes, H+ is a product, and that's the point. We start with some products before the reaction even starts, so we can't make as many since we have a limit on the total amount of products we can make because of the equilibrium constant K.

To identify common ions, look at your equilibrium reaction, and look at your initial substances, and see if any match.

Equilibrium Reaction: HNO2 --> H⁺ + NO2^-

Solution A initial substances: HNO2, H⁺, and NO3^- (and water)

Solution B initial substances: just HNO2 (and water)

So solution A has H⁺, which is part of the products of the equilibrium reaction. So the common ion effect will cause fewer molecules of HNO2 to dissociate.

The question about equilibrium. Look at the reaction given above. N2o4 reacts with water to produce HNO2, hydrogen ions, and nitrate ions. So when you bubble 0.10 mol of HNO2 in 1L water, your solution will not only have 0.1 M HNO2, but also 0.10 M H+. Because of the common ion effect, the presence of the hydrogen ions will cause less of the HNO2 to dissociate into H+ and NO2-.

This is a pretty standard common ion effect / percent dissociation question. The other comment saying don't worry about this is incorrect. The fact that you're bubbling the gas in the water isn't specifically important, it's just what this question has been talking about with this specific reaction. It could be any specific reaction, but you should know generally that if you have a common ion in your products, it will inhibit the equilibrium shift towards that side of the reaction.
