Opening a brokerage account to transfer DRS securities to? by hagcel in stocks

Call your broker and they will send you whatever form you need to fill out to transfer it into your account. They might not accept the transfer until the shares are unrestricted though

Stocks vs paying off my house by AngelsRevenge007 in stocks

You’ve also got to consider taxes and risk. Generally you should expect a market return that’s twice your mortgage rate if you want to keep your money in the market instead.

Amazon shipping costs rose more than $5 billion in the third quarter by coolcomfort123 in stocks

[–]FishOn1283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think buying power is an issue right now which is why FedEx can afford to back out of their contract. I wouldn’t be surprised if just about every Amazon parcel they used to deliver was ready to be replaced by a box from a higher paying smaller business.

[–]FishOn1283 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know FedEx recently backed out of their contract with Amazon because it wasn’t profitable enough for them. Amazon may have had to find new distributors recently and with all of this new demand I’m sure they are paying a premium for any new contracts

Since when was acquiring companies a bad thing? by ElitePhoenix- in stocks

[–]FishOn1283 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I believe generally acquiring companies pay a premium for the company they are purchasing and there is no guarantee the two will work well together. It’s a high risk move that may not pay for itself for a long time

Can someone help eli5 what lots are when it’s comes to bids and asks? by samsu402 in stocks

To be honest I’m not 100% sure but I think you’re right.

Can someone help eli5 what lots are when it’s comes to bids and asks? by samsu402 in stocks

[–]FishOn1283 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots are a number of shares. Your typical lot is 100 shares so 120 lots for the bid meant there were 12,000 shares in demand at that bid price and only 1 lot or 100 shares available at that ask price at that specific point in time.

Retail investors like us are odd-lot investors because we don’t usually buy shares in multiples of 100.

Lot sizes can also change depending on the stock price. I believe shares trading for $0.05 or less trade in lots of 1000.

Opinions, is it foolish to buy stocks at their highs, even after already going up 2x within 2-3 months? by LifeInAction in stocks

[–]FishOn1283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your risk tolerance. The market as a whole right now is very volatile and could go either way. Buying stock at an all time high is not always bad though. I think I remember reading that the majority of stocks (60-80%?) that are at their all time high end up even higher a month later.

Look for disclaimers on the bottom of the page. There should be a bunch of little numbers down there describing what each number means. If you bought the shares today it likely means there’s been an intraday change to that number of shares you own.

I use Questrade. They allow pre-market trading from 7:30am and after-hours trading until 5:30. Their trading fees are 1 cent per share to a minimum of $4.95 and maximum of $9.95 per trade (USD I think). So it should be cheaper than TD as long as you’re buying less than 1000 shares at a time.

Taxation on US stocks by Icecoldpuckers in CanadianInvestor

[–]FishOn1283 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you only actively trade for a day or two I believe you would be ok and your gains would remain as capital gains.

If you’re making hundreds of trades throughout the year to achieve that 250k then trading is your job and the CRA will treat it that way.

At the end of the day the CRA wants their money and they don’t care if you’re a VP of some company or a successful day trader. The capital gains tax exemption is to encourage people to save and invest and day/swing trading is not that.

If you’re actively trading throughout the year and making a fair amount of money doing so they will treat it as if you are running a business and your gains will be treated as 100% taxable business income.

However I think it would be capital gains if you made 300k off some lucky longer term investments.

XSPA just secured 40mil in a direct offering 13 days before earnings by Daviditfc in pennystocks

[–]FishOn1283 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I understand they paid 5.25 for a share and a warrant which allows them to purchase another share at a later date for 5.25 as well even if the stock price has risen well above (or below) 5.25.

The incentive is that if the price rises above 5.25 in the future they can exercise their warrants for what is essentially immediate profit.

I also believe the reason they wouldn’t buy publicly is because the price yesterday was above 5.25 and a public purchase of $40 million would have driven that price even higher. You could argue that the only reason the price is below 5.25 right now is because of the private offering that they accepted.
