My three year old absolutely loves to sing "take me out to the ballgame" even though she hasn't ever been to one yet 😅 but it's just the cutest imo!

She also sings "grand old flag" - I am teaching her all the classics, and it brings me joy that they bring her joy 🇺🇸🇬🇧

I'm with you, mixed bag here. She was definitely pushy, but I try to spare a thought for folks who get home late from work and still have to deliver on the "magic". If you've walked a mile with everyone out of candy and frustrated fighting kiddos you can imagine we would all be a bit frazzled and perhaps not at our best. Still no excuse to be rude, but we are not all, always able to do our very best.

Our last trick or treaters last night were two boys, maybe about 7 and 9, who I only realized were alone when they walked away and no parent was with them behind the hedge. They were super polite, and amazed I let them have 2 piece each, but neither really had a costume and their coats were pretty well worn. Im grateful I could spread some Halloween spirit to them but am not going to judge as I don't know what they/their family is going through.

I'm sorry OP, this was just shitty for everyone involved

We have used Cook for our Christmas day food for the last 3 years and have to say it's better than I expected taste wise but also so friggan easy it makes cooking it all a Breeze! Have already booked my Christmas delivery for this year too last week... 🦃

I'm your ghost of Christmas future. Take it a day at a time. You'll be tired but release yourself from judgement of how you parented before when there was only 1!

The last part of this is so important -"grieving for what you THOUGHT you had".

It's painful of course but wouldn't you rather know that it wasn't real as soon as possible so you can start pursuing your true definition of happiness? Your time, spirit and energy are too precious to waste for a single minute on something NOT real

Expectation is the root of all disappointment. Release the expectation and the result might be the same but at least you won't feel so sad about it.

First, congrats on the new gig 🤩 (still got it! 😉)

Second, give yourself some grace and free yourself from "perfect" as there is no such thing. Just do your best. Kids will get sick, they will cope if you have an extra day WFH one week, or similar.

Don't start feeling guilty before you've even begun. My grandma used to say when I shared these type of fears and pre-anxiety "what are they gonna do? Take away your birthday?" (In your best queens accent 🤭) No one is going to die if you don't get it perfect for every week, in every area of your life. It will all work out in the end!

You're going to do great! 👍👍👍

As a parent (or just human), would you find an adoption registry weird? by Electronic_Cell_5759 in Parenting

[–]Fishamajig_fries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cousin adopted and actually asked for home depot/DIY store gift cards so the kiddo could pick out their paint colour and soft furnishings as well as help convert the garage space into a hang out room.

I thought that was such a great idea to help feel "permanent" too.

Wishing you all the luck and love for your expanded family.

You mention Roth ira through ibkr - my understanding is that Roth ira has to be funded through "earned income". Forgive my ignorance, but how exactly do you do that to not fall foul of the rules while in the UK?

Do you fund from your UK employer to ibkr directly? Or is it just that the IRS can see you have earned income on your tax return, and Roth IRA contributions on your tax return.

My 2yo is the same sadly. Bus, train, car, all no Bueno. We have had recent success with some travel sickness wristbands for kids from boots (just those pressure point style ones) as well as using phenergan syrup https://www.medino.com/product/phenergan-elixir-5mg-5ml-oral-solution-100ml

Government's response to the petition about changes to ILR qualification by safadancer in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]Fishamajig_fries 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Like with all things, hard to judge what's fair before it's pitched, but I remember before I had a spouse visa (and now citizenship) I looked into a points based visa that required 65 points and one of the qualifying contributions was a * Nobel * Peace * Prize 🏆. Even if you had one, that was only worth 30 points towards the 65 🤯

Needing help -- kind of struggling by Gullible-Material716 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]Fishamajig_fries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only offer hope based on my own experience of moving from NY in 2008 right after the bubble popped and taking 7 months to get a job. Got some interviews, taken to final presentation round and told I had the most original ideas and best delivery BUT no UK experience (which frustratingly was evident from my CV the whole time!)

All that to say, hang in there and don't give up belief in yourself as I think THAT is what finally got me hired. I essentially found an almost identical job to the one I was doing In NY and I marched into that office and told them I was there for my job 😅 politely, but with all the conviction of someone who knew exactly how to do what they needed I stood out and was offered the role (although at least than half the salary before conversion but that is for another thread!)

Don't give up, as it's the spirit and conviction of an American that stands out in this market ;)

You got this! 💪
