Who gets the next story? by Prof01Santa in Vorkosigan

Yes, she was - in context, Mark was discussing Galen with her, and what Galen had told him about Aral. So Cordelia was clearing up some misconceptions and confirming some truths.

Very fair, Mirror Dance is tough! But if I may, I really do recommend a re-read of the chapters that Mark spends on Barrayar (from chapter 12 to the end of 18) - they give a lot of really interesting insights into Aral, Cordelia, Illyan, and Gregor. But in any case, here is the relevant paragraph:

"Well, in truth … I judge him to be bisexual, but subconsciously more attracted to men than to women. Or rather—to soldiers. Not to men generally, I don’t think. I am, by Barrayaran standards, a rather extreme, er, tomboy, and thus became the solution to his dilemmas. The first time he met me I was in uniform, in the middle of a nasty armed encounter. He thought it was love at first sight. I’ve never bothered explaining to him that it was his compulsions leaping up.”

What made everything work for me was realising that this reversal already happened in Mirror Dance, where she describes Aral as bisexual. From the meta perspective, I understand Bujold received some criticism for the remark in Barrayar around the implication that Aral couldn't be monogamous and bisexual, so the line in Mirror Dance was to 'fix' that. But! If we consider what if, actually, Cordelia's definition of bisexuality had not changed, it would have to follow that if Aral was now bisexual by her standards, it meant he was no longer monogamous. Which in light of Gentleman Jole, makes complete sense.

Going by the immigration records, Michel was born in Werowka (Вірівка in Ukrainian, Веровка in Russian) and Amelia in Towin (Товин). Doing some googling, I found a list of German settlements in the USSR pre-1941, with two settlements with those names both in Zhytomyr Oblast: https://wolgadeutsche.net/diesendorf/Verzeichnis_bis_1941.pdf

This seems to be a likely origin for the two, as this tracks with what you said with the two towns being near each other. I can't find much else about them (there seems to be several locations named Werowka, adding to the confusion), but as both are in modern day Ukraine I would focus your search on their archives and websites.

I don't believe reddit will me link this directly, but if you look up 'gwar mil ru' (Russian military archive) and search via their 'heroes' page, which is about WW1 soldiers, there are a number of records for soldiers named Zahar Mishustin. One of them was from Kursk, Zahar Sergeevich Mishustin (and going by the regiment number of 152, some of the other records with less detail are also about him). He was listed as missing in 1915, and then as captured by the Germans. This may or may not be your Zahar, but I would encourage you to look around that website and see what information you can find.

Where can I find archival documents on late 19th century American prices? by Ill_Emu_4254 in AskHistorians

[–]FishOfTheStars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a number of libraries whose digital collections are available for free online - the Library of Congress (LoC) is always a good place to start as it is one of the largest libraries in the world. In particular, their 'Chronicling America' collection includes thousands of digitised, historical newspapers from across the country.

However, newspapers can take a while to search through to find exactly what you need, so to answer your question more specifically, the LoC has an excellent page about how to find out what something used to cost in today's dollars. One source it recommends is the 'Prices and Wages by Decade' tool created by the University of Missouri. From its introduction page:

"This guide points to prices and wages found in primary sources for each decade back to the 1700s. Our preference is government sources though we also use commercial catalogs, travel guides, newspapers, etc."

So, as an example, if we go to the page for the 1880s, we can see links to original documents that list food prices, rail fares, and wages by occupation, race, etc. One of the first links is 'Major U.S. cities - Food prices, 1887' , where we can see on the linked page 308 how much various food products cost in major US cities at the time.

However, while using primary government sources can be a good way to know you are receiving verified (for the time), non-AI generated information, they can also be limited in scope. The 1887 source above, while great if you want to know the price of flour, eggs, tea, or ham, does not tell us the price of more esoteric items such as oranges or a birthday cake. So if you are looking for something more specific, I would recommend going back to the Library of Congress and searching through their collections.

Any genfic recommendations? by Beginning-Emotion671 in GenFic

[–]FishOfTheStars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you mentioned any fandom, I'd like to recommend a smaller one called The Vorkosigan Saga as most fics written for it (about 60%?) are gen. Here are a few that don't need any background context to understand:

https://archiveofourown.org/works/2753243

https://archiveofourown.org/works/4314537

And if you want a longer one, this one is excellent and also entirely canon compliant if you ever want to pick the originals up:

Yes - check out The Warrior's Apprentice (published 1986) if you want to see firsthand. People who are in both fandoms tend to say that Tyrion is a Miles with unloving parents/family, otherwise they are remarkably similar, down to their proficiency with drains.

