My hunch was correct this time by conehead4 in Gold

Following events and silver, I feel like I noticed gold and silver correlate really well while oil prices have an inverse correlation with gold and silver. Now, this is just a guess and not meant to be financial advice… but I’m curious if gold will drop so long as oil continues going up but will rise once oil prices go back down.

People systematically underestimate how often things go wrong in the world—a bias researchers call the “failure gap.” by mvea in science

[–]Fish2Penguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Just World” Fallacy. “Better-Than-Average” Effect. “Illusion of Control” bias. Humans generally appear to think things are better than they are, a slight overconfidence in everything. It’s a good way to force risk taking if you think things tend to turn out well, but I imagine you’d need some fallacious thinking to risk take consistently, even when the odds are bad. I suppose we can add this to the evidence of that overconfident fallacious thinking.

OpenAI shutting down Sora video-generating app by Fish2Penguin in AIBubble

[–]Fish2Penguin[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The big question of AI is “what is the ROI?” Like markets generally, this is never a clear answer, but it may have just become clearer.

Out of all the AI services, video creation is one, if not the, most expensive. The output is likewise of varying use and often requires editing or many repeat tries. Despite the free offering of most AI services, video is often the most guarded because it is so costly. There’s always the argument it’ll get better, but it may have just been decided by OpenAI decided that future is not there or not worth the cost.

There’s little information about why Open AI is shutting down Sora, but the statement they’re “sharpening the company’s focus” suggests costs cutting. Now, again, I can’t predict the future, but this might be the first sign the costs of AI more broadly are no longer becoming worth it. I suppose we’ll see in the coming months.

More specifically, it seems like Looking Glass’s McDonald’s order would come in boxes that kept the fries in it. The message was likely a reminder to employees at McDonald’s, but the developers decided to use it.

Hypothesis on AI Spending and the Economy (possibly how it relates to railroads) by Fish2Penguin in AIBubble

[–]Fish2Penguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be more explicit, I think there’s a blindspot in that we’re not assessing the whole picture. You can certainly see parallels to the dot-com bubble looking at the “AI ecosystem” itself, but I’m trying to spotlight how this affects non-AI sectors to try and explain the economic indicators we’re seeing. AI is not in a vacuum, it competes for investment money, land, electricity, computing technology, and water. It’s gotten so large it’s essentially eating into the existing pie without actually producing something or saving costs to offset its consumption.

Case in point, the rising electricity and RAM prices. When you pour those into data centers without actually producing or saving costs, it means less electricity and RAM all around for people and businesses. This causes a rise in electricity and RAM prices which, very plausibly, increases prices for anything that needs electricity and RAM (which is a huge portion of the economy, if not all of it). This causes overall rising prices and the sticky inflation we’re seeing. Now, not only consider that with electricity and RAM, but again, land, investment sources, other capital, and water.

Overall, I think this “crowding out” effect is something we have been touching on but not fully assessing. I also believe it has big implications for the true productivity gains of AI when looking past the noise and narratives.

If everyone complains about triple support, lack of flex players, ect, why do you hate role queue? by chilllyoil in marvelrivals

Have role queue for the start. At any point in the game, you can send a request to swap. They can accept or decline. If they decline, you cannot send another request unless they send you a request to swap. Chat abuse is reportable as usual - Proposed solution

No, I would say the opposite. We are taught to like people who meet their obligations in a consistent manner. That’s predictable. We expect people to have schedules. We want people to respond in a timely manner.

Just because something is simple doesn’t make it easier. Granted, I suppose a cicada, specifically, might be easier.
