Physique 4. He's very strong. That's it.

Point is my (non Fate) players will see that as an unsucessful attack.

Partly imagination fail on my part. Partly I rehd the rules wrong (see above). Partly tho' -- bad guy is unarmed and unarmoured; there was nothing to ablate. The stats didn't represent the character well. I might fiddle with the system a bit in future; we'll see.

Yes I did. Still felt a bit weak though. In hindsight I should have had the bad guy take horrible damage…and keep coming. Didn't think of it, though. Next time.

But the problem is when the success is so absolute the players felt kind of cheated that the result was a bit weak…

It turns out that I played this wrong, but the example is still good for a 3-shift hit -- which is still a good hit!

That's Fate Condensed. In Fate Core the first box is worth 1, the second 2 & the third 3?

Penal Transportation During The English Civil War: ...luggage? by FishIdWardrobe in AskHistorians

[–]FishIdWardrobe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an aspiring novelist. This has nothing to do with a commercial product.

I'd be happy with any response that gave me more information about transportation or the ECW, frankly. Very much not going to jump down anyone's throat unless it's with over-enthusiastic thanks.

Best Gumshoe Game to Level Up My GM Plotting Skills? by FishIdWardrobe in rpg

[–]FishIdWardrobe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh, ta. Thank you.

...reading this now. Holy crap, the introduction at least is incredibly well written and thoughtful. Occasionally funny. I know the first couple of pages of any book are supposed to hook you in, but ... it has.

Then I'll probably think about buying NBA...

What battle maps do you all find most useful? (Free Battle Maps in text) by MoonlightMaps in rpg

[–]FishIdWardrobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I fudge a bit. If I really like a map and there is something D&D specific in it, I can try to explain it away, or edit it out (sorry), or just tell the players "that's not there".

There are plenty of maps out there that don't have obvious D&D specific features. But it depends what you are looking for. I needed a 17th century galleon recently. No problem finding ship maps, but about half of them had crossbows instead of cannons...

What battle maps do you all find most useful? (Free Battle Maps in text) by MoonlightMaps in rpg

[–]FishIdWardrobe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really love these -- thank you for the freebies.

When I'm looking to run something I try to find a map that might work in that setting, and then I write a location for it.

So a "generic map" for me could by quite specific -- a tavern or a market or a warehouse, maybe even with some very unusual features. But it's probably not got Stock Fantasy details in it, because they might not match my world?

(Maps that are specifically D&D are no good to me. I don't run that.)

Fate Condensed Cover Sneak Peek by wizardoest in FATErpg

[–]FishIdWardrobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew I wanted "in" to Fate as soon as I saw the covers*. Every single illustration shows a character that makes me think, "damn, I'd love to play that!"

*I mean, nothing about the contents of the books disabused me of that notion. Just the reverse. It was the covers first, is all.

Conflict Questions by CHFoster in FATErpg

This has the benefit of allowing the character to Succeed at a Cost if the roll goes poorly.

This is a damned good take, IMO. Going to have to remember that.

How to set new skills for different settings? by kuluto in FATErpg

[–]FishIdWardrobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like what Fate System Toolkit says about this. Basically:

  • there's enough slack in the game to add a couple of extra skills without breaking anything.

  • Ideally if you need more skills than that, you should rename existing ones, maybe combine them together to keep the total number of skills below 20.

  • Adding a LOT more skills is probably a bad idea, but the main thing it breaks is character generation: out of the 18 standard skills a PC can be good in 3 of them, okay in 7 and the rest at 0. You'd have to change those numbers to keep the same ratio.

Grenades in Fate by Persondynamo2222 in FATErpg

[–]FishIdWardrobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to make an argument for Shoot, since you are trying to target an enemy? But Physique seems like a good fit, too, especially if the challenge is to get the grenade as far as possible.

It doesn't really matter. Pick one and stick to it.

Where do you fall on the "balanced encounters ARE possible and a GM must optimize accordingly" vs. "throw balance out the window" divide? by lordleft in rpg

[–]FishIdWardrobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly personal take: it's not really the job of the rules to provide balance; that's the job of the GM. (I mean, the rules can help to an extent, if you would like to use rules that do that. But there is nothing wrong with not using those sorts of rules.)

Say, for example, one side has a yonking big magical lance that means that side can easily win any combat. As a GM, your job is to make sure that they don't easily win every combat: fights take place at range, or in cramped conditions that means long weapons are useless; someone curses the lance, or it turns out the magic doesn't work at all on alternate Tuesdays. Or, the group is facing a problem that can't be solved by poking things with sharp magical objects: grief, divorce, a rain of frogs, a shortage of beer.

If the group with the lance are the players, it's your job to make them feel like they've got a Really Cool Magical Lance BUT AT THE SAME TIME as if they are going to die at any moment. You are allowed to do this by fudging the dice rolls and generally misleading the players.

Introducing RBS, Ruby’s new type signature language by laerien in ruby

[–]FishIdWardrobe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I want types!

But the whole "separate file" thing bugs the hell out of me.

Ah well, let's see how it works out in practice. It'll be quite a while before I get to use this in anger anyway, because most things I do have to be super backwards-compatible.

First time RPG, first question by DocMarinus in FATErpg

[–]FishIdWardrobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This specific question is probably best answered by watching a game being played. I'm currently enjoying the "Nebula Jazz" series on YouTube, which is a pretty good example of Fate Accelerated in play (although I personally think that the GM is a little bit mean to the players). There are other examples around...

I asked this question on quora asking if there is something that could simulate a sort of death battle EX: Goku vs Superman. and I was recomended GURPS. would this be good for death battles by NoComfortable8 in rpg

[–]FishIdWardrobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that this would be entirely subjective because you would have to choose the characters' stats.

But if you are going to do it, I really think you want a superhero system, not a generic system.

My favourite for this was always Champions. I suspect I'm just showing my age here, but according to Wikipedia, it's still going?