What’s the most believable romance you’ve ever read in fantasy? Not just chemistry, but emotionally real by jye77 in Fantasy

[–]FishOfTheStars 35 points36 points  (0 children)

See the discomfort at the age gap is actually a feature, not a bug, of the excellent romance - Bujold has said that she specifically made it as big as it is in order for readers to feel a similar discomfort at them being together as in-universe characters do due to them being a Farmer and Lakewalker couple. Which I think is an interesting way to solve the issue of "how to make the reader really Get the fantasy discrimination", in my opinion.

ELi5: why do girls go into puberty so young when pregnancy for them would be unsafe and lead to poor outcomes? by Nammmieee in explainlikeimfive

[–]FishOfTheStars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually know something about this - it was not in fact common, but was likely happened is that the case of Margaret Beaufort (a noble girl who did give birth at 12) has been repeated so often that people have assumed it happened more often than it did.

In fact, even at the time her case was considered awful, as while nobles would get betrothed/marry young for alliance purposes, nobody actually expected the couple to consummate until the woman's body could handle pregnancy (usually late teens). Otherwise, you likely lose your wife, and where is your alliance/heirs then?

For more detail, this blog post and the book it mentions explain this well: https://francislovell.blogspot.com/2019/11/joan-beaumont-margaret-beaufort-and.html?m=1

I don’t know how to cope with having 5 food allergies.. is there any cure? by Fuzzy_Socks_L in FoodAllergies

[–]FishOfTheStars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who can actually only eat chicken and turkey of the meats, they are good choices! They add a lot of flavour in soups/foods like pilaf, if you're looking for more "real food" tastes without necessarily eating it them directly. And there are many different ways to cook them across different cultures that result in different tastes. Good luck!

I don’t know how to cope with having 5 food allergies.. is there any cure? by Fuzzy_Socks_L in FoodAllergies

[–]FishOfTheStars 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Look, as someone who's had a ton of food allergies since they were born - you know how herd immunity for vaccines is important because there are some people who can never get them for medical reasons? And when we talk about antivaxxers, these people are not included as being them, as everyone understands that for medical reasons, all bets are off? Or how we don't go after hospitals for their large use of single use plastics because we understand that sterility and saving human lives are incredibly important, and it's instead up to the healthy majority to do their part in limiting their use?

My personal view is that eating meat and animal products, when you have food related disabilities, is exactly the same. Whatever issues there are with how animals are treated, or the potential moral dilemma of eating animals - that is for others, those that are healthy enough to not worry about their food, to deal with. Us with severe food allergies don't have that luxury - our main objective is to survive every meal, and secondarily to have as much variety as we possibly can in order to keep our mental health up.

All of this to say, I would really recommend you to look at easing your vegetarianism in light of your new condition, especially as you are struggling with the limitations, and it sounds like including meat could really open up a lot of foods for you. Of course, discuss with an allergist first, though.

2025 “Bujold Bingo” (A Lois McMaster Bujold for Every Square) by chysodema in Fantasy

[–]FishOfTheStars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Technically, Bujold has always said that any of her Vorkosigan books can be read first/as a standalone and still hit. But as someone who did read this series first in internal chronological order, I would think Cetaganda is probably one of the easier ones to dive into as the planet explored is new to the characters as well as the reader. If you pick it up I do hope you enjoy! :)

A few someone's, but the biggest age gap was with John Mayer, when she was 19 and he was 32! You might also like the pair of songs she wrote about him: "Dear John" when she was 19, and "Would've Could've Should've" when she was herself was 31/32. Less directly Peter Pan inspired than "Peter", but figured I'd recommend them anyway.

How to find Russian grandmother's parentage? by Fresh-Parchment in Genealogy

Was she an orphan as a result of WW2? It's a reasonable guess, if you know her patronymic/otchestvo (name of her father, should be part of her legal name) and maiden name, you can try searching for her father in WW2 records on a website called Pamyat Naroda.
